1 After Alexander the Macedonian, Philip's son, who came from the land of Kittim, had defeated Darius, king of the Persians and Medes, he became king in his place, having first ruled in Greece.	1 Avvenne che Alessandro il macedone, figlio di Filippo, uscito dal paese dei Chittim, dopo aver battuto Dario, re dei Persi e dei Medi, regnò in suo luogo, incominciando dalla Grecia.
2 He fought many campaigns, captured fortresses, and put kings to death.	2 Intraprese poi molte guerre, s'impadronì di fortezze e uccise i re della terra,
3 He advanced to the ends of the earth, gathering plunder from many nations; the earth fell silent before him, and his heart became proud and arrogant.	3 giunse fino alle estremità della terra e portò via le spoglie di una moltitudine di popoli. Davanti a lui la terra tacque, ma il suo cuore montò in superbia.
4 He collected a very strong army and conquered provinces, nations, and rulers, and they became his tributaries.	4 Radunò un esercito molto potente e sottomise regioni, nazioni e prìncipi che divennero suoi tributari.
5 But after all this he took to his bed, realizing that he was going to die.	5 Ma dopo di ciò cadde ammalato e comprese che doveva morire.
6 He therefore summoned his officers, the nobles, who had been brought up with him from his youth, to divide his kingdom among them while he was still alive.	6 Perciò chiamò i suoi ufficiali più illustri, che erano stati educati con lui fin dalla fanciullezza, e divise tra loro il suo regno mentre era ancora vivo.

10 There sprang from these a sinful offshoot, Antiochus Epiphanes, son of King Antiochus, once a hostage at Rome. He became king in the year one hundred and thirty-seven of the kingdom of the Greeks.	10 Finché uscì da essi un rampollo peccatore, Antioco Epifane, figlio del re Antioco, il quale era stato ostaggio a Roma. Egli incominciò a regnare l'anno 137 del regno dei Greci.
11 In those days there appeared in Israel men who were breakers of the law, and they seduced many people, saying: "Let us go and make an alliance with the Gentiles all around us; since we separated from them, many evils have come upon us."	11 In quei giorni uscirono da Israele dei figli iniqui, i quali sedussero molte persone dicendo: "Andiamo e facciamo alleanza con le genti che sono intorno a noi; poiché, da quando ci siamo separati da esse, ci incolsero molti mali".
12 The proposal was agreeable;	12 Questo discorso parve buono ai loro occhi.
13 some from among the people promptly went to the king, and he authorized them to introduce the way of living of the Gentiles.	13 Perciò alcuni tra il popolo s'incaricarono di andare dal re, il quale diede loro facoltà di adottare le leggi delle genti.
14 Thereupon they built a gymnasium in Jerusalem according to the Gentile custom.	14 Costruirono un ginnasio in Gerusalemme secondo l'uso delle genti,
15 They covered over the mark of their circumcision and abandoned the holy covenant; they allied themselves with the Gentiles and sold themselves to wrongdoing.	15 cancellarono i segni della circoncisione e si staccarono dalla santa alleanza: così si posero sotto il giogo delle genti e si vendettero per fare il male.
16 When his kingdom seemed secure, Antiochus proposed to become king of Egypt, so as to rule over both kingdoms.	16 Quando gli parve che il regno fosse ben consolidato, Antioco volle estendere il suo potere sulla terra d'Egitto per regnare sui due regni:
17 He invaded Egypt with a strong force, with chariots and elephants, and with a large fleet,	17 con un'armata imponente di carri, elefanti, cavalli e una grande flotta invase l'Egitto
18 to make war on Ptolemy, king of Egypt. Ptolemy was frightened at his presence and fled, leaving many casualties.	18 e affrontò in battaglia Tolomeo, re d'Egitto. Davanti a lui Tolomeo ripiegò e poi fuggì, e molti caddero feriti.
19 The fortified cities in the land of Egypt were captured, and Antiochus plundered the land of Egypt.	19 Così Antioco conquistò le città fortificate che erano nella terra d'Egitto e prese il suo bottino.
20 After Antiochus had defeated Egypt in the year one hundred and forty-three, he returned and went up to Israel and to Jerusalem with a strong force.	20 Dopo aver battuto l'Egitto nell'anno 14 3, Antioco prese la via del ritorno e marciò contro Israele, salendo fino a Gerusalemme con una grande armata.
21 He insolently invaded the sanctuary and took away the golden altar, the lampstand for the light with all its fixtures,	21 Entrò nel santuario con arroganza e ne asportò l'altare d'oro, il candelabro della luce con tutti i suoi accessori,
22 the offering table, the cups and the bowls, the golden censers, the curtain, the crowns, and the golden ornament on the facade of the temple. 23 and took away the gold and silver and the precious vessels; he also took all the hidden treasures he could find.	23 Prese inoltre l'argento, l'oro e i vasi preziosi, come pure i tesori nascosti che poté trovare.
24 Taking all this, he went back to his own country, after he had spoken with great arrogance and shed much blood.	24 Poi, raccolta ogni cosa, se ne tornò alla sua terra, dopo aver fatto una strage e proferito parole di grande insolenza.
25 And there was great mourning for Israel, in every place where they dwelt,	25 Allora vi fu un grande lamento per Israele, in tutto il suo territorio.
26 and the rulers and the elders groaned. Virgins and young men languished, and the beauty of the women was disfigured.	26 Gemettero i prìncipi e gli anziani, languirono fanciulle e ragazzi e venne meno la bellezza delle donne.
27 Every bridegroom took up lamentation, she who sat in the bridal chamber mourned,	27 Ogni giovane sposo alzò un lamento, nella camera nuziale la sposa mise il lutto.
28 And the land was shaken on account of its inhabitants, and all the house of Jacob was covered with shame.	28 Anche la terra sussultò per i suoi abitanti, e tutta la casa di Giacobbe si rivestì di confusione.
29 Two years later, the king sent the Mysian commander to the cities of Judah, and he came to Jerusalem with a strong force.	29 Due anni dopo, il re inviò un soprintendente ai tributi nelle città di Giuda, il quale venne a Gerusalemme con una grande armata.
30 He spoke to them deceitfully in peaceful terms, and won their trust. Then he attacked the city suddenly, in a great onslaught, and destroyed many of the people in Israel.	30 Rivolse loro con inganno discorsi di pace ed essi gli prestarono fede. 33 Then they built up the City of David with a high, massive wall and strong towers, and it became their citadel.	33 Fortificarono la Città di Davide con un muro grande e robusto e con delle torri potenti e ne fecero la loro roccaforte.
34 There they installed a sinful race, perverse men, who fortified themselves inside it,	34 Vi stabilirono gente empia, uomini iniqui, e vi si fortificarono.
35 storing up weapons and provisions, and depositing there the plunder they had collected from Jerusalem. And they became a great threat.	35 Vi ammassarono armi e vettovaglie e vi depositarono il bottino raccolto in Gerusalemme. Divenne così un grande tranello.
36 The citadel became an ambush against the sanctuary, and a wicked adversary to Israel at all times.	36 Fu un'insidia per il santuario, un nemico perverso per Israele in continuazione.
37 And they shed innocent blood around the sanctuary; they defiled the sanctuary.	37 Sparsero sangue innocente intorno al santuario, e profanarono il santuario.
38 Because of them the inhabitants of Jerusalem fled away, and she became the abode of strangers. 44 The king sent messengers with letters to Jerusalem and to the cities of Judah, ordering them to follow customs foreign to their land;	44 Il re inviò pure, per mezzo di messaggeri, lettere a Gerusalemme e nelle città di Giuda con l'ordine di seguire i costumi estranei alla regione,

46 to desecrate the sanctuary and the sacred ministers,	46 di contaminare il santuario e i santi,

48 to leave their sons uncircumcised, and to let themselves be defiled with every kind of impurity and abomination,	48 di lasciare i loro figli incirconcisi e di rendere abominevoli le loro anime con ogni sorta d'impurità e di profanazione,
49 so that they might forget the law and change all their observances.	49 cosicché si dimenticassero della legge e cambiassero le tradizioni.
50 Whoever refused to act according to the command of the king should be put to death.	50 Chiunque non avesse agito secondo l'ordine del re, sarebbe stato messo a morte.
51 Such were the orders he published throughout his kingdom. He appointed inspectors over all the people, and he ordered the cities of Judah to offer sacrifices, each city in turn.	51 In conformità a tutti questi ordini, che aveva inviato in tutto il regno, stabilì poi degli ispettori per tutto il popolo e ingiunse alle città di Giuda di offrire sacrifici, città per città.
52 Many of the people, those who abandoned the law, joined them and committed evil in the land.	52 Molti tra il popolo si unirono ad essi, tutta gente che aveva abbandonato la legge, e fecero del male nel paese,
53 Israel was driven into hiding, wherever places of refuge could be found.	53 costringendo Israele a vivere nei nascondigli e in ogni sorta di rifugio.
54 On the fifteenth day of the month Chislev, in the year one hundred and forty-five, the king erected the horrible abomination upon the altar of holocausts, and in the surrounding cities of Judah they built pagan altars.	54 Il giorno 15 di Casleu, nell'anno 14 5, costruirono l'abominazione della desolazione sull'altare degli olocausti e nelle città di Giuda circonvicine costruirono altari.
55 They also burnt incense at the doors of houses and in the streets.	55 Sulle porte delle case e nelle piazze si offrivano sacrifici.
56 Any scrolls of the law which they found they tore up and burnt.	56 I libri della legge, come venivano trovati, li gettavano al fuoco, dopo averli lacerati.
57 Whoever was found with a scroll of the covenant, and whoever observed the law, was condemned to death by royal decree.	57 Se presso qualcuno veniva scoperto il libro dell'alleanza o se qualche altro osservava la legge, era ordine del re che si uccidesse.
58 So they used their power against Israel, against those who were caught, each month, in the cities.	58 Nella loro potenza così agivano contro Israele con quelli che venivano scoperti, mese per mese, nelle singole città.
59 On the twenty-fifth day of each month they sacrificed on the altar erected over the altar of holocausts.	59 Il 25 del mese si offrivano sacrifici sull'ara che era sull'altare degli olocausti.

63 they preferred to die rather than to be defiled with unclean food or to profane the holy covenant; and they did die. Terrible affliction was upon Israel.	63 E preferendo morire per non contaminarsi con cibi e per non profanare la santa alleanza, di fatto morirono.
	64 Fu davvero grande l'ira su Israele!
