¹ "Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever does not enter a sheepfold through the gate but climbs over elsewhere is a thief and a robber.	¹ Amen, amen dico vobis : qui non intrat per ostium in ovile ovium, sed ascendit aliunde, ille fur est et latro.
² But whoever enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.	² Qui autem intrat per ostium, pastor est ovium.
³ The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice, as he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.	³ Huic ostiarius aperit, et oves vocem ejus audiunt, et proprias oves vocat nominatim, et educit eas.
⁴ When he has driven out all his own, he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they recognize his voice.	⁴ Et cum proprias oves emiserit, ante eas vadit : et oves illum sequuntur, quia sciunt vocem ejus.
⁵ But they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of strangers."	⁵ Alienum autem non sequuntur, sed fugiunt ab eo : quia non noverunt vocem alienorum.
⁶ Although Jesus used this figure of speech, they did not realize what he was trying to tell them.	⁶ Hoc proverbium dixit eis Jesus : illi autem non cognoverunt quid loqueretur eis.
⁷ So Jesus said again, "Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep.	⁷ Dixit ergo eis iterum Jesus : Amen, amen dico vobis, quia ego sum ostium ovium.
⁸ All who came [before me] are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.	⁸ Omnes quotquot venerunt, fures sunt, et latrones, et non audierunt eos oves.
⁹ I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.	⁹ Ego sum ostium. Per me si quis introierit, salvabitur : et ingredietur, et egredietur, et pascua inveniet.
¹⁰ A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.	¹⁰ Fur non venit nisi ut furetur, et mactet, et perdat. Ego veni ut vitam habeant, et abundantius habeant.
¹¹ I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.	¹¹ Ego sum pastor bonus. Bonus pastor animam suam dat pro ovibus suis.
¹² A hired man, who is not a shepherd and whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf catches and scatters them.	¹² Mercenarius autem, et qui non est pastor, cujus non sunt oves propriæ, videt lupum venientem, et dimittit oves, et fugit : et lupus rapit, et dispergit oves ;
¹³ This is because he works for pay and has no concern for the sheep.	¹³ mercenarius autem fugit, quia mercenarius est, et non pertinet ad eum de ovibus.
¹⁴ I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me,	¹⁴ Ego sum pastor bonus : et cognosco meas, et cognoscunt me meæ.
¹⁵ just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will lay down my life for the sheep.	¹⁵ Sicut novit me Pater, et ego agnosco Patrem : et animam meam pono pro ovibus meis.
¹⁶ I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd.	¹⁶ Et alias oves habeo, quæ non sunt ex hoc ovili : et illas oportet me adducere, et vocem meam audient, et fiet unum ovile et unus pastor.
¹⁷ This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again.	¹⁷ Propterea me diligit Pater : quia ego pono animam meam, ut iterum sumam eam.
¹⁸ No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have power to lay it down, and power to take it up again. This command I have received from my Father."	¹⁸ Nemo tollit eam a me : sed ego pono eam a meipso, et potestatem habeo ponendi eam, et potestatem habeo iterum sumendi eam. Hoc mandatum accepi a Patre meo.
¹⁹ Again there was a division among the Jews because of these words.	¹⁹ Dissensio iterum facta est inter Judæos propter sermones hos.
²⁰ Many of them said, "He is possessed and out of his mind; why listen to him?"	²⁰ Dicebant autem multi ex ipsis : Dæmonium habet, et insanit : quid eum auditis ?
²¹ Others said, "These are not the words of one possessed; surely a demon cannot open the eyes of the blind, can he?"	²¹ Alii dicebant : Hæc verba non sunt dæmonium habentis : numquid dæmonium potest cæcorum oculos aperire ?
²² The feast of the Dedication was then taking place in Jerusalem. It was winter.	²² Facta sunt autem Encænia in Jerosolymis, et hiems erat.
²³ And Jesus walked about in the temple area on the Portico of Solomon.	²³ Et ambulabat Jesus in templo, in porticu Salomonis.
²⁴ So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, "How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly."	²⁴ Circumdederunt ergo eum Judæi, et dicebant ei : Quousque animam nostram tollis ? si tu es Christus, dic nobis palam.
²⁵ Jesus answered them, "I told you and you do not believe. The works I do in my Father's name testify to me.	²⁵ Respondit eis Jesus : Loquor vobis, et non creditis : opera quæ ego facio in nomine Patris mei, hæc testimonium perhibent de me :
²⁶ But you do not believe, because you are not among my sheep.	²⁶ sed vos non creditis, quia non estis ex ovibus meis.
²⁷ My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.	²⁷ Oves meæ vocem meam audiunt, et ego cognosco eas, et sequuntur me :
²⁸ I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand.	²⁸ et ego vitam æternam do eis, et non peribunt in æternum, et non rapiet eas quisquam de manu mea.
²⁹ My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can take them out of the Father's hand.	²⁹ Pater meus quod dedit mihi, majus omnibus est : et nemo potest rapere de manu Patris mei.
³⁰ The Father and I are one."	³⁰ Ego et Pater unum sumus.
³¹ The Jews again picked up rocks to stone him.	³¹ Sustulerunt ergo lapides Judæi, ut lapidarent eum.
³² Jesus answered them, "I have shown you many good works from my Father. For which of these are you trying to stone me?"	³² Respondit eis Jesus : Multa bona opera ostendi vobis ex Patre meo : propter quod eorum opus me lapidatis ?
³³ The Jews answered him, "We are not stoning you for a good work but for blasphemy. You, a man, are making yourself God."	³³ Responderunt ei Judæi : De bono opere non lapidamus te, sed de blasphemia ; et quia tu homo cum sis, facis teipsum Deum.
³⁴ Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your law, 'I said, "You are gods"'?	³⁴ Respondit eis Jesus : Nonne scriptum est in lege vestra, Quia ego dixi : Dii estis ?
³⁵ If it calls them gods to whom the word of God came, and scripture cannot be set aside,	³⁵ Si illos dixit deos, ad quos sermo Dei factus est, et non potest solvi Scriptura :
³⁶ can you say that the one whom the Father has consecrated and sent into the world blasphemes because I said, 'I am the Son of God'?	³⁶ quem Pater sanctificavit, et misit in mundum vos dicitis : Quia blasphemas, quia dixi : Filius Dei sum ?
³⁷ If I do not perform my Father's works, do not believe me;	³⁷ Si non facio opera Patris mei, nolite credere mihi.
³⁸ but if I perform them, even if you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may realize (and understand) that the Father is in me and I am in the Father."	³⁸ Si autem facio : etsi mihi non vultis credere, operibus credite, ut cognoscatis, et credatis quia Pater in me est, et ego in Patre.
³⁹ (Then) they tried again to arrest him; but he escaped from their power.	³⁹ Quærebant ergo eum apprehendere : et exivit de manibus eorum.
⁴⁰ He went back across the Jordan to the place where John first baptized, and there he remained.	⁴⁰ Et abiit iterum trans Jordanem, in eum locum ubi erat Joannes baptizans primum, et mansit illic ;
⁴¹ Many came to him and said, "John performed no sign, but everything John said about this man was true."	⁴¹ et multi venerunt ad eum, et dicebant : Quia Joannes quidem signum fecit nullum.
⁴² And many there began to believe in him.	⁴² Omnia autem quæcumque dixit Joannes de hoc, vera erant. Et multi crediderunt in eum.
