For the leader, for Jeduthun. A psalm of David. | 1 Magistro chori, Idithun. Psalmus. David. |
I said, "I will watch my ways, lest I sin with my tongue; I will set a curb on my mouth." | 2 Dixi: “ Custodiam vias meas, ut non delinquam in lingua mea; ponam ori meo custodiam, donec consistit peccator adversum me ”. |
Dumb and silent before the wicked, I refrained from any speech. But my sorrow increased; | 3 Tacens obmutui et silui absque ullo bono, et dolor meus renovatus est. |
my heart smoldered within me. In my thoughts a fire blazed up, and I broke into speech: | 4 Concaluit cor meum intra me, et in meditatione mea exarsit ignis. |
LORD, let me know my end, the number of my days, that I may learn how frail I am. | 5 Locutus sum in lingua mea: “ Notum fac mihi, Domine, finem meum; et numerum dierum meorum quis est, ut sciam quam brevis sit vita mea ”. |
You have given my days a very short span; my life is as nothing before you. All mortals are but a breath. Selah | 6 Ecce paucorum palmorum fecisti dies meos, et spatium vitae meae tamquam nihilum ante te. Etenim universa vanitas omnis homo constitutus est. |
Mere phantoms, we go our way; mere vapor, our restless pursuits; we heap up stores without knowing for whom. | 7 Etenim ut imago pertransit homo. Etenim vanitas est et concitatur; thesaurizat et ignorat quis congregabit ea. |
And now, Lord, what future do I have? You are my only hope. | 8 Et nunc quae est exspectatio mea, Domine? Spes mea apud te est. |
From all my sins deliver me; let me not be the taunt of fools. | 9 Ab omnibus iniquitatibus meis erue me, opprobrium insipienti ne ponas me. |
I was silent and did not open my mouth because you were the one who did this. | 10 Obmutui et non aperiam os meum, quoniam tu fecisti. |
Take your plague away from me; I am ravaged by the touch of your hand. | 11 Amove a me plagas tuas: ab ictu manus tuae ego defeci. |
You rebuke our guilt and chasten us; you dissolve all we prize like a cobweb. All mortals are but a breath. Selah | 12 In increpationibus, propter iniquitatem, corripuisti hominem, et tabescere fecisti, sicut tinea, desiderabilia eius. Etenim vanitas omnis homo. |
Listen to my prayer, LORD, hear my cry; do not be deaf to my weeping! I sojourn with you like a passing stranger, a guest, like all my ancestors. | 13 Exaudi orationem meam, Domine, et clamorem meum auribus percipe. Ad lacrimas meas ne obsurdescas, quoniam advena ego sum apud te, peregrinus sicut omnes patres mei. |
Turn your gaze from me, that I may find peace before I depart to be no more. | 14 Avertere a me, ut refrigerer, priusquam abeam et non sim amplius. |
