1 Then Job said in reply:	1 Job respondió, diciendo:
2 At least listen to my words, and let that be the consolation you offer.	2 ¡Oigan, oigan bien mis palabras, concédanme al menos este consuelo!
3 Bear with me while I speak; and after I have spoken, you can mock!	3 Tengan paciencia mientras hablo yo, y una vez que haya hablado, se podrán burlar.
4 Is my complaint toward man? And why should I not be impatient?	4 ¿Acaso yo me quejo de un hombre o no tengo motivo para estar indignado?
5 Look at me and be astonished, put your hands over your mouths.	5 Vuélvanse a mí, y quedarán consternados, se pondrán la mano sobre la boca.
6 When I think of it, I am dismayed, and horror takes hold on my flesh.	6 Cuando me acuerdo, yo mismo me horrorizo y todo mi cuerpo se estremece.
7 Why do the wicked survive, grow old, become mighty in power?	7 ¿Cómo es posible que vivan los malvados, y que aun siendo viejos, se acreciente su fuerza?
8 Their progeny is secure in their sight; they see before them their kinsfolk and their offspring.	8 Su descendencia se afianza ante ellos, sus vástagos crecen delante de sus ojos.
9 Their homes are safe and without fear, nor is the scourge of God upon them.	9 Sus casas están en paz, libres de temor, y no los alcanza la vara de Dios.
10 Their bulls gender without fail; their cows calve and do not miscarry.	10 Su toro fecunda sin fallar nunca, su vaca tiene cría sin abortar jamás.
11 These folk have infants numerous as lambs, and their children dance.	11 Hacen correr a sus niños como ovejas, sus hijos pequeños saltan de alegría.
12 They sing to the timbrel and harp, and make merry to the sound of the flute.	12 Entonan canciones con el tambor y la cítara y se divierten al son de la flauta.
13 They live out their days in prosperity, and tranquilly go down to the nether world.	13 Acaban felizmente sus días y descienden en paz al Abismo.
14 Yet they say to God, "Depart from us, for we have no wish to learn your ways!	14 Y ellos decían a Dios: «¡Apártate de nosotros, no nos importa conocer tus caminos!
15 What is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what gain shall we have if we pray to him?"	15 ¿Qué es el Todopoderoso para que lo sirvamos y qué ganamos con suplicarle?».
16 If their happiness is not in their own hands and if the counsel of the wicked is repulsive to God,	16 ¿No tienen la felicidad en sus manos? ¿No está lejos de Dios el designio de los malvados?
17 How often is the lamp of the wicked put out? How often does destruction come upon them, the portion he allots in his anger?	17 ¿Cuántas veces se extingue su lámpara y la ruina se abate sobre ellos? ¿Cuántas veces en su ira él les da su merecido,
18 Let them be like straw before the wind, and like chaff which the storm snatches away!	18 y ellos son como paja delante del viento, como rastrojo que se lleva el huracán?
19 May God not store up the man's misery for his children; let him requite the man himself so that he feels it,	19 ¿Reservará Dios el castigo para sus hijos? ¡Que lo castigue a él, que él lo sienta!
20 Let his own eyes see the calamity, and the wrath of the Almighty let him drink!	20 ¡Que sus propios ojos vean su fracaso, que beba el furor del Todopoderoso!
21 For what interest has he in his family after him, when the number of his months is finished?	21 ¿Qué le importará de su casa después de él, cuando se haya cortado el número de sus meses?
22 Can anyone teach God knowledge, seeing that he judges those on high?	22 Pero ¿puede enseñarse la sabiduría a Dios, a él, que juzga a los seres más elevados?
23 One dies in his full vigor, wholly at ease and content;	23 Uno muere en la plenitud de su vigor, enteramente feliz y tranquilo,
24 His figure is full and nourished, and his bones are rich in marrow.	24 con sus caderas repletas de grasa y la médula de sus huesos bien jugosa.
25 Another dies in bitterness of soul, having never tasted happiness.	25 Otro muere con el alma amargada, sin haber gustado la felicidad.
26 Alike they lie down in the dust, and worms cover them both.	26 Después, uno y otro yacen juntos en el polvo y los recubren los gusanos.
27 Behold, I know your thoughts, and the arguments you rehearse against me.	27 ¡Sí, yo sé lo que ustedes piensan, los razonamientos que alegan contra mí!
28 For you say, "Where is the house of the magnate, and where the dwelling place of the wicked?"	28 «¿Dónde está, dicen ustedes, la casa del potentado y la carpa en que habitaban los malvados?».
29 Have you not asked the wayfarers and do you not recognize their monuments?	29 Pero ¿no han preguntado a los que pasan por el camino? ¿No han advertido, por las señales que dan,
30 Nay, the evil man is spared calamity when it comes;	30 que el impío es preservado en el día de la ruina y es puesto a salvo en el día del furor?
31 Who will charge him with his conduct to his face, and for what he has done who will repay him?	31 ¿Quién le devuelve el mal que hizo?
32 and on the day he is carried to the grave	32 Es llevado al cementerio, y una lápida monta guardia sobre él.
33 Sweet to him are the clods of the valley, and over him the funeral mound keeps watch, While all the line of mankind follows him, and the countless others who have gone before.	33 Son dulces para él los terrones del valle; todo el mundo desfila detrás de él, y ante él, una multitud innumerable.
34 How then can you offer me vain comfort, while in your answers perfidy remains?	34 ¡Qué inútil es el consuelo que me ofrecen! Sus respuestas son puras falacias.
