NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
Since the law has only a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of them, it can never make perfect those who come to worship by the same sacrifices that they offer continually each year.1 Umbram enim habens lex bonorum futurorum, non ip sam imaginem rerum, per singulos annos iisdem ipsis hostiis, quas offerunt indesinenter, numquam potest accedentes perfectos facere.
Otherwise, would not the sacrifices have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, once cleansed, would no longer have had any consciousness of sins?2 Alioquin nonne cessassent offerri, ideo quod nullam haberent ultra conscientiam peccatorum cultores semel mundati?
But in those sacrifices there is only a yearly remembrance of sins,3 Sed in ipsis commemoratio peccatorum per singulos annos fit.
for it is impossible that the blood of bulls and goats take away sins.4 Impossibile enim est sanguinem taurorum et hircorum auferre peccata.
For this reason, when he came into the world, he said: "Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me;5 Ideo ingrediens mundum dicit:
“ Hostiam et oblationem noluisti,
corpus autem aptasti mihi;
holocausts and sin offerings you took no delight in.6 holocautomata et sacrificia pro peccato
non tibi placuerunt.
Then I said, 'As is written of me in the scroll, Behold, I come to do your will, O God.'"7 Tunc dixi: Ecce venio,
in capitulo libri scriptum est de me,
ut faciam, Deus, voluntatem tuam ”.
First he says, "Sacrifices and offerings, holocausts and sin offerings, you neither desired nor delighted in." These are offered according to the law.8 Superius dicens: “ Hostias et oblationes et holocautomata et sacrificia pro peccato noluisti, nec placuerunt tibi ”, quae secundum legem offeruntur,
Then he says, "Behold, I come to do your will." He takes away the first to establish the second.9 tunc dixit: “ Ecce venio, ut faciam voluntatem tuam ”. Aufert primum, ut secundum statuat;
By this "will," we have been consecrated through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.10 in qua voluntate sanctificati sumus per oblationem corporis Christi Iesu in semel.
Every priest stands daily at his ministry, offering frequently those same sacrifices that can never take away sins.11 Et omnis quidem sacerdos stat cotidie ministrans et easdem saepe offerens hostias, quae numquam possunt auferre peccata.
But this one offered one sacrifice for sins, and took his seat forever at the right hand of God;12 Hic autem, una pro peccatis oblata hostia, in sempiternum consedit in dextera Dei,
now he waits until his enemies are made his footstool.13 de cetero exspectans, donec ponantur inimici eius scabellum pedum eius;
For by one offering he has made perfect forever those who are being consecrated.14 una enim oblatione consummavit in sempiternum eos, qui sanctificantur.
The holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying:15 Testificatur autem nobis et Spiritus Sanctus; postquam enim dixit:
"This is the covenant I will establish with them after those days, says the Lord: 'I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them upon their minds,'"16 “ Hoc est testamentum, quod testabor ad illos post dies illos, dicit Dominus, dando leges meas in cordibus eorum, et in mente eorum superscribam eas;
he also says: "Their sins and their evildoing I will remember no more."17 et peccatorum eorum et iniquitatum eorum iam non recordabor amplius ”.
Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer offering for sin.18 Ubi autem horum remissio, iam non oblatio pro peccato.
Therefore, brothers, since through the blood of Jesus we have confidence of entrance into the sanctuary19 Habentes itaque, fratres, fiduciam in introitum Sanctorum in sanguine Iesu,
by the new and living way he opened for us through the veil, that is, his flesh,20 quam initiavit nobis viam novam et viventem per velamen, id est carnem suam,
and since we have "a great priest over the house of God,"21 et sacerdotem magnum super domum Dei,
let us approach with a sincere heart and in absolute trust, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water.22 accedamus cum vero corde in plenitudine fidei, aspersi corda a conscientia mala et abluti corpus aqua munda;
Let us hold unwaveringly to our confession that gives us hope, for he who made the promise is trustworthy.23 teneamus spei confessionem indeclinabilem, fidelis enim est, qui repromisit;
We must consider how to rouse one another to love and good works.24 et consideremus invicem in provocationem caritatis et bonorum operum,
We should not stay away from our assembly, as is the custom of some, but encourage one another, and this all the more as you see the day drawing near.25 non deserentes congregationem nostram, sicut est consuetudinis quibusdam, sed exhortantes, et tanto magis quanto videtis appropinquantem diem.
If we sin deliberately after receiving knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains sacrifice for sins26 Voluntarie enim peccantibus nobis, post acceptam notitiam veritatis, iam non relinquitur pro peccatis hostia,
but a fearful prospect of judgment and a flaming fire that is going to consume the adversaries.27 terribilis autem quaedam exspectatio iudicii, et ignis aemulatio, quae consumptura est adversarios.
Anyone who rejects the law of Moses is put to death without pity on the testimony of two or three witnesses.28 Irritam quis faciens legem Moysis, sine ulla miseratione duobus vel tribus testibus moritur;
Do you not think that a much worse punishment is due the one who has contempt for the Son of God, considers unclean the covenant-blood by which he was consecrated, and insults the spirit of grace?29 quanto deteriora putatis merebitur supplicia, qui Filium Dei conculcaverit et sanguinem testamenti communem duxerit, in quo sanctificatus est, et Spiritui gratiae contumeliam fecerit?
We know the one who said: "Vengeance is mine; I will repay," and again: "The Lord will judge his people."30 Scimus enim eum, qui dixit: “ Mihi vindicta, ego retribuam ”; et iterum: “ Iudicabit Dominus populum suum ”.
It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.31 Horrendum est incidere in manus Dei viventis.
Remember the days past when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a great contest of suffering.32 Rememoramini autem pristinos dies, in quibus illuminati magnum certamen sustinuistis passionum,
At times you were publicly exposed to abuse and affliction; at other times you associated yourselves with those so treated.33 in altero quidem opprobriis et tribulationibus spectaculum facti, in altero autem socii taliter conversantium effecti;
You even joined in the sufferings of those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, knowing that you had a better and lasting possession.34 nam et vinctis compassi estis et rapinam bonorum vestrorum cum gaudio suscepistis, cognoscentes vos habere meliorem substantiam et manentem.
Therefore, do not throw away your confidence; it will have great recompense.35 Nolite itaque abicere confidentiam vestram, quae magnam habet remunerationem;
You need endurance to do the will of God and receive what he has promised.36 patientia enim vobis necessaria est, ut voluntatem Dei facientes reportetis promissionem.
"For, after just a brief moment, he who is to come shall come; he shall not delay.37 Adhuc enim modicum quantulum,
qui venturus est, veniet et non tardabit.
But my just one shall live by faith, and if he draws back I take no pleasure in him."38 Iustus autem meus ex fide vivet;
quod si subtraxerit se,
non sibi complacet in eo anima mea.
We are not among those who draw back and perish, but among those who have faith and will possess life.39 Nos autem non sumus subtractionis in perditionem, sed fidei in acquisitionem animae.
