1 Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said,	1 Allora, alcuni farisei e scribi venuti da Gerusalemme avvicinarono Gesù e gli dissero:
2 "Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They do not wash (their) hands when they eat a meal."	2 «Per quale motivo i tuoi discepoli trasgrediscono la tradizione degli antichi? Poiché non si lavano le mani al momento di mangiare».
3 He said to them in reply, "And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?	3 Ma egli replicò: «E voi, per qual motivo trasgredite il comandamento di Dio in nome della vostra tradizione?
4 For God said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and 'Whoever curses father or mother shall die.'	4 Iddio, infatti, ha detto: Onora il padre e la madre, e chi maledice padre e madre sia messo a morte;
5 But you say, 'Whoever says to father or mother, "Any support you might have had from me is dedicated to God,"	5 voi, invece, dite: “Chiunque dice al padre e alla madre: ‘ È offerta sacra ciò con cui avrei dovuto aiutarvi’,
6 need not honor his father.' You have nullified the word of God for the sake of your tradition.	6 non è più tenuto a onorare suo padre e sua madre”, e così avete annullata la parola di Dio in nome della vostra tradizione.
7 Hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy about you when he said:	7 Ipocriti, ha ben profetizzato di voi Isaia dicendo:
8 'This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me;	8 Questo popolo mi onora con le labbra; ma il suo cuore è lontano da me.
9 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts.'"	9 È vano il culto che mi rendono, insegnando dottrine che sono precetti umani».
10 He summoned the crowd and said to them, "Hear and understand.	10 E, chiamata a sé la folla, disse: «Ascoltate e comprendete!
11 It is not what enters one's mouth that defiles that person; but what comes out of the mouth is what defiles one."	11 Non è ciò che entra nella bocca quel che contamina l’uomo, ma ciò che esce dalla bocca, questo contamina l’uomo!»
12 Then his disciples approached and said to him, "Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said?"	12 Allora i discepoli gli si avvicinarono e gli dissero: «Sai che i farisei si sono scandalizzati nel sentirti dir questo?»
13 He said in reply, "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted.	13 Egli rispose: «Ogni pianta che non è stata piantata dal mio Padre celeste sarà sradicata.
14 Let them alone; they are blind guides (of the blind). If a blind person leads a blind person, both will fall into a pit."	14 Lasciateli: son ciechi, guide di ciechi. Ora, se un cieco guida un altro cieco entrambi cadranno in un fosso».
15 Then Peter said to him in reply, "Explain (this) parable to us."	15 Pietro prese la parola e disse: «Spiegaci la parabola».
16 He said to them, "Are even you still without understanding?	16 Gesù disse: «Siete ancora, anche voi, senza intelligenza?
17 Do you not realize that everything that enters the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled into the latrine?	17 Non capite che tutto ciò che entra nella bocca passa nel ventre ed è evacuato nella fogna?
18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile.	18 Ciò, invece, che esce dalla bocca esce dal cuore, e questo è quel che contamina l’uomo.
19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, unchastity, theft, false witness, blasphemy.	19 Dal cuore, difatti, escono pensieri cattivi, omicidi, adulteri, fornicazioni, furti, false testimonianze, bestemmie.
20 These are what defile a person, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile."	20 Queste son le cose che contaminano l’uomo; ma mangiare senza essersi lavate le mani non contamina l’uomo».
21 Then Jesus went from that place and withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.	21 Partito di là, Gesù si ritirò nelle parti di Tiro e Sidone.
22 And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, "Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon."	22 Ed ecco una donna cananea, venuta da quel territorio, si mise a gridare: «Abbi pietà di me, Signore, Figlio di Davide! Mia figlia è crudelmente tormentata da un demonio».
23 But he did not say a word in answer to her. His disciples came and asked him, "Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us."	23 Gesù non rispose nulla. Allora i suoi discepoli, avvicinatisi, gli chiedevano: «Rimandala, perché ci grida dietro».
24 He said in reply, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."	24 Ma egli rispose: «Io sono stato mandato soltanto alle pecore perdute della casa d’Israele».
25 But the woman came and did him homage, saying, "Lord, help me."	25 Ma la donna venne a prostrarsi dinanzi a lui dicendo: «Signore, soccorrimi!»
26 He said in reply, "It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs."	26 Gesù rispose: «Non è bene prendere il pane dei sn per gettarlo ai cagnolini».
27 She said, "Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters."	27 Quella disse: «È vero, Signore; però anche i cagnolini mangiano le briciole che cadono dalla mensa dei loro padroni».
28 Then Jesus said to her in reply, "O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." And her daughter was healed from that hour.	28 Allora Gesù le rispose: «O donna, grande è la tua fede; ti sia fatto come desideri». E in quel momento la figlia della donna guarì.
29 Moving on from there Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, went up on the mountain, and sat down there.	29 Partitosi di là, Gesù si recò sulle rive del lago di Galilea, salì sulla montagna e là si fermò.
30 Great crowds came to him, having with them the lame, the blind, the deformed, the mute, and many others. They placed them at his feet, and he cured them.	30 E gli si avvicinarono molte folle che avevano con sé zoppi, storpi, ciechi, sordi e molti altri ancora; e li deposero ai suoi piedi, ed egli li guarì.
31 The crowds were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the deformed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind able to see, and they glorified the God of Israel.	31 E le folle eran piene di ammirazione vedendo muti parlare, storpi guarire, zoppi camminare e ciechi vedere; e glorificarono il Dio d’Israele.
32 Jesus summoned his disciples and said, "My heart is moved with pity for the crowd, for they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, for fear they may collapse on the way."	32 Ora Gesù, chiamati a sé i discepoli, disse: «Ho pietà di questa folla, perché già da tre giorni stanno con me e non hanno da mangiare; e rimandarli digiuni non voglio: potrebbero venir meno per via».
33 The disciples said to him, "Where could we ever get enough bread in this deserted place to satisfy such a crowd?"	33 I discepoli gli dicono: «Dove possiamo procurarci, in un deserto, tanti pani da saziare tanta folla?»
34 Jesus said to them, "How many loaves do you have?" "Seven," they replied, "and a few fish."	34 Gesù dice loro: «Quanti pani avete?» «Sette — quelli dissero — e pochi pesciolini».
35 He ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground.	35 E allora ordinò alla folla di stendersi per terra,
36 Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, gave thanks, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds.	36 prese i sette pani e i pesci, e, rese grazie, li spezzò e li diede ai discepoli, e i discepoli alle folle.
37 They all ate and were satisfied. They picked up the fragments left over--seven baskets full.	37 E mangiarono tutti a sazietà, e portarono via sette ceste piene dei pezzetti avanzati.
38 Those who ate were four thousand men, not counting women and children.	38 Quelli che avevano mangiato erano quattromila uomini, senza contare donne e bambini.
39 And when he had dismissed the crowds, he got into the boat and came to the district of Magadan.	39 E, dopo aver congedato le folle, salì in barca e si recò nel territorio di Magadan.
