1 Then Job said in reply:	1 Rispose Giobbe, e disse:
2 At least listen to my words, and let that be the consolation you offer.	2 Ponete mente, vi prego, alle mie parole, e cangiate di opinione.
3 Bear with me while I speak; and after I have spoken, you can mock!	3 Soffrite che parli anch' io, e di poi burlatevi, se cosi vi parrà, delle mie parole.
4 Is my complaint toward man? And why should I not be impatient?	4 Forse io disputo con un uomo, onde io non abbia ragion di attristarmi?
5 Look at me and be astonished, put your hands over your mouths.	5 Miratemi attentamente, e rimarrete stupefatti, e vi metterete il dita alla bocca:
6 When I think of it, I am dismayed, and horror takes hold on my flesh.	6 Io stesso quando vi ripenso mi atterrisco, e la mia carne è scossa dal tremito.
7 Why do the wicked survive, grow old, become mighty in power?	7 Perché adunque vivono gli empj, e sono innalzati, e son possenti per le loro ricchezze?
8 Their progeny is secure in their sight; they see before them their kinsfolk and their offspring.	8 Veggonsi stare attorno la loro progenie, hanno dinanzi una turba di parenti, e di nipoti.
9 Their homes are safe and without fear, nor is the scourge of God upon them.	9 Le loro case sono tranquille, e in pace, e non si fa ad essi sentire la verga di Dio.
10 Their bulls gender without fail; their cows calve and do not miscarry.	10 Le loro vacche non sono sterili, e non abortiscono; concepiscono, e non disperdono i loro parti.
11 These folk have infants numerous as lambs, and their children dance.	11 Escon fuori in truppa come pecore i loro teneri figli, e saltano, e scherzano.
12 They sing to the timbrel and harp, and make merry to the sound of the flute.	12 Portano timpani, e cetre, e danzano al suono degli strumenti.
13 They live out their days in prosperity, and tranquilly go down to the nether world.	13 Passano felici i loro giorni, e in un istante scendono nel sepolcro.
14 Yet they say to God, "Depart from us, for we have no wish to learn your ways!	14 Eglino che dissero a Dio: Va lungi da noi, non vogliam saper nulla de' tuoi documenti.
15 What is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what gain shall we have if we pray to him?"	15 Chi è quest'Onnipotente, che noi dobbiamo servirlo, e che gioverebbe a noi il pregarlo?
16 If their happiness is not in their own hands and if the counsel of the wicked is repulsive to God,	16 Ma poiché in loro potestà non sono i beni loro, sia perciò lungi da me il sistema degli empj.
17 How often is the lamp of the wicked put out? How often does destruction come upon them, the portion he allots in his anger?	17 Quante volte poi si spegne la lucerna degli empj, e vien sopra di essi la piena, e (Dio) nell'ira sua da ad essi la loro porzione di dolori?
18 Let them be like straw before the wind, and like chaff which the storm snatches away!	18 Saran come paglia al soffiar del vento, e come loppa dispersa da turbine.
19 May God not store up the man's misery for his children; let him requite the man himself so that he feels it,	19 Serberà Dio a' figliuoli la pena del padre: e quando Dio renderà mercede, allora quegli imparerà.
20 Let his own eyes see the calamity, and the wrath of the Almighty let him drink!	20 Vedrà egli co' proprj occhi il suo sterminio, e berà il furore dell'Onnipotente.
21 For what interest has he in his family after him, when the number of his months is finished?	21 Perocché che importa a lui quel che sarà della sua casa, quando il numero de' suoi mesi sia troncato nel mezzo?
22 Can anyone teach God knowledge, seeing that he judges those on high?	22 Vi sarà forse chi insegni a Dio, a lui che giudica i grandi?
23 One dies in his full vigor, wholly at ease and content;	23 Quegli muore robusto, e sano, e ricco, e felice;
24 His figure is full and nourished, and his bones are rich in marrow.	24 Le sue viscere sono coperte di grasso, e le sue ossa di midollo:
25 Another dies in bitterness of soul, having never tasted happiness.	25 Un altro poi muore tralle afflizioni di spirito, e privo di ogni bene.
26 Alike they lie down in the dust, and worms cover them both.	26 E con tutto ciò si giaceranno insieme nella polvere, e saran ricoperti dai vermi.
27 Behold, I know your thoughts, and the arguments you rehearse against me.	27 Certo io comprendo i vostri pensieri, e gli ingiusti giudizj vostri contro di me.
28 For you say, "Where is the house of the magnate, and where the dwelling place of the wicked?"	28 Perocché voi dite: La casa di quel principe dov'è? E dove sono i padiglioni degli empj?
29 Have you not asked the wayfarers and do you not recognize their monuments?	29 Interrogate chicchessia de' viaggiatori, e sentirete, che in questa guisa egli pensa.
30 Nay, the evil man is spared calamity when it comes;	30 Perocché pel giorno della vendetta è riserbato l'iniquo, e sarà condotto al dì del furore.
31 Who will charge him with his conduct to his face, and for what he has done who will repay him?	31 Chi biasimerà in faccia a lui i suoi andamenti? E chi a lui renderà quel ch'egli ha fatto?
32 and on the day he is carried to the grave	32 Egli sarà condotto al sepolcro, e starà immobile tralla turba de' morti.
33 Sweet to him are the clods of the valley, and over him the funeral mound keeps watch, While all the line of mankind follows him, and the countless others who have gone before.	33 La ghiaia del Cocito godè di averlo, ed ei tirerà dietro a se tutta la gente, e innanzi a se avrà una turba infinita.
34 How then can you offer me vain comfort, while in your answers perfidy remains?	34 Quanto vana è adunque la consolazione che voi mi recate, mentre è dimostrato, che quel che voi dite repugna al vero?
