Sirach 28

1 The vengeful will suffer the LORD'S vengeance, for he remembers their sins in detail.	1 Chi si vendica avrà la vendetta dal Signore ed egli terrà sempre presenti i suoi peccati.
2 Forgive your neighbor's injustice; then when you pray, your own sins will be forgiven.	2 Perdona l'offesa al tuo prossimo e allora per la tua preghiera ti saranno rimessi i peccati.
3 Should a man nourish anger against his fellows and expect healing from the LORD?	3 Se qualcuno conserva la collera verso un altro uomo, come oserà chiedere la guarigione al Signore?
4 Should a man refuse mercy to his fellows, yet seek pardon for his own sins?	4 Egli non ha misericordia per l'uomo suo simile, e osa pregare per i suoi peccati?
5 If he who is but flesh cherishes wrath, who will forgive his sins?	5 Egli, che è soltanto carne, conserva rancore; chi perdonerà i suoi peccati?
6 Remember your last days, set enmity aside; remember death and decay, and cease from sin!	6 Ricòrdati della tua fine e smetti di odiare, ricòrdati della corruzione e della morte e resta fedele ai comandamenti.
7 Think of the commandments, hate not your neighbor; of the Most High's covenant, and overlook faults.	7 Ricòrdati dei comandamenti e non aver rancore verso il prossimo, dell'alleanza con l'Altissimo e non far conto dell'offesa subìta.
8 Avoid strife and your sins will be fewer, for a quarrelsome man kindles disputes,	8 Astieniti dalle risse e sarai lontano dal peccato, perché un uomo passionale attizza una rissa.
9 Commits the sin of disrupting friendship and sows discord among those at peace.	9 Un uomo peccatore semina discordia tra gli amici e tra persone pacifiche diffonde calunnie.
10 The more wood, the greater the fire, the more underlying it, the fiercer the fight; The greater a man's strength, the sterner his anger, the greater his power, the greater his wrath.	10 Secondo la materia del fuoco, esso s'infiamma, una rissa divampa secondo la sua violenza; il furore di un uomo è proporzionato alla sua forza, la sua ira cresce in base alla sua ricchezza.
11 Pitch and resin make fires flare up, and insistent quarrels provoke bloodshed.	11 Una lite concitata accende il fuoco, una rissa violenta fa versare sangue.
12 If you blow upon a spark, it quickens into flame, if you spit on it, it dies out; yet both you do with your mouth!	12 Se soffi su una scintilla, si accende; se vi sputi sopra, si spegne; eppure ambedue le cose escono dalla tua bocca.
13 Cursed be gossips and the double-tongued, for they destroy the peace of many.	13 Maledici il delatore e l'uomo di doppia lingua, perché fa perire molti che vivono in pace.
14 A meddlesome tongue subverts many, and makes them refugees among the peoples; It destroys walled cities, and overthrows powerful dynasties.	14 Una lingua malèdica ha sconvolto molti, li ha scacciati di nazione in nazione; ha demolito forti città e ha rovinato casati potenti.
15 A meddlesome tongue can drive virtuous women from their homes and rob them of the fruit of their toil;	15 Una lingua malèdica ha fatto ripudiare donne eccellenti, privandole del frutto delle loro fatiche.
16 Whoever heeds it has no rest, nor can he dwell in peace.	16 Chi le presta attenzione non trova pace, dalla sua dimora scompare la serenità.
17 A blow from a whip raises a welt, but a blow from the tongue smashes bones;	17 Un colpo di frusta produce lividure, ma un colpo di lingua rompe le ossa.
18 Many have fallen by the edge of the sword, but not as many as by the tongue.	18 Molti sono caduti a fil di spada, ma non quanti sono periti per colpa della lingua.
19 Happy he who is sheltered from it, and has not endured its wrath; Who has not borne its yoke nor been fettered with its chain;	19 Beato chi se ne guarda, chi non è esposto al suo furore, chi non ha trascinato il suo giogo e non è stato legato con le sue catene.
20 For its yoke is a yoke of iron and its chains are chains of bronze!	20 Il suo giogo è un giogo di ferro; le sue catene catene di bronzo.
21 Dire is the death it inflicts, besides which even the nether world is a gain;	21 Spaventosa è la morte che procura, in confronto è preferibile la tomba.
22 It will not take hold among the just nor scorch them in its flame,	22 Essa non ha potere sugli uomini pii, questi non bruceranno alla sua fiamma.
23 But those who forsake the LORD will fall victims to it, as it burns among them unquenchably! It will hurl itself against them like a lion; like a panther, it will tear them to pieces.	23 Quanti abbandonano il Signore in essa cadranno, fra costoro divamperà senza spegnersi. Si avventerà contro di loro come un leone e come una pantera ne farà scempio.
24 As you hedge round your vineyard with thorns, set barred doors over your mouth;	24 Ecco, recingi pure la tua proprietà con siepe spinosa, lega in un sacchetto l'argento e l'oro,
25 As you seal up your silver and gold, so balance and weigh your words.	25 ma controlla anche le tue parole pesandole e chiudi con porte e catenaccio la bocca.
26 Take care not to slip by your tongue and fall victim to your foe waiting in ambush.	26 Sta' attento a non sbagliare a causa della lingua, perché tu non cada davanti a chi ti insidia.
