1 Then spoke Eliphaz the Temanite, who said:	1 Da antwortete Eliphas, der Temanit, und sprach:
2 If someone attempts a word with you, will you mind? For how can anyone refrain from speaking?	2 "Wenn man ein Wort an dich versucht, nimmst du es wohl übel? Doch wer vermag das Reden aufzuhalten?
3 Behold, you have instructed many, and have made firm their feeble hands.	3 Siehe, du hast viele unterwiesen und schlaffe Hände stark gemacht;
4 Your words have upheld the stumbler; you have strengthened his faltering knees.	4 dem Strauchelnden halfen deine Worte auf, und wankenden Knien gabst du Kraft.
5 But now that it comes to you, you are impatient; when it touches yourself, you are dismayed.	5 Weil es nun an dich herankam, wurdest du verdrossen, weil es dich selber traf, warst du entsetzt.
6 Is not your piety a source of confidence, and your integrity of life your hope?	6 Ist deine Gottesfurcht nicht deine Zuversicht? Ist nicht dein frommer Wandel deine Hoffnung?
7 Reflect now, what innocent person perishes? Since when are the upright destroyed?	7 Bedenke doch, wer ging je schuldlos unter, und wo sind Redliche vernichtet worden?
8 As I see it, those who plow for mischief and sow trouble, reap the same.	8 Soviel ich sah, mußte, wer Bosheit pflügte und wer Unheil säte, dies auch ernten.
9 By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his wrath they are consumed.	9 Durch Gottes Odem gingen sie zugrunde und schwanden hin durch seines Zornes Hauch.
10 Though the lion roars, though the king of beasts cries out, yet the teeth of the young lions are broken;	10 Des Löwen Gebrüll, des Leuen Geheul, des Junglöwen Zähne werden zerschlagen.
11 The old lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.	11 Der Löwe geht ein aus Mangel an Raub, und die Jungen der Löwin zerstreuen sich.
12 For a word was stealthily brought to me, and my ear caught a whisper of it.	12 Zu mir hat sich ein Wort gestohlen, und ein Flüstern davon empfing mein Ohr,
13 In my thoughts during visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men,	13 in Grübeleien, verursacht durch Nachtgesichte, wenn tiefer Schlaf die Menschen befällt.
14 Fear came upon me, and shuddering, that terrified me to the bones.	14 Schrecken kam über mich und Zittern, Beben erschütterte meine Glieder.
15 Then a spirit passed before me, and the hair of my flesh stood up.	15 Ein Geist schwebte an meinem Antlitz vorüber, es sträubte sich jedes Haar meines Leibes.
16 It paused, but its likeness I could not discern; a figure was before my eyes, and I heard a still voice:	16 Er blieb stehen, doch ich konnte sein Aussehen nicht erkennen, eine Gestalt war vor meinen Augen, ich hörte das Flüstern einer Stimme:
17 "Can a man be righteous as against God? Can a mortal be blameless against his Maker?	17 "Ist wohl ein Mensch gerechter als Gott, oder ist jemand reiner als sein Schöpfer?
18 Lo, he puts no trust in his servants, and with his angels he can find fault.	18 Sieh, selbst seinen Dienern vertraut er nicht, und an seinen Engeln stellt er Mängel fest!
19 How much more with those that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed more easily than the moth!	19 Gar erst an den Bewohnern von Lehmgehäusen, deren Bestand auf Staub sich gründet! Sie werden schneller zermalmt als eine Motte.
20 Morning or evening they may be shattered; with no heed paid to it, they perish forever.	20 Zwischen Morgen und Abend werden sie zerschlagen; ohne daß es jemand beachtet, gehen sie für immer zugrunde.
21 The pegs of their tent are plucked up; they die without knowing wisdom."	21 Wird nicht an ihnen ausgerissen ihr Zeltstrick, daß sie sterben, ohne es zu merken?"
