1 Then Job said in reply:	1 - Ma Giobbe rispose e disse:
2 At least listen to my words, and let that be the consolation you offer.	2 «Ascoltate, vi prego, le mie parole, e cambiate opinione.
3 Bear with me while I speak; and after I have spoken, you can mock!	3 Tolleratemi ed io parlerò, e dopo le mie parole, se vi pare, ridete pure.
4 Is my complaint toward man? And why should I not be impatient?	4 Sto io forse a disputar contro un uomo, sì che io non abbia motivo d'attristarmi?
5 Look at me and be astonished, put your hands over your mouths.	5 Volgetevi a me e inorridite, e mettetevi un dito sulla bocca:
6 When I think of it, I am dismayed, and horror takes hold on my flesh.	6 pur io, se vi ripenso, allibisco, e un tremore scuote le mie carni.
7 Why do the wicked survive, grow old, become mighty in power?	7 Perchè dunque gli empii vivono, s'innalzano e hanno grandi ricchezze?
8 Their progeny is secure in their sight; they see before them their kinsfolk and their offspring.	8 La loro stirpe persiste innanzi a loro, e una turba di parenti e nepoti sta al loro cospetto;
9 Their homes are safe and without fear, nor is the scourge of God upon them.	9 le loro case sono tranquille e in pace, nè la verga di Dio cade su loro;
10 Their bulls gender without fail; their cows calve and do not miscarry.	10 il loro bove va alla monta e non rifiuta, la vacca partorisce senza disperdere il feto.
11 These folk have infants numerous as lambs, and their children dance.	11 Se non vanno qual gregge i loro ragazzi, e i loro fanciulli saltellano scherzando.
12 They sing to the timbrel and harp, and make merry to the sound of the flute.	12 Suonano il timpano e la cetra, e fanno festa al suono del flauto.
13 They live out their days in prosperity, and tranquilly go down to the nether world.	13 Consumano nella felicità i loro giorni, quindi in pace discendono agli ìnferi.
14 Yet they say to God, "Depart from us, for we have no wish to learn your ways!	14 Esclamarono essi verso Dio: - Va' lungi da noi; la dottrina dei tuoi precetti noi non gradiamo.
15 What is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what gain shall we have if we pray to him?"	15 Chi è mai l'Onnipotente, che lo dobbiamo servire, e in che ci gioverebbe se lo pregassimo? -
16 If their happiness is not in their own hands and if the counsel of the wicked is repulsive to God,	16 Tuttavia, poichè essi non son padroni dei loro beni, il consiglio degli empii sia lungi da me!
17 How often is the lamp of the wicked put out? How often does destruction come upon them, the portion he allots in his anger?	17 Quante volte la lucerna degli empii si spegne, e li raggiunge l'inondazione [di tutti i mali], assegnando [Dio] i castighi dell'ira sua?
18 Let them be like straw before the wind, and like chaff which the storm snatches away!	18 Dovrebbero essere come paglia al vento, e come pula dispersa dal turbine.
19 May God not store up the man's misery for his children; let him requite the man himself so that he feels it,	19 Dio riserba ai figli il castigo del padre: ma ripaghi lui stesso, e allora imparerà!
20 Let his own eyes see the calamity, and the wrath of the Almighty let him drink!	20 vedano i suoi occhi il proprio sterminio, e del furore dell'Onnipotente egli beva!
21 For what interest has he in his family after him, when the number of his months is finished?	21 Giacchè che importa a lui di quei di casa sua dopo di sè, quando il numero dei suoi mesi [di vita], è compiuto?
22 Can anyone teach God knowledge, seeing that he judges those on high?	22 Insegnerà forse qualcuno la sapienza a Dioche giudica gli eccelsi?
23 One dies in his full vigor, wholly at ease and content;	23 Questo muore robusto e sano, ricco e pur felice,
24 His figure is full and nourished, and his bones are rich in marrow.	24 il suo corpo è tutto pinguedine, e le sue ossa son grasse di midollo:
25 Another dies in bitterness of soul, having never tasted happiness.	25 Quest'altro muore nell'amarezza d'animo, senza nessun bene;
26 Alike they lie down in the dust, and worms cover them both.	26 tuttavia insieme nella polvere giacciono, e li ricoprono i vermini.
27 Behold, I know your thoughts, and the arguments you rehearse against me.	27 Io ben conosco i vostri pensierie le vostre inique sentenze contro di me;
28 For you say, "Where is the house of the magnate, and where the dwelling place of the wicked?"	28 voi infatti dite: - Ov'è mai la casa del tiranno? e ove son mai le abitazioni degli empii? -
29 Have you not asked the wayfarers and do you not recognize their monuments?	29 Ebbene, interrogate un viaggiatore qualunque, e vi convincerete ch'egli la pensa nel modo seguente:
30 Nay, the evil man is spared calamity when it comes;	30 Pel giorno di rovina il malvagio è risparmiato, e fino al giorno d'ira egli sarà tollerato.
31 Who will charge him with his conduct to his face, and for what he has done who will repay him?	31 Chi gli rinfaccia apertamente la sua condotta? e ciò ch'ei commise, chi glielo ripaga?
32 and on the day he is carried to the grave	32 Eppure alle sepolture [onorevoli] egli viene portato, e sul tumulo de' morti c'è chi fa la guardia.
33 Sweet to him are the clods of the valley, and over him the funeral mound keeps watch, While all the line of mankind follows him, and the countless others who have gone before.	33 Dolci sono a lui le zolle della valle [funerea]; ed egli trascina dietro a sè ogni uomo, come già prima di sè altri innumerevoli.
34 How then can you offer me vain comfort, while in your answers perfidy remains?	34 Come dunque mi consolerete con vane [ragioni], se la vostra risposta chiaramente ripugna alla verità?»
