Oracle about Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum of Elkosh.1 Poema sobre Nínive. Libro de la visión de Nahún de Elcós.
A jealous and avenging God is the LORD, an avenger is the LORD, and angry; The LORD brings vengeance on his adversaries, and lays up wrath for his enemies;2 (Álef) Dios celoso y vengador, el Señor; | el Señor es vengador y experto en furor; | el Señor es vengador de sus enemigos, | duro con sus adversarios.
The LORD is slow to anger, yet great in power, and the LORD never leaves the guilty unpunished. In hurricane and tempest is his path, and clouds are the dust at his feet;3 El Señor es paciente y fuerte, | nada deja sin castigo el Señor. (Bet) Camina sobre la tormenta y la tempestad, | la nube es el polvo de sus pies.
He rebukes the sea and leaves it dry, and all the rivers he dries up. Withered are Bashan and Carmel, and the bloom of Lebanon fades;4 (Guímel) Increpa al mar y lo seca, | agosta todos los ríos; (Dálet) se marchitan el Basán y el Carmelo, | la flora del Líbano se marchita.
The mountains quake before him, and the hills dissolve; The earth is laid waste before him, the world and all who dwell in it.5 (He) Las montañas tiemblan ante él, | las colinas se disuelven; (Vau) se alza la tierra ante él, | la tierra firme y todos sus habitantes.
Before his wrath, who can stand firm, and who can face his blazing anger? His fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are rent asunder before him.6 (Zain) ¿Quién resistirá a su ira? | ¿Quién aguantará el ardor de su cólera? (Jet) Su furor se derrama como fuego, | las rocas se rompen ante él.
The LORD is good, a refuge on the day of distress; He takes care of those who have recourse to him,7 (Tet) El Señor es buen refugio | el día de la desgracia; (Yod) reconoce a los que se cobijan en él. |
when the flood rages; He makes an end of his opponents, and his enemies he pursues with darkness.8 Con la inundación que pasa (Kaf) arruina el territorio enemigo | y las tinieblas los persiguen.
What are you imputing to the LORD? It is he who will make an end! The enemy shall not rise a second time;9 ¿Qué tramáis contra el Señor? | Él provoca la destrucción, | la desgracia no se repetirá.
As when a tangle of thornbushes is set aflame, like dry stubble, they shall be utterly consumed.10 Pues aunque son resistentes | como zarzal enmarañado, | en su ebria borrachera | son consumidos como esparto reseco.
From you he came who devised evil against the LORD, the scoundrel planner.11 De ti sale el que planea | el mal contra el Señor, | el consejero perverso.
For, says the LORD, be they ever so many and so vigorous, still they shall be mown down and disappear. Though I have humbled you, I will humble you no more.12 Esto dice el Señor: | «Incluso sanos y numerosos serán rapados, | y será cosa pasada. | Si te humillé, no te humillaré más.
Now will I break his yoke from off you, and burst asunder your bonds.13 Voy a romper el yugo | que pesa sobre ti, | arrancaré tus cadenas».
The LORD has commanded regarding you: no descendant shall come to bear your name; From your temple I will abolish the carved and the molten image; I will make your grave a mockery.14 Esta es la orden del Señor para ti: | «No se perpetuará tu linaje; | del templo de tu dios | arrancaré ídolos e imágenes. | ¡Preparo tu tumba, miserable!».
