Proverbs 23

1 When you sit down to dine with a ruler, keep in mind who is before you;	1 Si te sientas a comer con poderoso, mira bien al que está frente a ti;
2 And put a knife to your throat if you have a ravenous appetite.	2 pon un cuchillo a tu garganta si eres hombre de apetito;
3 Do not desire his delicacies; they are deceitful food.	3 no desees sus manjares, porque es alimento engañoso.
4 Toil not to gain wealth, cease to be concerned about it;	4 No te fatigues por eniquecerte, deja de pensar en ello.
5 While your glance flits to it, it is gone! for assuredly it grows wings, like the eagle that flies toward heaven.	5 Pones tus ojos en ello y no hay nada. Porque se hace alas como águila, y se vuela hasta el cielo.
6 Do not take food with a grudging man, and do not desire his dainties;	6 No comas pan con hombre de malas intenciones, ni desees sus manjares.
7 For in his greed he is like a storm. "Eat and drink," he says to you, though his heart is not with you;	7 Porque, según lo que calcula en su interior, te dice: «¡Come y bebe!», pero su corazón no está contigo.
8 The little you have eaten you will vomit up, and you will have wasted your agreeable words.	8 Nada más comer lo vomitarías y tus palabras amables serían tu ruina.
9 Speak not for the fool's hearing; he will despise the wisdom of your words.	9 A oídos de necio no hables, porque se burlará de la prudencia de tus dichos.
10 Remove not the ancient landmark, nor invade the fields of orphans;	10 No desplaces el lindero antiguo, no entres en el campo de los huérfanos,
11 For their redeemer is strong; he will defend their cause against you.	11 porque su vengador es poderoso, y defendería su pleito contra ti.
12 Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to words of knowledge.	12 Aplica tu corazón a la instrucción, y tus oídos a las palabras de la ciencia.
13 Withhold not chastisement from a boy; if you beat him with the rod, he will not die.	13 No ahorres corrección al niño, que no se va a morir porque le castigues con la vara.
14 Beat him with the rod, and you will save him from the nether world.	14 Con la vara le castigarás y librarás su alma del seol.
15 My son, if your heart be wise, my own heart also will rejoice;	15 Hijo mío, si tu corazón es sabio, se alegrará también mi corazón,
16 And my inmost being will exult, when your lips speak what is right.	16 y exultarán mis riñones al decir tus labios cosas rectas.
17 Let not your heart emulate sinners, but be zealous for the fear of the LORD always;	17 No envidie tu corazón a los pecadores, más bien en el temor de Yahveh permanezca todo el día,
18 For you will surely have a future, and your hope will not be cut off.	18 porque hay un mañana, y tu esperanza no será aniquilada.
19 Hear, my son, and be wise, and guide your heart in the right way.	19 Escucha, hijo, y serás sabio, y endereza tu corazón por el camino...
20 Consort not with winebibbers, nor with those who eat meat to excess;	20 No seas de los que se emborrachan de vino, ni de los que se ahítan de carne,
21 For the drunkard and the glutton come to poverty, and torpor clothes a man in rags.	21 porque borracho y glotón se empobrecen y el sopor se viste de harapos.
22 Listen to your father who begot you, and despise not your mother when she is old.	22 Escucha a tu padre, que él te engendró, y no desprecies a tu madre por ser vieja.
23 Get the truth, and sell it not-- wisdom, instruction and understanding.	23 Adquiere la verdad y no la vendas: la sabiduría, la instrucción, la inteligencia.
24 The father of a just man will exult with glee; he who begets a wise son will have joy in him.	24 El padre del justo rebosa de gozo, quien engendra un sabio por él se regocija.
25 Let your father and mother have joy; let her who bore you exult.	25 Se alegrarán tu padre y tu madre, y gozará la que te ha engendrado.
26 My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes keep to my ways.	26 Dame, hijo mío, tu corazón, y que tus ojos hallen deleite en mis caminos.
27 For the harlot is a deep ditch, and the adulteress a narrow pit;	27 Fosa profunda es la prostituta, pozo angosto la mujer extraña.
28 Yes, she lies in wait like a robber, and increases the faithless among men.	28 También ella como ladrón pone emboscadas, y multiplica entre los hombres los traidores.
29 Who scream? Who shriek? Who have strife? Who have anxiety? Who have wounds for nothing? Who have black eyes?	29 ¿Para quién las «Desgracias»? ¿para quién los «Ayes»? ¿para quién los litigios? ¿para quién los lloros? ¿para quién los golpes sin motivo? ¿para quién los ojos turbios?
30 Those who linger long over wine, those who engage in trials of blended wine.	30 Para los que se eternizan con el vino, los que van en busca de vinos mezclados.
31 Look not on the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the glass. It goes down smoothly;	31 No mires el vino: ¡Qué buen color tiene! ¡cómo brinca en la copa! ¡qué bien entra!
32 but in the end it bites like a serpent, or like a poisonous adder.	32 Pero, a la postre, como serpiente muerde, como víbora pica.
33 Your eyes behold strange sights, and your heart utters disordered thoughts;	33 Tus ojos verán cosas extrañas, y tu corazón hablará sin ton ni son.
34 You are like one now lying in the depths of the sea, now sprawled at the top of the mast.	34 Estarás como acostado en el corazón del mar, o acostado en la punta de un mástil.
35 "They struck me, but it pained me not; They beat me, but I felt it not; When shall I awake to seek wine once again?"	35 «Me han golpeado, pero no estoy enfermo; me han tundido a palos, pero no lo he sentido, ¿Cuándo me despertaré...?, me lo seguiré preguntando».
