1 Then spoke Eliphaz the Temanite, who said:	1 ED Elifaz Temanita rispose, e disse:
2 If someone attempts a word with you, will you mind? For how can anyone refrain from speaking?	2 Se noi imprendiamo a parlarti, ti sarà egli molesto? Ma pur chi potrebbe rattener le parole?
3 Behold, you have instructed many, and have made firm their feeble hands.	3 Ecco, tu correggevi molti, E rinforzavi le mani rimesse.
4 Your words have upheld the stumbler; you have strengthened his faltering knees.	4 I tuoi ragionamenti ridirizzavano quelli che vacillavano, E tu raffermavi le ginocchia che piegavano.
5 But now that it comes to you, you are impatient; when it touches yourself, you are dismayed.	5 Ma ora che il male ti è avvenuto, tu te ne affanni; Ora ch’è giunto fino a te, tu ne sei smarrito.
6 Is not your piety a source of confidence, and your integrity of life your hope?	6 La tua pietà non è ella stata la tua speranza, E l’integrità delle tue vie la tua aspettazione?
7 Reflect now, what innocent person perishes? Since when are the upright destroyed?	7 Deh! rammemorati, quale innocente perì mai, Ed ove furono gli uomini diritti mai distrutti?
8 As I see it, those who plow for mischief and sow trouble, reap the same.	8 Siccome io ho veduto che quelli che arano l’iniquità, E seminano la perversità, la mietono.
9 By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his wrath they are consumed.	9 Essi periscono per l’alito di Dio, E son consumati dal soffiar delle sue nari.
10 Though the lion roars, though the king of beasts cries out, yet the teeth of the young lions are broken;	10 Il ruggito del leone, e il grido del fier leone son ribattuti; E i denti de’ leoncelli sono stritolati.
11 The old lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.	11 Il vecchio leone perisce per mancamento di preda, E i figli della leonessa son dissipati
12 For a word was stealthily brought to me, and my ear caught a whisper of it.	12 Or mi è stata di nascosto significata una parola, E l’orecchio mio ne ha ritenuto un poco.
13 In my thoughts during visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men,	13 Fra le immaginazioni delle visioni notturne, Quando il più profondo sonno cade sopra gli uomini,
14 Fear came upon me, and shuddering, that terrified me to the bones.	14 Mi è venuto uno spavento ed un tremito, Che ha spaventate tutte quante le mie ossa.
15 Then a spirit passed before me, and the hair of my flesh stood up.	15 Ed uno spirito è passato davanti a me, Che mi ha fatto arricciare i peli della mia carne;
16 It paused, but its likeness I could not discern; a figure was before my eyes, and I heard a still voice:	16 Egli si è fermato, ed io non ho riconosciuto il suo aspetto; Una sembianza è stata davanti agli occhi miei, Ed io ho udita una voce sommessa che diceva:
17 "Can a man be righteous as against God? Can a mortal be blameless against his Maker?	17 L’uomo sarebbe egli giustificato da Dio? L’uomo sarebbe egli giudicato puro dal suo fattore?
18 Lo, he puts no trust in his servants, and with his angels he can find fault.	18 Ecco, egli non si fida ne’ suoi servitori, E scorge della temerità ne’ suoi Angeli.
19 How much more with those that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed more easily than the moth!	19 Quanto più in coloro che abitano in case di fango, Il cui fondamento è nella polvere, E che son ridotti in polvere, esposti a’ vermi?
20 Morning or evening they may be shattered; with no heed paid to it, they perish forever.	20 Dalla mattina alla sera sono stritolati, E periscono in perpetuo, senza che alcuno vi ponga mente.
21 The pegs of their tent are plucked up; they die without knowing wisdom."	21 L’eccellenza ch’era in loro non si diparte ella? Muoiono, ma non con sapienza
