1 Then Job said in reply:	1 Job tomó la palabra y dijo:
2 At least listen to my words, and let that be the consolation you offer.	2 Escuchad, escuchad mis razones, dadme siquiera este consuelo.
3 Bear with me while I speak; and after I have spoken, you can mock!	3 Tened paciencia mientras hablo yo, cuando haya hablado, os podréis burlar.
4 Is my complaint toward man? And why should I not be impatient?	4 ¿Acaso me quejo yo de un hombre? ¿Por qué entonces no he de ser impaciente?
5 Look at me and be astonished, put your hands over your mouths.	5 Volved hacia mí: quedaréis espantados y la mano pondréis en vuestra boca.
6 When I think of it, I am dismayed, and horror takes hold on my flesh.	6 Que yo mismo me horrorizo al recordarlo, y mi carne es presa de un escalofrío.
7 Why do the wicked survive, grow old, become mighty in power?	7 ¿Por qué siguen viviendo los malvados, envejecen y aún crecen en poder?
8 Their progeny is secure in their sight; they see before them their kinsfolk and their offspring.	8 Su descendencia ante ellos se afianza, sus vástagos se afirman a su vista.
9 Their homes are safe and without fear, nor is the scourge of God upon them.	9 En paz sus casas, nada temen, la vara de Dios no cae sobre ellos.
10 Their bulls gender without fail; their cows calve and do not miscarry.	10 Su toro fecunda sin marrar, sin abortar su vaca pare.
11 These folk have infants numerous as lambs, and their children dance.	11 Dejan correr a sus niños como ovejas, sus hijos brincan como ciervos.
12 They sing to the timbrel and harp, and make merry to the sound of the flute.	12 Cantan con arpa y cítara, al son de la flauta se divierten.
13 They live out their days in prosperity, and tranquilly go down to the nether world.	13 Acaban su vida en la ventura, en paz descienden al seol.
14 Yet they say to God, "Depart from us, for we have no wish to learn your ways!	14 Y con todo, a Dios decían: «¡Lejos de nosotros, no queremos conocer tus caminos!
15 What is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what gain shall we have if we pray to him?"	15 ¿Qué es Sadday para que le sirvamos, qué podemos ganar con aplacarle?»
16 If their happiness is not in their own hands and if the counsel of the wicked is repulsive to God,	16 ¿No está en sus propias manos su ventura, aunque el consejo de los malos quede lejos de Dios?
17 How often is the lamp of the wicked put out? How often does destruction come upon them, the portion he allots in his anger?	17 ¿Cuántas veces la lámpara de los malos se apaga, su desgracia irrumpe sobre ellos, y él reparte dolores en su cólera?
18 Let them be like straw before the wind, and like chaff which the storm snatches away!	18 ¿Son como paja ante el viento, como tamo que arrebata un torbellino?
19 May God not store up the man's misery for his children; let him requite the man himself so that he feels it,	19 ¿Va a guardar Dios para sus hijos su castigo? ¡que le castigue a él, para que sepa!
20 Let his own eyes see the calamity, and the wrath of the Almighty let him drink!	20 ¡Vea su ruina con sus propios ojos, beba de la furia de Sadday!
21 For what interest has he in his family after him, when the number of his months is finished?	21 ¿Qué le importa la suerte de su casa, después de él, cuando se haya cortado la cuenta de sus meses?
22 Can anyone teach God knowledge, seeing that he judges those on high?	22 Pero, ¿se enseña a Dios la ciencia? ¡Si es él quien juzga a los seres más excelsos!
23 One dies in his full vigor, wholly at ease and content;	23 Hay quien muere en su pleno vigor, en el colmo de la dicha y de la paz,
24 His figure is full and nourished, and his bones are rich in marrow.	24 repletos de grasa su ijares, bien empapado el meollo de sus huesos.
25 Another dies in bitterness of soul, having never tasted happiness.	25 Y hay quien muere, la amargura en el alma, sin haber gustado la ventura.
26 Alike they lie down in the dust, and worms cover them both.	26 Juntos luego se acuestan en el polvo, y los gusanos los recubren.
27 Behold, I know your thoughts, and the arguments you rehearse against me.	27 ¡Oh, sé muy bien lo que pensáis, las malas ideas que os formáis sobre mí!
28 For you say, "Where is the house of the magnate, and where the dwelling place of the wicked?"	28 «¿Dónde está, os decís, la casa del magnate? ¿dónde la tienda que habitaban los malos?»
29 Have you not asked the wayfarers and do you not recognize their monuments?	29 ¿No habéis interrogado a los viandantes? ¿no os han pasmado los casos que refieren?
30 Nay, the evil man is spared calamity when it comes;	30 Que el malo es preservado en el día del desastre, en el día de los furores queda a salvo.
31 Who will charge him with his conduct to his face, and for what he has done who will repay him?	31 Pues, ¿quién le echa en cara su conducta y le da el merecido de su obras?
32 and on the day he is carried to the grave	32 Cuando es llevado al cementerio, sobre el mausoleo hace vela.
33 Sweet to him are the clods of the valley, and over him the funeral mound keeps watch, While all the line of mankind follows him, and the countless others who have gone before.	33 Dulces le son los terrones del torrente, y detrás de él desfila todo el mundo.
34 How then can you offer me vain comfort, while in your answers perfidy remains?	34 ¿Cómo, pues, me consoláis tan en vano? ¡Pura falacia son vuestras respuestas!
