NEW AMERICAN BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary, the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go and anoint him.1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary of Magdala, Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spiceswith which to go and anoint him.
Very early when the sun had risen, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb.2 And very early in the morning on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun hadrisen.
They were saying to one another, "Who will roll back the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?"3 They had been saying to one another, 'Who wil rol away the stone for us from the entrance to thetomb?'
When they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back; it was very large.4 But when they looked they saw that the stone -- which was very big -- had already been rol ed back.
On entering the tomb they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a white robe, and they were utterly amazed.5 On entering the tomb they saw a young man in a white robe seated on the right-hand side, and theywere struck with amazement.
He said to them, "Do not be amazed! You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Behold the place where they laid him.6 But he said to them, 'There is no need to be so amazed. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, whowas crucified: he has risen, he is not here. See, here is the place where they laid him.
But go and tell his disciples and Peter, 'He is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you.'"7 But you must go and tel his disciples and Peter, "He is going ahead of you to Galilee; that is where you wil see him, just as he told you." '
Then they went out and fled from the tomb, seized with trembling and bewilderment. They said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.8 And the women came out and ran away from the tomb because they were frightened out of their wits;and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.
( When he had risen, early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons.9 Having risen in the morning on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary of Magdala fromwhom he had cast out seven devils.
She went and told his companions who were mourning and weeping.10 She then went to those who had been his companions, and who were mourning and in tears, andtold them.
When they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe.11 But they did not believe her when they heard her say that he was alive and that she had seen him.
After this he appeared in another form to two of them walking along on their way to the country.12 After this, he showed himself under another form to two of them as they were on their way into thecountry.
They returned and told the others; but they did not believe them either.13 These went back and told the others, who did not believe them either.
(But) later, as the eleven were at table, he appeared to them and rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart because they had not believed those who saw him after he had been raised.14 Lastly, he showed himself to the Eleven themselves while they were at table. He reproached them fortheir incredulity and obstinacy, because they had refused to believe those who had seen him after he had risen.
He said to them, "Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.15 And he said to them, 'Go out to the whole world; proclaim the gospel to al creation.
Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned.16 Whoever believes and is baptised wil be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned.
These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages.17 These are the signs that will be associated with believers: in my name they wil cast out devils; theywil have the gift of tongues;
They will pick up serpents (with their hands), and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."18 they wil pick up snakes in their hands and be unharmed should they drink deadly poison; they wil laytheir hands on the sick, who wil recover.'
So then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God.19 And so the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven; there at the righthand of God he took his place,
But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.)20 while they, going out, preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word bythe signs that accompanied it.
