Psalms 40

1 For the leader. A psalm of David.	1 'Al maestro del coro. Di Davide. Salmo.'
2 I waited, waited for the LORD; who bent down and heard my cry,	2 Ho sperato: ho sperato nel Signore ed egli su di me si è chinato, ha dato ascolto al mio grido.
3 Drew me out of the pit of destruction, out of the mud of the swamp, Set my feet upon rock, steadied my steps,	3 Mi ha tratto dalla fossa della morte, dal fango della palude; i miei piedi ha stabilito sulla roccia, ha reso sicuri i miei passi.
4 And put a new song in my mouth, a hymn to our God. Many shall look on in awe and they shall trust in the LORD.	4 Mi ha messo sulla bocca un canto nuovo, lode al nostro Dio. Molti vedranno e avranno timore e confideranno nel Signore.
5 Happy those whose trust is the LORD, who turn not to idolatry or to those who stray after falsehood.	5 Beato l'uomo che spera nel Signore e non si mette dalla parte dei superbi, né si volge a chi segue la menzogna.
6 How numerous, O LORD, my God, you have made your wondrous deeds! And in your plans for us there is none to equal you. Should I wish to declare or tell them, too many are they to recount.	6 Quanti prodigi tu hai fatto, Signore Dio mio, quali disegni in nostro favore: nessuno a te si può paragonare. Se li voglio annunziare e proclamare sono troppi per essere contati.
7 sacrifice and offering you do not want; but ears open to obedience you gave me. Holocausts and sin-offerings you do not require;	7 Sacrificio e offerta non gradisci, gli orecchi mi hai aperto. Non hai chiesto olocausto e vittima per la colpa.
8 so I said, "Here I am; your commands for me are written in the scroll.	8 Allora ho detto: "Ecco, io vengo. Sul rotolo del libro di me è scritto,
9 To do your will is my delight; my God, your law is in my heart!"	9 che io faccia il tuo volere. Mio Dio, questo io desidero, la tua legge è nel profondo del mio cuore".
10 I announced your deed to a great assembly; I did not restrain my lips; you, LORD, are my witness.	10 Ho annunziato la tua giustizia nella grande assemblea; vedi, non tengo chiuse le labbra, Signore, tu lo sai.
11 Your deed I did not hide within my heart; your loyal deliverance I have proclaimed. I made no secret of your enduring kindness to a great assembly.	11 Non ho nascosto la tua giustizia in fondo al cuore, la tua fedeltà e la tua salvezza ho proclamato. Non ho nascosto la tua grazia e la tua fedeltà alla grande assemblea.
12 LORD, do not withhold your compassion from me; may your enduring kindness ever preserve me.	12 Non rifiutarmi, Signore, la tua misericordia, la tua fedeltà e la tua grazia mi proteggano sempre,
13 For all about me are evils beyond count; my sins so overcome me I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head; my courage fails me.	13 poiché mi circondano mali senza numero, le mie colpe mi opprimono e non posso più vedere. Sono più dei capelli del mio capo, il mio cuore viene meno.
14 LORD, graciously rescue me! Come quickly to help me, LORD!	14 Degnati, Signore, di liberarmi; accorri, Signore, in mio aiuto.
15 Put to shame and confound all who seek to take my life. Turn back in disgrace those who desire my ruin.	15 Vergogna e confusione per quanti cercano di togliermi la vita. Retrocedano coperti d'infamia quelli che godono della mia sventura.
16 Let those who say "Aha!" know dismay and shame.	16 Siano presi da tremore e da vergogna quelli che mi scherniscono.
17 But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you. May those who long for your help always say, "The LORD be glorified."	17 Esultino e gioiscano in te quanti ti cercano, dicano sempre: "Il Signore è grande" quelli che bramano la tua salvezza.
18 Though I am afflicted and poor, the Lord keeps me in mind. You are my help and deliverer; my God, do not delay!	18 Io sono povero e infelice; di me ha cura il Signore. Tu, mio aiuto e mia liberazione, mio Dio, non tardare.
