1 Then spoke Eliphaz the Temanite, who said:	1 - Prese allora a parlare Elifaz il Temanita e disse:
2 If someone attempts a word with you, will you mind? For how can anyone refrain from speaking?	2 «Se ti rivolgessimo la parola, ne saresti turbato? Eppur chi potrebbe trattenere un discorso spontaneo?
3 Behold, you have instructed many, and have made firm their feeble hands.	3 Ecco, tu hai dato ammonizione a molti, e mani fiaccate hai rafforzate:
4 Your words have upheld the stumbler; you have strengthened his faltering knees.	4 i tuoi discorsi sostennero i vacillanti, e le ginocchia tremanti tu hai raffermate;
5 But now that it comes to you, you are impatient; when it touches yourself, you are dismayed.	5 ma adesso che il flagello ti ha raggiunto, vieni meno, ti ha toccato e sei sbigottito.
6 Is not your piety a source of confidence, and your integrity of life your hope?	6 Ov'è dunque la tua religiosità, la tua fortezza, la tua pazienza e la perfezione della tua condotta?
7 Reflect now, what innocent person perishes? Since when are the upright destroyed?	7 Ricordati, ti prego, chi mai fu innocente e perì? o quando mai i retti furono distrutti?
8 As I see it, those who plow for mischief and sow trouble, reap the same.	8 Al contrario, io ho visto che quei che arano l'iniquitàe seminano i delitti, li mietono pure;
9 By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his wrath they are consumed.	9 pel soffio di Dio essi periscono, dall'alito dell'ira sua sono distrutti.
10 Though the lion roars, though the king of beasts cries out, yet the teeth of the young lions are broken;	10 Il ruggito del leone e la voce della leonessa [cessò], e i denti dei leoncelli furono spezzati;
11 The old lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.	11 la tigre venne meno per mancanza di preda, e i nati del leone finirono dispersi.
12 For a word was stealthily brought to me, and my ear caught a whisper of it.	12 Invero, un'arcana parola a me fu rivolta, e furtivamente percepì il mio orecchio il suo sussurro;
13 In my thoughts during visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men,	13 nel segreto di visione notturna, quando un sopore suole incombere sugli uomini,
14 Fear came upon me, and shuddering, that terrified me to the bones.	14 uno spavento m'incolse ed un tremito, e tutte l'ossa mie ne furono scosse;
15 Then a spirit passed before me, and the hair of my flesh stood up.	15 e, passando innanzi a me un alito, inorridirono i peli della mia carne,
16 It paused, but its likeness I could not discern; a figure was before my eyes, and I heard a still voice:	16 ristetteuno che non conobbi al sembiante, un'immagine mi fu davanti agli occhied una voce quasi di bisbiglio udii:
17 "Can a man be righteous as against God? Can a mortal be blameless against his Maker?	17 - Può forse l'uomo esser giusto in confronto con Dio, e più del suo Fattore sarà puro il mortale?
18 Lo, he puts no trust in his servants, and with his angels he can find fault.	18 Ecco, quei che lo servono non sono stimati [puri], e negli angeli suoi trova manchevolezza:
19 How much more with those that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed more easily than the moth!	19 quanto più quei che abitano case di creta, quei che hanno per fondamento la polvere, saranno consunti come da tignuola?
20 Morning or evening they may be shattered; with no heed paid to it, they perish forever.	20 Fra mattina e sera saranno stroncati; e poichè nessuno riflette periranno in eterno.
21 The pegs of their tent are plucked up; they die without knowing wisdom."	21 Verrà in essi strappata la fune della loro [esistenza], e moriranno, ma senza sapienza.
