Proverbs 23

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 When you sit down to dine with a ruler, keep in mind who is before you;	1 Si te sientas a la mesa con un señor, fíjate bien en lo que tienes delante;
2 And put a knife to your throat if you have a ravenous appetite.	2 clava un cuchillo en tu garganta, si tienes mucho apetito.
3 Do not desire his delicacies; they are deceitful food.	3 No ambiciones sus manjares, porque son un alimento engañoso.
4 Toil not to gain wealth, cease to be concerned about it;	4 No te afanes por enriquecerte, deja de pensar en eso.
5 While your glance flits to it, it is gone! for assuredly it grows wings, like the eagle that flies toward heaven.	5 Tus ojos vuelan hacia la riqueza, y ya no hay nada, porque ella se pone alas y vuela hacia el cielo como un águila.
6 Do not take food with a grudging man, and do not desire his dainties;	6 No comas el pan del hombre malicioso ni codicies sus manjares,
7 For in his greed he is like a storm. "Eat and drink," he says to you, though his heart is not with you;	7 porque él es en realidad como piensa dentro de sí: «Come y bebe», te dice, pero su corazón no está contigo.
8 The little you have eaten you will vomit up, and you will have wasted your agreeable words.	8 El bocado que comiste, lo vomitarás, y habrás desperdiciado tus lindas palabras.
9 Speak not for the fool's hearing; he will despise the wisdom of your words.	9 No hables a los oídos de un insensato, porque despreciará el buen sentido de tus palabras.
10 Remove not the ancient landmark, nor invade the fields of orphans;	10 No desplaces los linderos antiguos, ni te metas en los campos de los huérfanos,
11 For their redeemer is strong; he will defend their cause against you.	11 porque su Vengador es poderoso y defenderá su causa contra ti.
12 Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to words of knowledge.	12 Abre tu corazón a la instrucción y tus oídos a las palabras de la ciencia.
13 Withhold not chastisement from a boy; if you beat him with the rod, he will not die.	13 No mezquines la corrección a un niño: si lo golpeas con la vara, no morirá.
14 Beat him with the rod, and you will save him from the nether world.	14 Tú lo golpearás con la vara, y librarás su vida del Abismo.
15 My son, if your heart be wise, my own heart also will rejoice;	15 Hijo mío, si tu corazón es sabio, también se alegrará mi corazón:
16 And my inmost being will exult, when your lips speak what is right.	16 mis entrañas se regocijarán, cuando tus labios hablen con rectitud.
17 Let not your heart emulate sinners, but be zealous for the fear of the LORD always;	17 Que tu corazón no envidie a los pecadores, sino que siempre tema al Señor.
18 For you will surely have a future, and your hope will not be cut off.	18 Así, ciertamente, tendrás un porvenir y tu esperanza no quedará defraudada.
19 Hear, my son, and be wise, and guide your heart in the right way.	19 Escucha, hijo mío, y te harás sabio, y enderezarás tu corazón por el buen camino.
20 Consort not with winebibbers, nor with those who eat meat to excess;	20 No te juntes con los borrachos ni con los que se hartan de carne,
21 For the drunkard and the glutton come to poverty, and torpor clothes a man in rags.	21 porque el borracho y el glotón se empobrecen, y la modorra hace andar vestido con harapos.
22 Listen to your father who begot you, and despise not your mother when she is old.	22 Escucha a tu padre, que te engendró, y no desprecies a tu madre cuando sea vieja.
23 Get the truth, and sell it not-- wisdom, instruction and understanding.	23 Adquiere la verdad y no la vendas, lo mismo que la sabiduría, la instrucción y la inteligencia.
24 The father of a just man will exult with glee; he who begets a wise son will have joy in him.	24 El padre de un justo se llena de gozo, el que tiene un hijo sabio se alegra por él:
25 Let your father and mother have joy; let her who bore you exult.	25 ¡que se alegren tu padre y tu madre y se llene de gozo la que te hizo nacer!
26 My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes keep to my ways.	26 Hijo mío, préstame atención y acepta de buena gana mis caminos.
27 For the harlot is a deep ditch, and the adulteress a narrow pit;	27 Porque la prostituta es una fosa profunda y la mujer extraña, un pozo estrecho:
28 Yes, she lies in wait like a robber, and increases the faithless among men.	28 también ella está al acecho como un ladrón y multiplica las traiciones entre los hombres.
29 Who scream? Who shriek? Who have strife? Who have anxiety? Who have wounds for nothing? Who have black eyes?	29 ¿Para quién los lamentos? ¿Para quién los quejidos? ¿Para quién las querellas? ¿Para quién los suspiros? ¿Para quién las heridas sin motivo? ¿Para quién la mirada turbia?
30 Those who linger long over wine, those who engage in trials of blended wine.	30 Para los que se pasan bebiendo y van en busca de vino aromatizado.
31 Look not on the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the glass. It goes down smoothly;	31 No mires el vino: ¡qué rojo es! ¡Cómo centellea en la copa! ¡Cómo fluye suavemente!
32 but in the end it bites like a serpent, or like a poisonous adder.	32 Pero al fin muerde como una serpiente y pica como una víbora.
33 Your eyes behold strange sights, and your heart utters disordered thoughts;	33 Tus ojos verán cosas extrañas, tu corazón hablará sin ton ni son;
34 You are like one now lying in the depths of the sea, now sprawled at the top of the mast.	34 serás como un hombre acostado en alta mar, acostado en la punta de un mástil.
35 "They struck me, but it pained me not; They beat me, but I felt it not; When shall I awake to seek wine once again?"	35 «Me han golpeado, pero no me dolió; me han pegado, pero no me di cuenta. ¿Cuándo me despertaré? ¡Volveré a pedir más todavía!».
