Job 21

1 Then Job said in reply:	1 Job prit la parole et dit:
2 At least listen to my words, and let that be the consolation you offer.	2 Ecoutez, écoutez mes paroles, accordez-moi cette consolation.
3 Bear with me while I speak; and after I have spoken, you can mock!	3 Souffrez que je parle à mon tour; quand j'aurai fini, libre à vous de railler.
4 Is my complaint toward man? And why should I not be impatient?	4 Est-ce que moi je m'en prends à un homme? Est-ce sans raison que je perds patience?
5 Look at me and be astonished, put your hands over your mouths.	5 Prêtez-moi attention: vous serez stupéfaits, et vous mettrez la main sur votre bouche.
6 When I think of it, I am dismayed, and horror takes hold on my flesh.	6 Moi-même, quand j'y songe, je suis épouvanté, ma chair est saisie d'un frisson.
7 Why do the wicked survive, grow old, become mighty in power?	7 Pourquoi les méchants restent-ils en vie, vieillissent-ils et accroissent-ils leur puissance?
8 Their progeny is secure in their sight; they see before them their kinsfolk and their offspring.	8 Leur postérité devant eux s'affermit et leurs rejetons sous leurs yeux subsistent.
9 Their homes are safe and without fear, nor is the scourge of God upon them.	9 La paix de leurs maisons n'a rien à craindre, les rigueurs de Dieu les épargnent.
10 Their bulls gender without fail; their cows calve and do not miscarry.	10 Leur taureau féconde à coup sûr, leur vache met bas sans avorter.
11 These folk have infants numerous as lambs, and their children dance.	11 Ils laissent courir leurs gamins comme des brebis, leurs enfants bondir comme des cerfs.
12 They sing to the timbrel and harp, and make merry to the sound of the flute.	12 Ils chantent avec tambourins et cithares, se réjouissent au son de la flûte.
13 They live out their days in prosperity, and tranquilly go down to the nether world.	13 Leur vie s'achève dans le bonheur, ils descendent en paix au shéol.
14 Yet they say to God, "Depart from us, for we have no wish to learn your ways!	14 Eux, pourtant, disent à Dieu: "Ecarte-toi de nous, connaître tes voies ne nous plaît pas!
15 What is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what gain shall we have if we pray to him?"	15 Qu'est-ce que Shaddaï pour que nous le servions, quel profit pour nous à l'invoquer?"
16 If their happiness is not in their own hands and if the counsel of the wicked is repulsive to God,	16 Ne tiennent-ils pas leur bonheur en main, et Dieu n'est-il pas écarté du conseil des méchants?
17 How often is the lamp of the wicked put out? How often does destruction come upon them, the portion he allots in his anger?	17 Voit-on souvent la lampe du méchant s'éteindre, le malheur fondre sur lui, la colère divine détruireses biens,
18 Let them be like straw before the wind, and like chaff which the storm snatches away!	18 le vent le chasser comme une paille, un tourbillon l'emporter comme la bale?
19 May God not store up the man's misery for his children; let him requite the man himself so that he feels it,	19 Dieu se réserverait de le punir dans ses enfants? Mais qu'il soit donc châtié lui-même et qu'il le sache!
20 Let his own eyes see the calamity, and the wrath of the Almighty let him drink!	20 Que, de ses yeux, il assiste à sa ruine, qu'il s'abreuve à la fureur de Shaddaï!
21 For what interest has he in his family after him, when the number of his months is finished?	21 Que peut lui faire, après lui, le sort de sa maison, quand la série de ses mois sera tranchée?
22 Can anyone teach God knowledge, seeing that he judges those on high?	22 Mais enseigne-t-on à Dieu la science, à Celui qui juge les êtres d'en haut?
23 One dies in his full vigor, wholly at ease and content;	23 Tel encore meurt en pleine vigueur, au comble du bonheur et de la paix,
24 His figure is full and nourished, and his bones are rich in marrow.	24 les flancs chargés de graisse et la moelle de ses os tout humide.
25 Another dies in bitterness of soul, having never tasted happiness.	25 Et tel autre périt l'amertume dans l'âme, sans avoir goûté au bonheur.
26 Alike they lie down in the dust, and worms cover them both.	26 Ensemble, dans la poussière, ils se couchent, et la vermine les recouvre.
27 Behold, I know your thoughts, and the arguments you rehearse against me.	27 Oh! je sais bien quelles sont vos pensées, vos réflexions méchantes sur mon compte.
28 For you say, "Where is the house of the magnate, and where the dwelling place of the wicked?"	28 "Qu'est devenue, dites-vous, la maison du grand seigneur, où est la tente qu'habitaient des méchants?"
29 Have you not asked the wayfarers and do you not recognize their monuments?	29 N'interrogez-vous pas les voyageurs, méconnaissez-vous leurs témoignages?
30 Nay, the evil man is spared calamity when it comes;	30 Au jour du désastre, le méchant est épargné, au jour de la fureur, il est mis à l'abri.
31 Who will charge him with his conduct to his face, and for what he has done who will repay him?	31 Et qui donc lui reproche en face sa conduite, et lui rend ce qu'il a fait?
32 and on the day he is carried to the grave	32 Il est emporté au cimetière, où il veille sur son tertre.
33 Sweet to him are the clods of the valley, and over him the funeral mound keeps watch, While all the line of mankind follows him, and the countless others who have gone before.	33 Les mottes du ravin lui sont douces, et, derrière lui, toute la population défile.
34 How then can you offer me vain comfort, while in your answers perfidy remains?	34 Que signifient donc vos vaines consolations? Et quelle tromperie que vos réponses!
