Sirach 27

1 For the sake of profit many sin, and the struggle for wealth blinds the eyes.	1 Molti peccarono per la miseria e chi cerca d'arricchire non guarda altro.
2 Like a peg driven between fitted stones, between buying and selling sin is wedged in.	2 Come il palo si ficca tra due pietre unite, così il peccato si ficca tra la compra e la vendita.
3 Unless you earnestly hold fast to the fear of the LORD, suddenly your house will be thrown down.	3 Ma il peccato e il peccatore saran distrutti.
4 When a sieve is shaken, the husks appear; so do a man's faults when he speaks.	4 Se non ti tieni con tinuamente saldo nel timor del Signore, andrà presto in rovina la tua casa.
5 As the test of what the potter molds is in the furnace, so in his conversation is the test of a man.	5 Come agitando il vaglio vi restano i rifiuti, così l'ansietà dell'uomo nel suo pensiero.
6 The fruit of a tree shows the care it has had; so too does a man's speech disclose the bent of his mind.	6 La fornace prova i vasi di terra, la tentazione della tribolazione prova i giusti.
7 Praise no man before he speaks, for it is then that men are tested.	7 Come la cultura dell'albero ne mostra il frutto, così la parola, che procede dal pensiero del cuore dell'uomo.
8 If you strive after justice you will attain it, and put it on like a splendid robe.	8 Non lodare l'uomo avanti che egli abbia parlato: questa infatti è la prova degli uomini.
9 Birds nest with their own kind, and fidelity comes to those who live by it.	9 Se segui la giustizia, la raggiungerai, e te ne rivestirai come di gloriosa veste talare, abiterai con lei, che ti proteggerà in eterno, e nel giorno del giudizio troverai un sostegno.
10 As a lion crouches in wait for prey, so do sins for evildoers.	10 I volatili si uniscono ai loro simili, e la verità torna a quelli che la praticano.
11 Ever wise are the discourses of the devout, but the godless man, like the moon, is inconstant.	11 Il leone tende sempre insidie alla preda, così il peccato tende insidie a chi fa il male.
12 Limit the time you spend among fools, but frequent the company of thoughtful men.	12 L'uomo santo è stabile nella sapienza come il sole, invece lo stolto cambia come la luna.
13 The conversation of the wicked is offensive, their laughter is wanton guilt.	13 In mezzo agli stolti serba ad altro tempo le parole, stai di continuo in mezzo ai pensatori.
14 Their oath-filled talk makes the hair stand on end, their brawls make one stop one's ears.	14 Il parlare degli sciocchi fa schifo, perchè ridono nella gioia del peccato.
15 Wrangling among the haughty ends in bloodshed, their cursing is painful to hear.	15 Il linguaggio pieno di giuramenti fa rizzare i capelli, la sua irriverenza fa turare le orecchie.
16 He who betrays a secret cannot be trusted, he will never find an intimate friend.	16 Nella rissa dei superbi c'è spargimento di sangue, e le loro maledizioni fan pena a sentirle.
17 Cherish your friend, keep faith with him; but if you betray his confidence, follow him not;	17 Chi svela i segreti dell'amico ne perde la confidenza, e non troverà un amico secondo il suo cuore.
18 For as an enemy might kill a man, you have killed your neighbor's friendship.	18 Ama l'amico, e stai a lui unito nella fedeltà;
19 Like a bird released from the hand, you have let your friend go and cannot recapture him;	19 ma se tu ne avrai svelati i segreti, non gli correr dietro.
20 Follow him not, for he is far away, he has fled like a gazelle from the trap.	20 Come l'uomo che ha rovinato l'amico, così chi perde l'amicizia del suo prossimo.
21 A wound can be bound up, and an insult forgiven, but he who betrays secrets does hopeless damage.	21 E come chi si lascia scappare di mano un uccello, così, se hai lasciato andare il tuo amico, non lo ripiglierai.
22 He who has shifty eyes plots mischief and no one can ward him off;	22 Non gli tener dietro, perchè è lontano, è già fuggito come gazzella al laccio, perchè ha ferita l'anima.
23 In your presence he uses honeyed talk, and admires your every word, But later he changes his tone and twists your words to your ruin.	23 Non potrai più riunirlo (a te). Anche dopo le ingiurie c'è la riconciliazione,
24 There is nothing that I hate so much, and the LORD hates him as well.	24 ma lo scoprire i segreti dell'amico è la disperazione dell'anima disgraziata.
25 As a stone falls back on him who throws it up, so a blow struck in treachery injures more than one.	25 Chi ammicca cogli occhi ordisce cose inique, e nessuno lo allontanerà.
26 As he who digs a pit falls into it, and he who lays a snare is caught in it,	26 In faccia a te avrà bocca di miele, e ammirerà i tuoi discorsi; ma alla fine cambierà linguaggio, e nelle tue parole ti metterà la pietra d'inciampo.
27 Whoever does harm will be involved in it without knowing how it came upon him.	27 Molte cose ho in odio, ma non come lui, ed anche il Signore l'odierà.
28 Mockery and abuse will be the lot of the proud, and vengeance lies in wait for them like a lion.	28 Se uno setta una pietra per aria, gli cadrà sulla testa; il colpo a tradimento aprirà piaghe nel traditore;
29 The trap seizes those who rejoice in pitfalls, and pain will consume them before they die;	29 chi scava la fossa vi cadrà dentro; chi mette una pietra davanti al suo prossimo v'inciamperà; chi tende il laccio a un altro vi perirà;
30 Wrath and anger are hateful things, yet the sinner hugs them tight.	30 chi ordisce perverso disegno se lo vedrà ricadere addosso, e non saprà da che parte venga.
	31 Gli scherni e gl'improperi son dei superbi, e la vendetta tenderà loro insidie come leone.
	32 Periranno nel laccio quelli che si rallegraron della caduta dei giusti; ma il dolore li consumerà prima che muoiano.
	33 L'ira e il furore son tutt'e due esecrabili, e il peccatore li avrà dentro.
