Hosea 4

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 Hear the word of the LORD, O people of Israel, for the LORD has a grievance against the inhabitants of the land: There is no fidelity, no mercy, no knowledge of God in the land.	1 Ecoutez la parole de Yahvé, enfants d'Israël, car Yahvé est en procès avec les habitants du pays: il n'ya ni fidélité ni amour, ni connaissance de Dieu dans le pays,
2 False swearing, lying, murder, stealing and adultery! in their lawlessness, bloodshed follows bloodshed.	2 mais parjure et mensonge, assassinat et vol, adultère et violence, et le sang versé succède au sangversé.
3 Therefore the land mourns, and everything that dwells in it languishes: The beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and even the fish of the sea perish.	3 Voilà pourquoi le pays est en deuil et tous ses habitants dépérissent, jusqu'aux bêtes des champs et auxoiseaux du ciel, et même les poissons de la mer disparaîtront.
4 But let no one protest, let no one complain; with you is my grievance, O priests!	4 Pourtant que nul n'intente procès, que nul ne réprimande! C'est avec toi, prêtre, que je suis en procès.
5 You shall stumble in the day, and the prophets shall stumble with you at night; I will destroy your mother.	5 Tu trébucheras en plein jour, le prophète aussi trébuchera, la nuit, avec toi, et je ferai périr ta mère.
6 My people perish for want of knowledge! Since you have rejected knowledge, I will reject you from my priesthood; Since you have ignored the law of your God, I will also ignore your sons.	6 Mon peuple périt, faute de connaissance. Puisque toi, tu as rejeté la connaissance, je te rejetterai demon sacerdoce; puisque tu as oublié l'enseignement de ton Dieu, à mon tour, j'oublierai tes fils.
7 One and all they sin against me, exchanging their glory for shame.	7 Tous tant qu'ils sont, ils ont péché contre moi, ils ont échangé leur Gloire contre l'Ignominie.
8 They feed on the sin of my people, and are greedy for their guilt.	8 Du péché de mon peuple, ils se nourrissent, de sa faute, ils sont avides.
9 The priests shall fare no better than the people: I will punish them for their ways, and repay them for their deeds.	9 Mais il en sera du prêtre comme du peuple: je lui ferai expier sa conduite, je lui revaudrai ses oeuvres.
10 They shall eat but not be satisfied, they shall play the harlot but not increase, Because they have abandoned the LORD	10 Ils mangeront, mais sans se rassasier, ils se prostitueront, mais sans s'accroître, car ils ont abandonnéYahvé pour se livrer
11 to practice harlotry. Old wine and new deprive my people of understanding.	11 à la prostitution. Le vin et le moût font perdre le sens.
12 They consult their piece of wood, and their wand makes pronouncements for them, For the spirit of harlotry has led them astray; they commit harlotry, forsaking their God.	12 Mon peuple consulte son morceau de bois, c'est son bâton qui le renseigne; car un esprit deprostitution les égare, et ils se prostituent, s'éloignant de leur Dieu.
13 On the mountaintops they offer sacrifice and on the hills they burn incense, Beneath oak and poplar and terebinth, because of their pleasant shade. That is why your daughters play the harlot, and your daughters-in-law are adulteresses.	13 Sur le sommet des montagnes, ils sacrifient, sur les collines, ils brûlent de l'encens, sous le chêne, lepeuplier et le térébinthe, car leur ombrage est bon. Voilà pourquoi, si vos filles se prostituent, si vos bruscommettent l'adultère,
14 Am I then to punish your daughters for their harlotry, your daughters-in-law for their adultery? You yourselves consort with harlots, and with prostitutes you offer sacrifice! So must a people without understanding come to ruin.	14 je ne châtierai pas vos filles pour leurs prostitutions, ni vos brus pour leurs adultères; car eux-mêmesvont à l'écart avec les prostituées, ils sacrifient avec les hiérodules, et le peuple, sans discernement, va à sa perte!
15 Though you play the harlot, O Israel, let not Judah become guilty! Come not to Gilgal, nor up to Beth-aven, to swear, "As the Lord lives!"	15 Si toi, tu te prostitues, Israël, Que Juda ne se rende pas coupable! N'allez pas à Gilgal, ne montez pasà Bet-Aven, et ne jurez pas "par la vie de Yahvé."
16 For Israel is as stubborn as a heifer; will the LORD now give them broad pastures as though they were lambs?	16 Car tel une vache rétive, Israël a été rétif; et maintenant Yahvé le ferait paître comme un agneau dansun vaste pacage?
17 Ephraim is an associate of idols, let him alone!	17 Ephraïm est l'allié des idoles, laisse-le!
18 When their carousing is over, they give themselves to harlotry; in their arrogance they love shame.	18 Leur beuverie terminée, ils ne font que se prostituer; ils préfèrent l'Ignominie à leur Orgueil.
19 The wind has bound them up in its pinions; they shall have only shame from their altars.	19 Le vent les emportera de ses ailes, et ils auront honte de leurs sacrifices.
