1 Then Job said in reply:	1 Allora Giobbe, presa la parola, disse;
2 At least listen to my words, and let that be the consolation you offer.	2 « Ascoltate, ve ne prego, le mie parole, e mutate sentimenti.
3 Bear with me while I speak; and after I have spoken, you can mock!	3 Permettetemi di parlare, e quando avrò detto, se vi parrà, ridete pure delle mie parole.
4 Is my complaint toward man? And why should I not be impatient?	4 E' forse contro un uomo la mia disputa, chè io non abbia ragione di rattristarmi?
5 Look at me and be astonished, put your hands over your mouths.	5 Guardatemi, e, allibiti, ponete il dito alla vostra bocca.
6 When I think of it, I am dismayed, and horror takes hold on my flesh.	6 Io al sol pensarci son preso dallo spavento, un tremito agita la mia carne.
7 Why do the wicked survive, grow old, become mighty in power?	7 Come mai vivono gli empi, e sono innalzati e resi potenti dalle ricchezze?
8 Their progeny is secure in their sight; they see before them their kinsfolk and their offspring.	8 Una prospera progenie li circonda, una turba di parenti e di nipoti sta alla loro presenza.
9 Their homes are safe and without fear, nor is the scourge of God upon them.	9 Le loro case son tranquille e al sicuro, e la verga di Dio non li tocca.
10 Their bulls gender without fail; their cows calve and do not miscarry.	10 I loro bovi fan concepire senza aborti, le loro vacche mettono alla luce e non va loro a male un parto.
11 These folk have infants numerous as lambs, and their children dance.	11 I loro fanciulli escon fuori come greggi, i loro ragazzi saltano e si divertono.
12 They sing to the timbrel and harp, and make merry to the sound of the flute.	12 Portano in mano il tamburo e la cetra, si rallegrano al suon degli strumenti.
13 They live out their days in prosperity, and tranquilly go down to the nether world.	13 passano nella felicità i loro giorni, e in un momento scendono nel sepolcro.
14 Yet they say to God, "Depart from us, for we have no wish to learn your ways!	14 Essi, che dissero a Dio: Allontanati da noi: non vogliamo saperne delle tue vie.
15 What is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what gain shall we have if we pray to him?"	15 Chi è l'Onnipotente che dobbiamo servirlo? Che guadagneremo a pregarlo?
16 If their happiness is not in their own hands and if the counsel of the wicked is repulsive to God,	16 Ma siccome i loro beni non sono in loro mano, lungi da me il consiglio degli empi.
17 How often is the lamp of the wicked put out? How often does destruction come upon them, the portion he allots in his anger?	17 Quante volte si spegnerà la lucerna degli empi, e piomberà sopra di essi la rovina, e (Dio) nell'ira sua distribuirà loro i dolori?
18 Let them be like straw before the wind, and like chaff which the storm snatches away!	18 Saran come paglia al vento, come cenere che il turbine disperde.
19 May God not store up the man's misery for his children; let him requite the man himself so that he feels it,	19 Dio serberà ai figli i castighi del padre. Invece egli dovrebbe imparare dal castigo,
20 Let his own eyes see the calamity, and the wrath of the Almighty let him drink!	20 Ì suoi occhi dovrebbero veder la sua rovina, egli dovrebbe bere il furore dell'Ònnipotente.
21 For what interest has he in his family after him, when the number of his months is finished?	21 Che gl'importa infatti della sua casa dopo di lui, quand'anche il numero dei suoi mesi fosse dimezzato?
22 Can anyone teach God knowledge, seeing that he judges those on high?	22 Chi pretenderà d'insegnare la scienza a Dio, il quale giudica i celesti?
23 One dies in his full vigor, wholly at ease and content;	23 Uno muore robusto e sano, e ricco e felice;
24 His figure is full and nourished, and his bones are rich in marrow.	24 le sue viscere son piene di grasso, le sue ossa sono irrigate di midollo.
25 Another dies in bitterness of soul, having never tasted happiness.	25 Un'altro invece muore coll'amarezza nell'anima, senza beni di fortuna.
26 Alike they lie down in the dust, and worms cover them both.	26 Eppure giaceranno ugualmente nella polvere, e i vermi li copriranno.
27 Behold, I know your thoughts, and the arguments you rehearse against me.	27 Io però conosco bene i vostri pensieri, i giudizi iniqui che mi opponete,
28 For you say, "Where is the house of the magnate, and where the dwelling place of the wicked?"	28 infatti voi dite: Dov'è la casa del principe? Dove sono le tende degli empi?
29 Have you not asked the wayfarers and do you not recognize their monuments?	29 Domandatene a chiunque volete dei viaggiatori, e sentirete che egli sa bene queste cose:
30 Nay, the evil man is spared calamity when it comes;	30 che l'empio è riservato pel giorno della vendetta, e sarà condotto al giorno del furore.
31 Who will charge him with his conduct to his face, and for what he has done who will repay him?	31 Chi gli rimprovererà in faccia il suo modo di agire? Chi gli renderà quanto si merita?
32 and on the day he is carried to the grave	32 Egli sarà condotto al sepolcro, e veglierà, tra la turba dei morti:
33 Sweet to him are the clods of the valley, and over him the funeral mound keeps watch, While all the line of mankind follows him, and the countless others who have gone before.	33 gradito alla ghiaia del Cocito, trascinerà dietro a, sè tutti gli uomini e davanti a sè una turba innumerevole.
34 How then can you offer me vain comfort, while in your answers perfidy remains?	34 A che state a darmi vane consolazioni se è chiaro che la vostra risposta, ripugna alla verità? »
