Hosea 4

1 Hear the word of the LORD, O people of Israel, for the LORD has a grievance against the inhabitants of the land: There is no fidelity, no mercy, no knowledge of God in the land.	1 - Ascoltate la parola del Signore, figli d'Israele, perchè il Signore vuol contendere in giustizia cogli abitanti della terra; perchè non c'è verità, non c'è misericordia, non c'è scienza di Dio sulla terra.
2 False swearing, lying, murder, stealing and adultery! in their lawlessness, bloodshed follows bloodshed.	2 «Lo spergiuro, la menzogna, l'omicidio, il furto, l'adulterio hanno dilagato, e un fatto di sangue tira l'altro.
3 Therefore the land mourns, and everything that dwells in it languishes: The beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and even the fish of the sea perish.	3 Per questo sarà nel duolo la terra e nell'abbattimento ogni suo abitante, dall'animale delle campagne, ai volatili del cielo; finanche i pesci del mare scompariranno.
4 But let no one protest, let no one complain; with you is my grievance, O priests!	4 E intanto che alcuno non rinfacci, non redarguisca alcuno; il tuo popolo infatti è come coloro che contradicono al sacerdote.
5 You shall stumble in the day, and the prophets shall stumble with you at night; I will destroy your mother.	5 Cadrai di giorno, e cadrà anche teco il profeta di notte: e farò perire tua madre.
6 My people perish for want of knowledge! Since you have rejected knowledge, I will reject you from my priesthood; Since you have ignored the law of your God, I will also ignore your sons.	6 Muto è diventato il mio popolo, per non aver avuto la scienza; e giacchè la scienza tu l'hai rigettata, rigetterò io te dal ministero di mio sacerdote; tu hai dimenticato la legge del tuo Dio, ed io pure dimenticherò i tuoi figliuoli.
7 One and all they sin against me, exchanging their glory for shame.	7 Col crescere di numero, crescono nei peccati contro di me, ma io cambierò la loro gloria in ignominia.
8 They feed on the sin of my people, and are greedy for their guilt.	8 Campano sui peccati del mio popolo e tendono il loro animo alla loro iniquità.
9 The priests shall fare no better than the people: I will punish them for their ways, and repay them for their deeds.	9 Ma sarà come del popolo, così del sacerdote, ed io chiederò conto a ciascuno della sua condotta e renderò a ciascuno il fatto suo.
10 They shall eat but not be satisfied, they shall play the harlot but not increase, Because they have abandoned the LORD	10 E mangeranno, ma non si satolleranno; hanno fornicato senza trovar quiete, perchè hanno abbandonato il Signore col non curarsi di lui.
11 to practice harlotry. Old wine and new deprive my people of understanding.	11 La fornicazione, il vino e l'ubriachezza tolgono il senno.
12 They consult their piece of wood, and their wand makes pronouncements for them, For the spirit of harlotry has led them astray; they commit harlotry, forsaking their God.	12 Il mio popolo ha consultato il suo legno, e la sua bacchetta divinatoria gli ha pronosticato, perchè lo spirito di fornicazione li trasse nell'errore ed hanno fornicato apostatando dal loro Dio.
13 On the mountaintops they offer sacrifice and on the hills they burn incense, Beneath oak and poplar and terebinth, because of their pleasant shade. That is why your daughters play the harlot, and your daughters-in-law are adulteresses.	13 Sulle sommità dei monti hanno sacrificato e sui colli ardevano profumi; sotto la quercia, il pioppo e il terebinto, perchè è comoda ombra; perciò le vostre figliuole si prostituiranno, e le vostre spose commetteranno adulterio.
14 Am I then to punish your daughters for their harlotry, your daughters-in-law for their adultery? You yourselves consort with harlots, and with prostitutes you offer sacrifice! So must a people without understanding come to ruin.	14 Non chiederò conto alle vostre figlie se si sono prostituite, nè alle vostre spose se hanno commesso adulterio, perchè essi stessi si appartano con le meretrici, e sacrificano con le prostitute, ed il popolo ignorante andrà a precipizio.
15 Though you play the harlot, O Israel, let not Judah become guilty! Come not to Gilgal, nor up to Beth-aven, to swear, "As the Lord lives!"	15 Se fornichi, tu, o Israele, almeno Giuda non si renda colpevole; e non intervenite a Galgala, nè salite a Betaven al grido votivo di: "Vive il Signore!"
16 For Israel is as stubborn as a heifer; will the LORD now give them broad pastures as though they were lambs?	16 Perchè Israele come una vacca ritrosa s'è sbandato, ma a momenti lo pascolerà il Signore come agnello in campo aperto.
17 Ephraim is an associate of idols, let him alone!	17 Efraim è in comunione cogli idoli; lascialo!
18 When their carousing is over, they give themselves to harlotry; in their arrogance they love shame.	18 Quando il loro simposio s'è sciolto, si sono prostituiti, i loro protettori hanno gareggiato a recare disonore.
19 The wind has bound them up in its pinions; they shall have only shame from their altars.	19 Il vento se li è legati alle ali e resteranno svergognati dai loro sacrifizii.
