New American Bible La Biblia
"(But) take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father.1 Cuidad de no practicar vuestra justicia delante de los hombres para ser vistos por ellos; de lo contrario no tenéis recompensa de vuestro Padre celestial.
When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.2 Por tanto, cuando hagas limosna, no mandes tocar la trompeta ante ti, como hacen los hipócritas en las sinagogas y por las calles para ser honrados por la gente; en verdad os digo que ya han recibido su recompensa.
But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing,3 Tú, en cambio, cuando hagas limosna, que no sepa tu mano izquierda lo que hace tu derecha;
so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.4 así tu limosna quedará en secreto y tu Padre, que ve en lo secreto, te recompensará.
"When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.5 Cuando oréis, no seáis como los hipócritas, a quienes les gusta orar de pie en las sinagogas y en las esquinas de las plazas, para que los vean los hombres. En verdad os digo que ya han recibido su recompensa.
But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.6 Tú, en cambio, cuando ores, entra en tu cuarto, cierra la puerta y ora a tu Padre, que está en lo secreto, y tu Padre, que ve en lo secreto, te lo recompensará.
In praying, do not babble like the pagans, who think that they will be heard because of their many words.7 Cuando recéis, no uséis muchas palabras, como los gentiles, que se imaginan que por hablar mucho les harán caso.
Do not be like them. Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.8 No seáis como ellos, pues vuestro Padre sabe lo que os hace falta antes de que lo pidáis.
"This is how you are to pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,9 Vosotros orad así: “Padre nuestro que estás en el cielo, | santificado sea tu nombre,
your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.10 venga a nosotros tu reino, | hágase tu voluntad en la tierra como en el cielo,
Give us today our daily bread;11 danos hoy nuestro pan de cada día,
and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;12 perdona nuestras ofensas, | como también nosotros perdonamos a los que nos ofenden,
and do not subject us to the final test, but deliver us from the evil one.13 no nos dejes caer en la tentación, | y líbranos del mal”.
If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you.14 Porque si perdonáis a los hombres sus ofensas, también os perdonará vuestro Padre celestial,
But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.15 pero si no perdonáis a los hombres, tampoco vuestro Padre perdonará vuestras ofensas.
"When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fasting. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.16 Cuando ayunéis, no pongáis cara triste, como los hipócritas que desfiguran sus rostros para hacer ver a los hombres que ayunan. En verdad os digo que ya han recibido su paga.
But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,17 Tú, en cambio, cuando ayunes, perfúmate la cabeza y lávate la cara,
so that you may not appear to be fasting, except to your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.18 para que tu ayuno lo note, no los hombres, sino tu Padre, que está en lo escondido; y tu Padre, que ve en lo escondido, te recompensará.
"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal.19 No atesoréis para vosotros tesoros en la tierra, donde la polilla y la carcoma los roen y donde los ladrones abren boquetes y los roban.
But store up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal.20 Haceos tesoros en el cielo, donde no hay polilla ni carcoma que los roen, ni ladrones que abren boquetes y roban.
For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.21 Porque donde está tu tesoro, allí estará tu corazón.
"The lamp of the body is the eye. If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light;22 La lámpara del cuerpo es el ojo. Si tu ojo está sano, tu cuerpo entero tendrá luz;
but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be in darkness. And if the light in you is darkness, how great will the darkness be.23 pero si tu ojo está enfermo, tu cuerpo entero estará a oscuras.
"No one can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.24 Nadie puede servir a dos señores. Porque despreciará a uno y amará al otro; o, al contrario, se dedicará al primero y no hará caso del segundo. No podéis servir a Dios y al dinero.
"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat (or drink), or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?25 Por eso os digo: no estéis agobiados por vuestra vida pensando qué vais a comer, ni por vuestro cuerpo pensando con qué os vais a vestir. ¿No vale más la vida que el alimento, y el cuerpo que el vestido?
Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you more important than they?26 Mirad los pájaros del cielo: no siembran ni siegan, ni almacenan y, sin embargo, vuestro Padre celestial los alimenta. ¿No valéis vosotros más que ellos?
Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span?
Why are you anxious about clothes? Learn from the way the wild flowers grow. They do not work or spin.28 ¿Por qué os agobiáis por el vestido?
But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them.29 Y os digo que ni Salomón, en todo su fasto, estaba vestido como uno de ellos.
If God so clothes the grass of the field, which grows today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow, will he not much more provide for you, O you of little faith?30 Pues si a la hierba, que hoy está en el campo y mañana se arroja al horno, Dios la viste así, ¿no hará mucho más por vosotros, gente de poca fe?
So do not worry and say, 'What are we to eat?' or 'What are we to drink?' or 'What are we to wear?'31 No andéis agobiados pensando qué vais a comer, o qué vais a beber, o con qué os vais a vestir.
All these things the pagans seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.32 Los paganos se afanan por esas cosas.
But seek first the kingdom (of God) and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides.33 Buscad sobre todo el reino de Dios y su justicia; y todo esto se os dará por añadidura.
Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil.34 Por tanto, no os agobiéis por el mañana, porque el mañana traerá su propio agobio. A cada día le basta su desgracia.
