Sirach 48

1 Till like a fire there appeared the prophet whose words were as a flaming furnace.	1 Allora sorse Elia profeta, come un fuoco; la sua parola bruciava come fiaccola.
2 Their staff of bread he shattered, in his zeal he reduced them to straits;	2 Egli fece venire su di loro la carestia e con zelo li ridusse a pochi.
3 By God's word he shut up the heavens and three times brought down fire.	3 Per la parola del Signore chiuse il cielo e così fece scendere per tre volte il fuoco.
4 How awesome are you, ELIJAH! Whose glory is equal to yours?	4 Come ti rendesti glorioso, Elia, con i tuoi prodigi! E chi può vantarsi di esserti uguale?
5 You brought a dead man back to life from the nether world, by the will of the LORD.	5 Tu hai fatto sorgere un defunto dalla morte e dagl’inferi, per la parola dell’Altissimo;
6 You sent kings down to destruction, and nobles, from their beds of sickness.	6 tu hai fatto precipitare re nella perdizione, e uomini gloriosi dal loro letto.
7 You heard threats at Sinai, at Horeb avenging judgments.	7 Tu sul Sinai hai ascoltato parole di rimprovero, sull’Oreb sentenze di condanna.
8 You anointed kings who should inflict vengeance, and a prophet as your successor.	8 Hai unto re per la vendetta e profeti come tuoi successori.
9 You were taken aloft in a whirlwind, in a chariot with fiery horses.	9 Tu sei stato assunto in un turbine di fuoco, su un carro di cavalli di fuoco;
10 You are destined, it is written, in time to come to put an end to wrath before the day of the LORD, To turn back the hearts of fathers toward their sons, and to reestablish the tribes of Jacob.	10 tu sei stato designato a rimproverare i tempi futuri, per placare l’ira prima che divampi, per ricondurre il cuore del padre verso il figlio e ristabilire le tribù di Giacobbe.
11 Blessed is he who shall have seen you before he dies,	11 Beati coloro che ti hanno visto e si sono addormentati nell’amore, perché è certo che anche noi vivremo.
12 O Elijah, enveloped in the whirlwind! Then ELISHA, filled with a twofold portion of his spirit, wrought many marvels by his mere word. During his lifetime he feared no one, nor was any man able to intimidate his will.	12 Appena Elia fu avvolto dal turbine, Eliseo fu ripieno del suo spirito; nei suoi giorni non tremò davanti a nessun principe e nessuno riuscì a dominarlo.
13 Nothing was beyond his power; beneath him flesh was brought back into life.	13 Nulla fu troppo grande per lui, e nel sepolcro il suo corpo profetizzò.
14 In life he performed wonders, and after death, marvelous deeds.	14 Nella sua vita compì prodigi, e dopo la morte meravigliose furono le sue opere.
15 Despite all this the people did not repent, nor did they give up their sins, Until they were rooted out of their land and scattered all over the earth. But Judah remained, a tiny people, with its rulers from the house of David.	15 Con tutto ciò il popolo non si convertì e non rinnegò i suoi peccati, finché non fu deportato dal proprio paese e disperso su tutta la terra. Rimase soltanto un piccolissimo popolo e un principe della casa di Davide.
16 Some of these did what was right, but others were extremely sinful.	16 Alcuni di loro fecero ciò che è gradito a Dio, ma altri moltiplicarono i peccati.
17 HEZEKIAH fortified his city and had water brought into it; With iron tools he cut through the rock and he built reservoirs for water.	17 Ezechia fortificò la sua città e portò l’acqua nel suo interno; con il ferro scavò un canale nella roccia e costruì cisterne per l’acqua.
18 During his reign Sennacherib led an invasion and sent his adjutant; He shook his fist at Zion and blasphemed God in his pride.	18 Nei suoi giorni Sennàcherib fece una spedizione e mandò Rapsache; alzò la sua mano contro Sion e si vantò spavaldamente nella sua superbia.
19 The people's hearts melted within them, and they were in anguish like that of childbirth.	19 Allora si agitarono loro i cuori e le mani, soffrirono come le partorienti.
20 But they called upon the Most High God and lifted up their hands to him; He heard the prayer they uttered, and saved them through ISAIAH.	20 Invocarono il Signore misericordioso, tendendo le loro mani verso di lui. Il Santo li ascoltò subito dal cielo e li liberò per mezzo di Isaia.
21 God struck the camp of the Assyrians and routed them with a plague.	21 Egli colpì l’accampamento degli Assiri, e il suo angelo li sterminò,
22 For Hezekiah did what was right and held fast to the paths of David, As ordered by the illustrious prophet Isaiah, who saw the truth in visions.	22 perché Ezechia aveva fatto quanto è gradito al Signore e aveva seguito con fermezza le vie di Davide, suo padre, come gli aveva indicato il profeta Isaia, grande e degno di fede nella sua visione.
23 In his lifetime he turned back the sun and prolonged the life of the king.	23 Nei suoi giorni il sole retrocedette ed egli prolungò la vita del re.
24 By his powerful spirit he looked into the future and consoled the mourners of Zion;	24 Con grande ispirazione vide gli ultimi tempi e consolò gli afflitti di Sion.
25 He foretold what should be till the end of time, hidden things yet to be fulfilled.	25 Egli manifestò il futuro sino alla fine dei tempi, le cose nascoste prima che accadessero.
