Sirach 48

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Till like a fire there appeared the prophet whose words were as a flaming furnace.	1 Allora sorse Elia, un profeta come il fuoco, la cui parola ardeva come una fiamma.
2 Their staff of bread he shattered, in his zeal he reduced them to straits;	2 Egli portò su di essi la carestia, col suo zelo li ha ridotti di numero.
3 By God's word he shut up the heavens and three times brought down fire.	3 Con la parola del Signore ha chiuso il cielo e così fece scendere per tre volte il fuoco.
4 How awesome are you, ELIJAH! Whose glory is equal to yours?	4 Hai avuto tanta gloria, o Elia, per i tuoi miracoli! Chi può vantarsi al pari di te?
5 You brought a dead man back to life from the nether world, by the will of the LORD.	5 Hai fatto sorgere un cadavere dalla morte e dagl'inferi, con la parola dell'Altissimo.
6 You sent kings down to destruction, and nobles, from their beds of sickness.	6 Hai fatto scendere dei re nella perdizione e uomini gloriosi dal loro letto.
7 You heard threats at Sinai, at Horeb avenging judgments.	7 Hai sentito al Sinai il rimprovero, e all'Oreb il giudizio di condanna.
8 You anointed kings who should inflict vengeance, and a prophet as your successor.	8 Hai unto dei re per la vendetta e profeti che ti fossero successori.
9 You were taken aloft in a whirlwind, in a chariot with fiery horses.	9 Sei stato preso in un turbine di fuoco, con un carro di cavalli infuocati.
10 You are destined, it is written, in time to come to put an end to wrath before the day of the LORD, To turn back the hearts of fathers toward their sons, and to reestablish the tribes of Jacob.	10 Di te è scritto che verrà il tuo tempo, per calmare l'ira prima del furore, per volgere il cuore del padre verso il figlio e ristabilire le tribù di Giacobbe.
11 Blessed is he who shall have seen you before he dies,	11 Beati quelli che ti hanno visto e sono morti nell'amore, perché è certo che noi vivremo.
12 O Elijah, enveloped in the whirlwind! Then ELISHA, filled with a twofold portion of his spirit, wrought many marvels by his mere word. During his lifetime he feared no one, nor was any man able to intimidate his will.	12 Quando Elia fu coperto da un turbine Eliseo fu ripieno del suo spirito; nei suoi giorni non tremò per nessun principe, nessuno l'ha potuto sottomettere.
13 Nothing was beyond his power; beneath him flesh was brought back into life.	13 Niente era per lui difficile, anche sepolto, il suo cadavere profetizzò.
14 In life he performed wonders, and after death, marvelous deeds.	14 Nella sua vita fece prodigi e dopo morte operò meraviglie.
15 Despite all this the people did not repent, nor did they give up their sins, Until they were rooted out of their land and scattered all over the earth. But Judah remained, a tiny people, with its rulers from the house of David.	15 Con tutto ciò il popolo non si è convertito, non hanno rinunciato ai loro peccati, fino a quando sono stati scacciati dalla loro terra e sono stati dispersi in ogni nazione.
16 Some of these did what was right, but others were extremely sinful.	16 E' stato lasciato un piccolo popolo e un principe nella casa di Davide. Alcuni di loro hanno fatto ciò che piace a Dio, altri hanno invece moltiplicato i loro peccati.
17 HEZEKIAH fortified his city and had water brought into it; With iron tools he cut through the rock and he built reservoirs for water.	17 Ezechia ha fortificato la sua città e ha portato l'acqua nel suo interno, ha scavato col ferro la roccia, ha costruito dei pozzi per l'acqua.
18 During his reign Sennacherib led an invasion and sent his adjutant; He shook his fist at Zion and blasphemed God in his pride.	18 Nei suoi giorni salì Sennacherib, che poi inviò Rabsake; sollevò la mano sopra Sion, e si vantò nella sua superbia.
19 The people's hearts melted within them, and they were in anguish like that of childbirth.	19 Allora tremarono loro i cuori e le mani, hanno avuto le doglie come partorienti;
20 But they called upon the Most High God and lifted up their hands to him; He heard the prayer they uttered, and saved them through ISAIAH.	20 hanno invocato il Signore misericordioso stendendo a lui le loro mani; il Santo dal cielo li ha subito esauditi, li ha riscattati per mano d'Isaia.
21 God struck the camp of the Assyrians and routed them with a plague.	21 Ha colpito l'accampamento degli Assiri, il suo angelo li ha spazzati via,
22 For Hezekiah did what was right and held fast to the paths of David, As ordered by the illustrious prophet Isaiah, who saw the truth in visions.	22 perché Ezechia ha fatto quanto piace al Signore, ha perseverato nelle vie di Davide suo padre, come gli aveva indicato il profeta Isaia, grande e verace nella sua visione.
23 In his lifetime he turned back the sun and prolonged the life of the king.	23 Nei suoi giorni fu trattenuto il sole, egli prolungò la vita del re.
24 By his powerful spirit he looked into the future and consoled the mourners of Zion;	24 Con la potenza dell'ispirazione ha visto le cose ultime e ha consolato gli afflitti di Sion.
25 He foretold what should be till the end of time, hidden things yet to be fulfilled.	25 Ha mostrato il futuro sino alla fine, le cose nascoste prima che accadessero.
