NEW AMERICAN BIBLEVULGATA
1 The vengeful will suffer the LORD'S vengeance, for he remembers their sins in detail.1 Qui vindicari vult, a Domino inveniet vindictam,
et peccata illius servans servabit.
2 Forgive your neighbor's injustice; then when you pray, your own sins will be forgiven.2 Relinque proximo tuo nocenti te,
et tunc deprecanti tibi peccata solventur.
3 Should a man nourish anger against his fellows and expect healing from the LORD?3 Homo homini reservat iram,
et a Deo quærit medelam :
4 Should a man refuse mercy to his fellows, yet seek pardon for his own sins?4 in hominem similem sibi non habet misericordiam,
et de peccatis suis deprecatur.
5 If he who is but flesh cherishes wrath, who will forgive his sins?5 Ipse cum caro sit reservat iram,
et propitiationem petit a Deo :
quis exorabit pro delictis illius ?
6 Remember your last days, set enmity aside; remember death and decay, and cease from sin!6 Memento novissimorum, et desine inimicari :
7 Think of the commandments, hate not your neighbor; of the Most High's covenant, and overlook faults.7 tabitudo enim et mors imminent in mandatis ejus.
8 Avoid strife and your sins will be fewer, for a quarrelsome man kindles disputes,8 Memorare timorem Dei,
et non irascaris proximo.
9 Commits the sin of disrupting friendship and sows discord among those at peace.9 Memorare testamentum Altissimi,
et despice ignorantiam proximi.
10 The more wood, the greater the fire, the more underlying it, the fiercer the fight; The greater a man's strength, the sterner his anger, the greater his power, the greater his wrath.10 Abstine te a lite,
et minues peccata.
11 Pitch and resin make fires flare up, and insistent quarrels provoke bloodshed.11 Homo enim iracundus incendit litem,
et vir peccator turbabit amicos,
et in medio pacem habentium immittet inimicitiam.
12 If you blow upon a spark, it quickens into flame, if you spit on it, it dies out; yet both you do with your mouth!12 Secundum enim ligna silvæ sic ignis exardescit :
et secundum virtutem hominis sic iracundia illius erit,
et secundum substantiam suam exaltabit iram suam.
13 Cursed be gossips and the double-tongued, for they destroy the peace of many.13 Certamen festinatum incendit ignem,
et lis festinans effundit sanguinem :
et lingua testificans adducit mortem.
14 A meddlesome tongue subverts many, and makes them refugees among the peoples; It destroys walled cities, and overthrows powerful dynasties.14 Si sufflaveris in scintillam, quasi ignis exardebit :
et si exspueris super illam, extinguetur :
utraque ex ore proficiscuntur.
15 A meddlesome tongue can drive virtuous women from their homes and rob them of the fruit of their toil;15 Susurro et bilinguis maledictus,
multos enim turbabit pacem habentes.
16 Whoever heeds it has no rest, nor can he dwell in peace.16 Lingua tertia multos commovit,
et dispersit illos de gente in gentem.
17 A blow from a whip raises a welt, but a blow from the tongue smashes bones;17 Civitates muratas divitum destruxit,
et domus magnatorum effodit.
18 Many have fallen by the edge of the sword, but not as many as by the tongue.18 Virtutes populorum concidit,
et gentes fortes dissolvit.
19 Happy he who is sheltered from it, and has not endured its wrath; Who has not borne its yoke nor been fettered with its chain;19 Lingua tertia mulieres viratas ejecit,
et privavit illas laboribus suis.
20 For its yoke is a yoke of iron and its chains are chains of bronze!20 Qui respicit illam non habebit requiem,
nec habebit amicum in quo requiescat.
21 Dire is the death it inflicts, besides which even the nether world is a gain;21 Flagelli plaga livorem facit :
plaga autem linguæ comminuet ossa.
22 It will not take hold among the just nor scorch them in its flame,22 Multi ceciderunt in ore gladii :
sed non sic quasi qui interierunt per linguam suam.
23 But those who forsake the LORD will fall victims to it, as it burns among them unquenchably! It will hurl itself against them like a lion; like a panther, it will tear them to pieces.23 Beatus qui tectus est a lingua nequam,
qui in iracundiam illius non transivit,
et qui non attraxit jugum illius,
et in vinculis ejus non est ligatus :
24 As you hedge round your vineyard with thorns, set barred doors over your mouth;24 jugum enim illius jugum ferreum est,
et vinculum illius vinculum æreum est ;
25 As you seal up your silver and gold, so balance and weigh your words.25 mors illius mors nequissima :
et utilis potius infernus quam illa.
26 Take care not to slip by your tongue and fall victim to your foe waiting in ambush.26 Perseverantia illius non permanebit,
sed obtinebit vias injustorum,
et in flamma sua non comburet justos.
27 Qui relinquunt Deum incident in illam,
et exardebit in illis, et non extinguetur,
et immittetur in illos quasi leo,
et quasi pardus lædet illos.
28 Sepi aures tuas spinis :
linguam nequam noli audire :
et ori tuo facito ostia et seras.
29 Aurum tuum et argentum tuum confla,
et verbis tuis facito stateram,
et frenos ori tuo rectos :
30 et attende ne forte labaris in lingua,
et cadas in conspectu inimicorum insidiantium tibi,
et sit casus tuus insanabilis in mortem.
