1 Then spoke Eliphaz the Temanite, who said:	1 Elifaz de Temã tomou a palavra nestes termos:
2 If someone attempts a word with you, will you mind? For how can anyone refrain from speaking?	2 “Se arriscarmos uma palavra, talvez ficarás aflito, mas quem poderá impedir-me de falar?
3 Behold, you have instructed many, and have made firm their feeble hands.	3 A muitos ensinaste, deste força a mãos frágeis.
4 Your words have upheld the stumbler; you have strengthened his faltering knees.	4 Tuas palavras levantavam aqueles que caíam, fortificaste os joelhos vacilantes.
5 But now that it comes to you, you are impatient; when it touches yourself, you are dismayed.	5 Agora que é a tua vez, enfraqueces; quando és atingido, te perturbas.
6 Is not your piety a source of confidence, and your integrity of life your hope?	6 Não estava a tua confiança na tua piedade, e a tua esperança na integridade de tua conduta?
7 Reflect now, what innocent person perishes? Since when are the upright destroyed?	7 Lembra-te: Qual o inocente que pereceu? Ou quando foram destruídos os justos?
8 As I see it, those who plow for mischief and sow trouble, reap the same.	8 Tanto quanto eu saiba, os que praticam a iniquidade e os que semeiam sofrimento também os colhem.
9 By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his wrath they are consumed.	9 Ao sopro de Deus eles perecem e são aniquilados pelo vento de seu furor.
10 Though the lion roars, though the king of beasts cries out, yet the teeth of the young lions are broken;	10 Urra o leão e seu rugido é abafado, os dentes dos leõezinhos são quebrados.
11 The old lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.	11 A fera morre porque não tinha presa e os filhotes da leoa se dispersam.
12 For a word was stealthily brought to me, and my ear caught a whisper of it.	12 Uma palavra chegou a mim furtivamente, e meu ouvido percebeu o murmúrio.
13 In my thoughts during visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men,	13 Na confusão das visões da noite e na hora em que o sono se apodera das pessoas.
14 Fear came upon me, and shuddering, that terrified me to the bones.	14 Surpreenderam-me o medo e o terror e sacudiram todos os meus ossos.
15 Then a spirit passed before me, and the hair of my flesh stood up.	15 Um sopro perpassou meu rosto e fez arrepiar o pêlo do meu corpo.
16 It paused, but its likeness I could not discern; a figure was before my eyes, and I heard a still voice:	16 Lá estava um ser – não lhe vi o rosto – como um espectro sob meus olhos.
17 "Can a man be righteous as against God? Can a mortal be blameless against his Maker?	17 Ouvi uma frágil voz: ‘Pode o homem ser justo na presença de Deus, pode o mortal ser puro diante do seu Criador?
18 Lo, he puts no trust in his servants, and with his angels he can find fault.	18 Ele não confia nem nos seus próprios servos; até mesmo nos seus anjos encontra defeito,
19 How much more with those that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed more easily than the moth!	19 quanto mais nos seus hóspedes em casas de barro, que têm o pó por fundamento! São esmagados como a traça.
20 Morning or evening they may be shattered; with no heed paid to it, they perish forever.	20 Entre a manhã e a tarde são aniquilados; sem que neles se preste atenção, morrem para sempre.
21 The pegs of their tent are plucked up; they die without knowing wisdom."	21 Não foi arrancada a estaca da tenda deles? Morrem sem terem conhecido a sabedoria’.”
