Sirach 48

1 Till like a fire there appeared the prophet whose words were as a flaming furnace.	1 Poi, come fuoco, sorse il profeta Elia, la parola del quale era ardente come fiaccola.
2 Their staff of bread he shattered, in his zeal he reduced them to straits;	2 Egli fece venire contro di essi la fame: quelli che per invidia lo perseguitavano furon ridotti a pochi, per non poter sopportare i precetti del Signore.
3 By God's word he shut up the heavens and three times brought down fire.	3 Per la parola del Signore chiuse il cielo, e dal cielo fece cadere tre volte il fuoco.
4 How awesome are you, ELIJAH! Whose glory is equal to yours?	4 Così Elia si rese glorioso coi suoi miracoli. E chi può vantarsene come te,
5 You brought a dead man back to life from the nether world, by the will of the LORD.	5 che togliesti un morto dall'inferno e dal dominio della morte, colla parola del Signore Dio,
6 You sent kings down to destruction, and nobles, from their beds of sickness.	6 che abbattesti i re fino allo sterminio, ne fiaccasti senza fatica la potenza, (e facesti cadere) dal loro letto gli orgogliosi,
7 You heard threats at Sinai, at Horeb avenging judgments.	7 che ascoltasti sul Sinai il giudizio e sull'Oreb i decreti di vendetta,
8 You anointed kings who should inflict vengeance, and a prophet as your successor.	8 che ungesti dei re esecutori di vendette e dei profeti dopo di te, come tuoi successori,
9 You were taken aloft in a whirlwind, in a chariot with fiery horses.	9 che fosti rapito in un turbine di fuoco su cocchio tirato da cavalli di fuoco,
10 You are destined, it is written, in time to come to put an end to wrath before the day of the LORD, To turn back the hearts of fathers toward their sons, and to reestablish the tribes of Jacob.	10 che sei scritto nei decreti dei tempi, per placare lo sdegno del Signore, conciliare il cuore del padre col figlio e ristabilire le tribù di Giacobbe?
11 Blessed is he who shall have seen you before he dies,	11 Beati quelli che ti videro ed ebbero la gloria di averti amico.
12 O Elijah, enveloped in the whirlwind! Then ELISHA, filled with a twofold portion of his spirit, wrought many marvels by his mere word. During his lifetime he feared no one, nor was any man able to intimidate his will.	12 Infatti noi vi viamo in questa vita solamente, dopo la morte non sarà tale il nostro nome.
13 Nothing was beyond his power; beneath him flesh was brought back into life.	13 Or Elia disparve nel turbine, ed Eliseo ebbe la pienezza dello spirito di lui. In vita non ebbe paura di nessun principe, e nessuno potè vincerlo colla potenza.
14 In life he performed wonders, and after death, marvelous deeds.	14 Nessuna cosa ebbe potere su lui, ed anche morto il suo corpo profetò.
15 Despite all this the people did not repent, nor did they give up their sins, Until they were rooted out of their land and scattered all over the earth. But Judah remained, a tiny people, with its rulers from the house of David.	15 Da vivo fece straordinari prodigi, da morto fece cose maravigliose.
16 Some of these did what was right, but others were extremely sinful.	16 Nonostante tutto questo il popolo non fece penitenza, non lasciarono i loro peccati, finché non furon cacciati dal loro paese e dispersi per tutta la terra.
17 HEZEKIAH fortified his city and had water brought into it; With iron tools he cut through the rock and he built reservoirs for water.	17 E restò pochissima gente e un principe della casa di David.
18 During his reign Sennacherib led an invasion and sent his adjutant; He shook his fist at Zion and blasphemed God in his pride.	18 Alcuni di essi fecero ciò che piaceva a Dio, altri invece commisero molti peccati.
19 The people's hearts melted within them, and they were in anguish like that of childbirth.	19 Ezechia fortificò la città, condusse l'acqua in mezzo di essa, tagliò a forza di ferro la rupe e costruì dei serbatoi per l'acqua.
20 But they called upon the Most High God and lifted up their hands to him; He heard the prayer they uttered, and saved them through ISAIAH.	20 Ai tempi di lui montò Sennacherib, mandò il Rabsace, alzò la mano contro di loro, steso la mano contro Sion, fatto superbo dalla sua potenza.
21 God struck the camp of the Assyrians and routed them with a plague.	21 Allora ad essi tremarono i cuori, caddero le braccia, e provarono dolori come donne partorienti,
22 For Hezekiah did what was right and held fast to the paths of David, As ordered by the illustrious prophet Isaiah, who saw the truth in visions.	22 e invocarono il Signore misericordioso, e stesero le loro mani, le alzarono ai cielo, e il santo Signore Iddio ascoltò subito la loro voce.
23 In his lifetime he turned back the sun and prolonged the life of the king.	23 Non si ricordò più dei loro peccati, non li abbandonò ai loro nemici, ma li purificò per mezzo del santo profeta Isaia.
24 By his powerful spirit he looked into the future and consoled the mourners of Zion;	24 Egli percosse il campo degli Assiri e l'angelo del Signore li sterminò;
25 He foretold what should be till the end of time, hidden things yet to be fulfilled.	25 perchè Ezechia fece ciò che piaceva a Dio, e procedè coraggiosamente nelle vie di David suo padre, secondo le raccomandazioni d'Isaia, gran profeta e fedele nel cospetto di Dio.
	26 Al tempo di lui il sole tornò indietro, ed egli prolungò la vita del re.
	27 Egli con grande spirito vide gli ultimi tempi e con solò chi piangeva in Sion; fino alla fine dei tempi mostrò l'avvenire e le cose nascoste prima che avvenissero.
