NEW AMERICAN BIBLELXX
After Alexander the Macedonian, Philip's son, who came from the land of Kittim, had defeated Darius, king of the Persians and Medes, he became king in his place, having first ruled in Greece.1 και εγενετο μετα το παταξαι αλεξανδρον τον φιλιππου μακεδονα ος εξηλθεν εκ γης χεττιιμ και επαταξεν τον δαρειον βασιλεα περσων και μηδων και εβασιλευσεν αντ' αυτου προτερον επι την ελλαδα
He fought many campaigns, captured fortresses, and put kings to death.2 και συνεστησατο πολεμους πολλους και εκρατησεν οχυρωματων και εσφαξεν βασιλεις της γης
He advanced to the ends of the earth, gathering plunder from many nations; the earth fell silent before him, and his heart became proud and arrogant.3 και διηλθεν εως ακρων της γης και ελαβεν σκυλα πληθους εθνων και ησυχασεν η γη ενωπιον αυτου και υψωθη και επηρθη η καρδια αυτου
He collected a very strong army and conquered provinces, nations, and rulers, and they became his tributaries.4 και συνηξεν δυναμιν ισχυραν σφοδρα και ηρξεν χωρων εθνων και τυραννων και εγενοντο αυτω εις φορον
But after all this he took to his bed, realizing that he was going to die.5 και μετα ταυτα επεσεν επι την κοιτην και εγνω οτι αποθνησκει
He therefore summoned his officers, the nobles, who had been brought up with him from his youth, to divide his kingdom among them while he was still alive.6 και εκαλεσεν τους παιδας αυτου τους ενδοξους τους συνεκτροφους αυτου εκ νεοτητος και διειλεν αυτοις την βασιλειαν αυτου ετι αυτου ζωντος
Alexander had reigned twelve years when he died.7 και εβασιλευσεν αλεξανδρος ετη δωδεκα και απεθανεν
So his officers took over his kingdom, each in his own territory,8 και επεκρατησαν οι παιδες αυτου εκαστος εν τω τοπω αυτου
and after his death they all put on royal crowns, and so did their sons after them for many years, causing much distress over the earth.9 και επεθεντο παντες διαδηματα μετα το αποθανειν αυτον και οι υιοι αυτων οπισω αυτων ετη πολλα και επληθυναν κακα εν τη γη
There sprang from these a sinful offshoot, Antiochus Epiphanes, son of King Antiochus, once a hostage at Rome. He became king in the year one hundred and thirty-seven of the kingdom of the Greeks.10 και εξηλθεν εξ αυτων ριζα αμαρτωλος αντιοχος επιφανης υιος αντιοχου του βασιλεως ος ην ομηρα εν ρωμη και εβασιλευσεν εν ετει εκατοστω και τριακοστω και εβδομω βασιλειας ελληνων
In those days there appeared in Israel men who were breakers of the law, and they seduced many people, saying: "Let us go and make an alliance with the Gentiles all around us; since we separated from them, many evils have come upon us."11 εν ταις ημεραις εκειναις εξηλθον εξ ισραηλ υιοι παρανομοι και ανεπεισαν πολλους λεγοντες πορευθωμεν και διαθωμεθα διαθηκην μετα των εθνων των κυκλω ημων οτι αφ' ης εχωρισθημεν απ' αυτων ευρεν ημας κακα πολλα
The proposal was agreeable;12 και ηγαθυνθη ο λογος εν οφθαλμοις αυτων
some from among the people promptly went to the king, and he authorized them to introduce the way of living of the Gentiles.13 και προεθυμηθησαν τινες απο του λαου και επορευθησαν προς τον βασιλεα και εδωκεν αυτοις εξουσιαν ποιησαι τα δικαιωματα των εθνων
Thereupon they built a gymnasium in Jerusalem according to the Gentile custom.14 και ωκοδομησαν γυμνασιον εν ιεροσολυμοις κατα τα νομιμα των εθνων
They covered over the mark of their circumcision and abandoned the holy covenant; they allied themselves with the Gentiles and sold themselves to wrongdoing.15 και εποιησαν εαυτοις ακροβυστιας και απεστησαν απο διαθηκης αγιας και εζευγισθησαν τοις εθνεσιν και επραθησαν του ποιησαι το πονηρον
When his kingdom seemed secure, Antiochus proposed to become king of Egypt, so as to rule over both kingdoms.16 και ητοιμασθη η βασιλεια ενωπιον αντιοχου και υπελαβεν βασιλευσαι γης αιγυπτου οπως βασιλευση επι τας δυο βασιλειας
He invaded Egypt with a strong force, with chariots and elephants, and with a large fleet,17 και εισηλθεν εις αιγυπτον εν οχλω βαρει εν αρμασιν και ελεφασιν και εν ιππευσιν και εν στολω μεγαλω
to make war on Ptolemy, king of Egypt. Ptolemy was frightened at his presence and fled, leaving many casualties.18 και συνεστησατο πολεμον προς πτολεμαιον βασιλεα αιγυπτου και ενετραπη πτολεμαιος απο προσωπου αυτου και εφυγεν και επεσον τραυματιαι πολλοι
The fortified cities in the land of Egypt were captured, and Antiochus plundered the land of Egypt.19 και κατελαβοντο τας πολεις τας οχυρας εν γη αιγυπτω και ελαβεν τα σκυλα γης αιγυπτου
After Antiochus had defeated Egypt in the year one hundred and forty-three, he returned and went up to Israel and to Jerusalem with a strong force.20 και επεστρεψεν αντιοχος μετα το παταξαι αιγυπτον εν τω εκατοστω και τεσσαρακοστω και τριτω ετει και ανεβη επι ισραηλ και ανεβη εις ιεροσολυμα εν οχλω βαρει
He insolently invaded the sanctuary and took away the golden altar, the lampstand for the light with all its fixtures,21 και εισηλθεν εις το αγιασμα εν υπερηφανια και ελαβεν το θυσιαστηριον το χρυσουν και την λυχνιαν του φωτος και παντα τα σκευη αυτης
the offering table, the cups and the bowls, the golden censers, the curtain, the crowns, and the golden ornament on the facade of the temple. He stripped off everything,22 και την τραπεζαν της προθεσεως και τα σπονδεια και τας φιαλας και τας θυισκας τας χρυσας και το καταπετασμα και τους στεφανους και τον κοσμον τον χρυσουν τον κατα προσωπον του ναου και ελεπισεν παντα
and took away the gold and silver and the precious vessels; he also took all the hidden treasures he could find.23 και ελαβεν το αργυριον και το χρυσιον και τα σκευη τα επιθυμητα και ελαβεν τους θησαυρους τους αποκρυφους ους ευρεν
Taking all this, he went back to his own country, after he had spoken with great arrogance and shed much blood.24 και λαβων παντα απηλθεν εις την γην αυτου και εποιησεν φονοκτονιαν και ελαλησεν υπερηφανιαν μεγαλην
And there was great mourning for Israel, in every place where they dwelt,25 και εγενετο πενθος μεγα επι ισραηλ εν παντι τοπω αυτων
and the rulers and the elders groaned. Virgins and young men languished, and the beauty of the women was disfigured.26 και εστεναξαν αρχοντες και πρεσβυτεροι παρθενοι και νεανισκοι ησθενησαν και το καλλος των γυναικων ηλλοιωθη
Every bridegroom took up lamentation, she who sat in the bridal chamber mourned,27 πας νυμφιος ανελαβεν θρηνον και καθημενη εν παστω επενθει
And the land was shaken on account of its inhabitants, and all the house of Jacob was covered with shame.28 και εσεισθη η γη επι τους κατοικουντας αυτην και πας ο οικος ιακωβ ενεδυσατο αισχυνην
Two years later, the king sent the Mysian commander to the cities of Judah, and he came to Jerusalem with a strong force.29 μετα δυο ετη ημερων απεστειλεν ο βασιλευς αρχοντα φορολογιας εις τας πολεις ιουδα και ηλθεν εις ιερουσαλημ εν οχλω βαρει
He spoke to them deceitfully in peaceful terms, and won their trust. Then he attacked the city suddenly, in a great onslaught, and destroyed many of the people in Israel.30 και ελαλησεν αυτοις λογους ειρηνικους εν δολω και ενεπιστευσαν αυτω και επεπεσεν επι την πολιν εξαπινα και επαταξεν αυτην πληγην μεγαλην και απωλεσεν λαον πολυν εξ ισραηλ
He plundered the city and set fire to it, demolished its houses and its surrounding walls,31 και ελαβεν τα σκυλα της πολεως και ενεπρησεν αυτην πυρι και καθειλεν τους οικους αυτης και τα τειχη κυκλω
took captive the women and children, and seized the cattle.32 και ηχμαλωτισαν τας γυναικας και τα τεκνα και τα κτηνη εκληρονομησαν
Then they built up the City of David with a high, massive wall and strong towers, and it became their citadel.33 και ωκοδομησαν την πολιν δαυιδ τειχει μεγαλω και οχυρω πυργοις οχυροις και εγενετο αυτοις εις ακραν
There they installed a sinful race, perverse men, who fortified themselves inside it,34 και εθηκαν εκει εθνος αμαρτωλον ανδρας παρανομους και ενισχυσαν εν αυτη
storing up weapons and provisions, and depositing there the plunder they had collected from Jerusalem. And they became a great threat.35 και παρεθεντο οπλα και τροφην και συναγαγοντες τα σκυλα ιερουσαλημ απεθεντο εκει και εγενοντο εις μεγαλην παγιδα
The citadel became an ambush against the sanctuary, and a wicked adversary to Israel at all times.36 και εγενετο εις ενεδρον τω αγιασματι και εις διαβολον πονηρον τω ισραηλ δια παντος
And they shed innocent blood around the sanctuary; they defiled the sanctuary.37 και εξεχεαν αιμα αθωον κυκλω του αγιασματος και εμολυναν το αγιασμα
Because of them the inhabitants of Jerusalem fled away, and she became the abode of strangers. She became a stranger to her own offspring, and her children forsook her.38 και εφυγον οι κατοικοι ιερουσαλημ δι' αυτους και εγενετο κατοικια αλλοτριων και εγενετο αλλοτρια τοις γενημασιν αυτης και τα τεκνα αυτης εγκατελιπον αυτην
Her sanctuary was as desolate as a wilderness; her feasts were turned into mourning, Her sabbaths to shame, her honor to contempt.39 το αγιασμα αυτης ηρημωθη ως ερημος αι εορται αυτης εστραφησαν εις πενθος τα σαββατα αυτης εις ονειδισμον η τιμη αυτης εις εξουδενωσιν
Her dishonor was as great as her glory had been, and her exalation was turned into mourning.40 κατα την δοξαν αυτης επληθυνθη η ατιμια αυτης και το υψος αυτης εστραφη εις πενθος
Then the king wrote to his whole kingdom that all should be one people,41 και εγραψεν ο βασιλευς παση τη βασιλεια αυτου ειναι παντας εις λαον ενα
each abandoning his particular customs. All the Gentiles conformed to the command of the king,42 και εγκαταλιπειν εκαστον τα νομιμα αυτου και επεδεξαντο παντα τα εθνη κατα τον λογον του βασιλεως
and many Israelites were in favor of his religion; they sacrificed to idols and profaned the sabbath.43 και πολλοι απο ισραηλ ευδοκησαν τη λατρεια αυτου και εθυσαν τοις ειδωλοις και εβεβηλωσαν το σαββατον
The king sent messengers with letters to Jerusalem and to the cities of Judah, ordering them to follow customs foreign to their land;44 και απεστειλεν ο βασιλευς βιβλια εν χειρι αγγελων εις ιερουσαλημ και τας πολεις ιουδα πορευθηναι οπισω νομιμων αλλοτριων της γης
to prohibit holocausts, sacrifices, and libations in the sanctuary, to profane the sabbaths and feast days,45 και κωλυσαι ολοκαυτωματα και θυσιαν και σπονδην εκ του αγιασματος και βεβηλωσαι σαββατα και εορτας
to desecrate the sanctuary and the sacred ministers,46 και μιαναι αγιασμα και αγιους
to build pagan altars and temples and shrines, to sacrifice swine and unclean animals,47 οικοδομησαι βωμους και τεμενη και ειδωλια και θυειν υεια και κτηνη κοινα
to leave their sons uncircumcised, and to let themselves be defiled with every kind of impurity and abomination,48 και αφιεναι τους υιους αυτων απεριτμητους βδελυξαι τας ψυχας αυτων εν παντι ακαθαρτω και βεβηλωσει
so that they might forget the law and change all their observances.49 ωστε επιλαθεσθαι του νομου και αλλαξαι παντα τα δικαιωματα
Whoever refused to act according to the command of the king should be put to death.50 και ος αν μη ποιηση κατα τον λογον του βασιλεως αποθανειται
Such were the orders he published throughout his kingdom. He appointed inspectors over all the people, and he ordered the cities of Judah to offer sacrifices, each city in turn.51 κατα παντας τους λογους τουτους εγραψεν παση τη βασιλεια αυτου και εποιησεν επισκοπους επι παντα τον λαον και ενετειλατο ταις πολεσιν ιουδα θυσιαζειν κατα πολιν και πολιν
Many of the people, those who abandoned the law, joined them and committed evil in the land.52 και συνηθροισθησαν απο του λαου πολλοι προς αυτους πας ο εγκαταλειπων τον νομον και εποιησαν κακα εν τη γη
Israel was driven into hiding, wherever places of refuge could be found.53 και εθεντο τον ισραηλ εν κρυφοις εν παντι φυγαδευτηριω αυτων
On the fifteenth day of the month Chislev, in the year one hundred and forty-five, the king erected the horrible abomination upon the altar of holocausts, and in the surrounding cities of Judah they built pagan altars.54 και τη πεντεκαιδεκατη ημερα χασελευ τω πεμπτω και τεσσαρακοστω και εκατοστω ετει ωκοδομησεν βδελυγμα ερημωσεως επι το θυσιαστηριον και εν πολεσιν ιουδα κυκλω ωκοδομησαν βωμους
They also burnt incense at the doors of houses and in the streets.55 και επι των θυρων των οικιων και εν ταις πλατειαις εθυμιων
Any scrolls of the law which they found they tore up and burnt.56 και τα βιβλια του νομου α ευρον ενεπυρισαν εν πυρι κατασχισαντες
Whoever was found with a scroll of the covenant, and whoever observed the law, was condemned to death by royal decree.57 και οπου ευρισκετο παρα τινι βιβλιον διαθηκης και ει τις συνευδοκει τω νομω το συγκριμα του βασιλεως εθανατου αυτον
So they used their power against Israel, against those who were caught, each month, in the cities.58 εν ισχυι αυτων εποιουν τω ισραηλ τοις ευρισκομενοις εν παντι μηνι και μηνι εν ταις πολεσιν
On the twenty-fifth day of each month they sacrificed on the altar erected over the altar of holocausts.59 και τη πεμπτη και εικαδι του μηνος θυσιαζοντες επι τον βωμον ος ην επι του θυσιαστηριου
Women who had had their children circumcised were put to death, in keeping with the decree,60 και τας γυναικας τας περιτετμηκυιας τα τεκνα αυτων εθανατωσαν κατα το προσταγμα
with the babies hung from their necks; their families also and those who had circumcised them were killed.61 και εκρεμασαν τα βρεφη εκ των τραχηλων αυτων και τους οικους αυτων και τους περιτετμηκοτας αυτους
But many in Israel were determined and resolved in their hearts not to eat anything unclean;62 και πολλοι εν ισραηλ εκραταιωθησαν και ωχυρωθησαν εν αυτοις του μη φαγειν κοινα
they preferred to die rather than to be defiled with unclean food or to profane the holy covenant; and they did die.
