NEW AMERICAN BIBLEVULGATA
Masters, treat your slaves justly and fairly, realizing that you too have a Master in heaven.1 Domini, quod justum est et æquum, servis præstate : scientes quod et vos Dominum habetis in cælo.
Persevere in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving;2 Orationi instate, vigilantes in ea in gratiarum actione :
at the same time, pray for us, too, that God may open a door to us for the word, to speak of the mystery of Christ, for which I am in prison,3 orantes simul et pro nobis, ut Deus aperiat nobis ostium sermonis ad loquendum mysterium Christi (propter quod etiam vinctus sum),
that I may make it clear, as I must speak.4 ut manifestem illud ita ut oportet me loqui.
Conduct yourselves wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity.5 In sapientia ambulate ad eos, qui foris sunt : tempus redimentes.
Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you know how you should respond to each one.6 Sermo vester semper in gratia sale sit conditus, ut sciatis quomodo oporteat vos unicuique respondere.
Tychicus, my beloved brother, trustworthy minister, and fellow slave in the Lord, will tell you all the news of me.7 Quæ circa me sunt, omnia vobis nota faciet Tychicus, carissimus frater, et fidelis minister, et conservus in Domino :
I am sending him to you for this very purpose, so that you may know about us and that he may encourage your hearts,8 quem misi ad vos ad hoc ipsum, ut cognoscat quæ circa vos sunt, et consoletur corda vestra,
together with Onesimus, a trustworthy and beloved brother, who is one of you. They will tell you about everything here.9 cum Onesimo carissimo, et fideli fratre, qui ex vobis est. Omnia, quæ hic aguntur, nota facient vobis.
Aristarchus, my fellow prisoner, sends you greetings, as does Mark the cousin of Barnabas (concerning whom you have received instructions; if he comes to you, receive him),10 Salutat vos Aristarchus concaptivus meus, et Marcus consobrinus Barnabæ, de quo accepistis mandata : si venerit ad vos, excipite illum :
and Jesus, who is called Justus, who are of the circumcision; these alone are my co-workers for the kingdom of God, and they have been a comfort to me.11 et Jesus, qui dicitur Justus : qui sunt ex circumcisione : hi soli sunt adjutores mei in regno Dei, qui mihi fuerunt solatio.
Epaphras sends you greetings; he is one of you, a slave of Christ (Jesus), always striving for you in his prayers so that you may be perfect and fully assured in all the will of God.12 Salutat vos Epaphras, qui ex vobis est, servus Christi Jesu, semper sollicitus pro vobis in orationibus, ut stetis perfecti, et pleni in omni voluntate Dei.
For I can testify that he works very hard for you and for those in Laodicea and those in Hierapolis.13 Testimonium enim illi perhibeo quod habet multum laborem pro vobis, et pro iis qui sunt Laodiciæ, et qui Hierapoli.
Luke the beloved physician sends greetings, as does Demas.14 Salutat vos Lucas, medicus carissimus, et Demas.
Give greetings to the brothers in Laodicea and to Nympha and to the church in her house.15 Salutate fratres, qui sunt Laodiciæ, et Nympham, et quæ in domo ejus est, ecclesiam.
And when this letter is read before you, have it read also in the church of the Laodiceans, and you yourselves read the one from Laodicea.16 Et cum lecta fuerit apud vos epistola hæc, facite ut et in Laodicensium ecclesia legatur : et eam, quæ Laodicensium est, vos legatis.
And tell Archippus, "See that you fulfill the ministry that you received in the Lord."17 Et dicite Archippo : Vide ministerium, quod accepisti in Domino, ut illud impleas.
The greeting is in my own hand, Paul's. Remember my chains. Grace be with you.18 Salutatio, mea manu Pauli. Memores estote vinculorum meorum. Gratia vobiscum. Amen.
