1 After Alexander the Macedonian, Philip's son, who came from the land of Kittim, had defeated Darius, king of the Persians and Medes, he became king in his place, having first ruled in Greece.	1 Alexandre, fils de Philippe, roi de Macédoine, venait du pays de Kittim: il régnait jusque là sur la Grèce. Après avoir battu Darius, roi des Perses et des Mèdes, il régna à sa place.
2 He fought many campaigns, captured fortresses, and put kings to death.	2 Il livra de nombreux combats, il s’empara des villes fortifiées et mit à mort les rois de la région.
3 He advanced to the ends of the earth, gathering plunder from many nations; the earth fell silent before him, and his heart became proud and arrogant.	3 Il s’avança jusqu’aux extrémités du monde, ramassant les richesses de nombreux pays. La terre finit par se taire devant lui et son orgueil n’eut plus de limites.
4 He collected a very strong army and conquered provinces, nations, and rulers, and they became his tributaries.	4 Il réunit une armée très puissante, il domina des provinces, des peuples et des rois et il en fit ses serviteurs.
5 But after all this he took to his bed, realizing that he was going to die.	5 Mais après tout cela il tomba malade et vit qu’il allait mourir;
6 He therefore summoned his officers, the nobles, who had been brought up with him from his youth, to divide his kingdom among them while he was still alive.	6 alors il fit venir ses compagnons, ceux qui avaient été élevés avec lui depuis son enfance, et il leur partagea son royaume alors qu’il était encore en vie.
7 Alexander had reigned twelve years when he died.	7 Alexandre mourut donc après douze ans de règne;
8 So his officers took over his kingdom, each in his own territory,	8 ses compagnons prirent le pouvoir, chacun dans son secteur.
9 and after his death they all put on royal crowns, and so did their sons after them for many years, causing much distress over the earth.	9 Lui étant mort, ils se firent tous couronner rois, et de même leurs fils après eux pendant de longues années: le mal alla en augmentant sur la terre.
10 There sprang from these a sinful offshoot, Antiochus Epiphanes, son of King Antiochus, once a hostage at Rome. He became king in the year one hundred and thirty-seven of the kingdom of the Greeks.	10 L’un de leurs descendants, Antiocus Épiphane, fils du roi Antiocus, fut particulièrement mauvais. Il avait été d’abord otage à Rome, mais en l’an 137 de la royauté des Grecs, il monta sur le trône.
11 In those days there appeared in Israel men who were breakers of the law, and they seduced many people, saying: "Let us go and make an alliance with the Gentiles all around us; since we separated from them, many evils have come upon us."	11 C’est en ce temps-là que se leva en Israël une génération de gens dévoyés qui entraînèrent beaucoup de monde derrière eux: “Faisons alliance avec les nations qui nous entourent, disaient-ils, car depuis que nous nous sommes séparés d’elles, beaucoup de malheurs nous sont arrivés.”
12 The proposal was agreeable;	12 Ce genre de discours fut bien accueilli:
13 some from among the people promptly went to the king, and he authorized them to introduce the way of living of the Gentiles.	13 quelques personnes de notre peuple allèrent trouver le roi qui leur donna l’autorisation de suivre les coutumes des païens.
14 Thereupon they built a gymnasium in Jerusalem according to the Gentile custom.	14 Ils construisirent une salle de gymnastique à Jérusalem comme le faisaient les païens,
15 They covered over the mark of their circumcision and abandoned the holy covenant; they allied themselves with the Gentiles and sold themselves to wrongdoing.	15 ils se refirent des prépuces et renièrent l’Alliance sainte pour se mettre dans le même attelage que les païens; ils se vendirent pour faire le mal.
16 When his kingdom seemed secure, Antiochus proposed to become king of Egypt, so as to rule over both kingdoms.	16 Lorsque Antiocus pensa avoir son royaume bien en mains, il voulut régner aussi sur l’Égypte et devenir ainsi le souverain des deux royaumes.
17 He invaded Egypt with a strong force, with chariots and elephants, and with a large fleet,	17 Il entra en Égypte avec une puissante armée, des chars, des éléphants, des cavaliers et de nombreux bateaux.
18 to make war on Ptolemy, king of Egypt. Ptolemy was frightened at his presence and fled, leaving many casualties.	18 Il attaqua Ptolémée roi d’Égypte qui ne put résister et prit la fuite; beaucoup de ses hommes furent tués.
19 The fortified cities in the land of Egypt were captured, and Antiochus plundered the land of Egypt.	19 Antiocus s’empara des forteresses d’Égypte et fit main basse sur les richesses du pays.
20 After Antiochus had defeated Egypt in the year one hundred and forty-three, he returned and went up to Israel and to Jerusalem with a strong force.	20 Après avoir vaincu l’Égypte, il prit le chemin du retour en l’an 143. C’est alors qu’il marcha sur Israël et sur Jérusalem avec une puissante armée.
21 He insolently invaded the sanctuary and took away the golden altar, the lampstand for the light with all its fixtures,	21 Plein d’orgueil, Antiocus entra dans le sanctuaire, il enleva l’autel d’or, le chandelier sur lequel brille la lumière, avec tous les accessoires,
22 the offering table, the cups and the bowls, the golden censers, the curtain, the crowns, and the golden ornament on the facade of the temple. He stripped off everything,	22 la table et les vases pour les offrandes, les coupes, les encensoirs d’or, le voile, les couronnes; il arracha tout le plaquage d’or qui ornait la façade du Temple.
23 and took away the gold and silver and the precious vessels; he also took all the hidden treasures he could find.	23 Il ramassa l’argent et l’or, les objets précieux et tous les trésors cachés qu’il put découvrir.
24 Taking all this, he went back to his own country, after he had spoken with great arrogance and shed much blood.	24 Il emporta tout et retourna dans son pays. Il répandit beaucoup de sang et fit des déclarations insultantes contre Dieu.
25 And there was great mourning for Israel, in every place where they dwelt,	25 Le pays d’Israël tout entier était dans le deuil,
26 and the rulers and the elders groaned. Virgins and young men languished, and the beauty of the women was disfigured.	26 les chefs et les anciens gémissaient. Jeunes filles et jeunes gens restaient sans force, et les femmes en perdaient leur beauté.
27 Every bridegroom took up lamentation, she who sat in the bridal chamber mourned,	27 Les chants du marié se changèrent en lamentation et la mariée prit le deuil dans sa chambre.
28 And the land was shaken on account of its inhabitants, and all the house of Jacob was covered with shame.	28 La terre trembla à cause de ses habitants, toute la maison de Jacob était couverte de honte.
29 Two years later, the king sent the Mysian commander to the cities of Judah, and he came to Jerusalem with a strong force.	29 Deux ans plus tard, le roi envoya dans les villes de Juda un chef, qui arriva à Jérusalem avec une puissante armée.
30 He spoke to them deceitfully in peaceful terms, and won their trust. Then he attacked the city suddenly, in a great onslaught, and destroyed many of the people in Israel.	30 Il adressa de bonnes paroles aux habitants pour gagner leur confiance, mais c’était un mensonge, car ensuite il se jeta par surprise sur la ville, il la frappa brutalement et fit mourir beaucoup de gens d’Israël.
31 He plundered the city and set fire to it, demolished its houses and its surrounding walls,	31 Il pilla la ville, il l’incendia, il abattit ses maisons et son rempart.
32 took captive the women and children, and seized the cattle.	32 Ses soldats emmenèrent en captivité les femmes et les enfants et ramassèrent le bétail.
33 Then they built up the City of David with a high, massive wall and strong towers, and it became their citadel.	33 Alors ils reconstruisirent la cité de David pour en faire une forteresse avec un très gros rempart et des tours puissantes.
34 There they installed a sinful race, perverse men, who fortified themselves inside it,	34 À l’intérieur ils placèrent des gens sans conscience, des renégats qui s’y installèrent.
35 storing up weapons and provisions, and depositing there the plunder they had collected from Jerusalem. And they became a great threat.	35 Ils y emmagasinèrent des armes et des provisions, ils y entassèrent tout ce qu’ils avaient ramassé dans Jérusalem: elle devint une menace redoutable.
36 The citadel became an ambush against the sanctuary, and a wicked adversary to Israel at all times.	36 C’était un danger pour le Lieu Saint, et de là l’ennemi menaçait Israël en tout temps.
37 And they shed innocent blood around the sanctuary; they defiled the sanctuary.	37 Ils répandirent le sang innocent autour du sanctuaire, ils profanèrent le Lieu Saint.
38 Because of them the inhabitants of Jerusalem fled away, and she became the abode of strangers. She became a stranger to her own offspring, and her children forsook her.	38 Ils firent fuir les habitants de Jérusalem, qui devint un repaire d’étrangers; elle devint une étrangère pour ses fils, et ses enfants l’abandonnèrent.
39 Her sanctuary was as desolate as a wilderness; her feasts were turned into mourning, Her sabbaths to shame, her honor to contempt.	39 Son temple devint un désert, ses fêtes se changèrent en jours de deuil, ses sabbats furent tournés en dérision, au lieu du respect ce fut le mépris.
40 Her dishonor was as great as her glory had been, and her exalation was turned into mourning.	40 Sa honte fut aussi grande que sa gloire d’autrefois, sa grandeur fit place au deuil.
41 Then the king wrote to his whole kingdom that all should be one people,	41 Le roi donna ensuite des ordres pour que tous dans son empire ne fassent plus qu’un seul peuple:
42 each abandoning his particular customs. All the Gentiles conformed to the command of the king,	42 chacun devait renoncer à ses coutumes. Tous les païens se soumirent aux ordres du roi
43 and many Israelites were in favor of his religion; they sacrificed to idols and profaned the sabbath.	43 et même en Israël, beaucoup de gens firent bon accueil à son culte: ils sacrifiaient aux idoles et profanaient le sabbat.
44 The king sent messengers with letters to Jerusalem and to the cities of Judah, ordering them to follow customs foreign to their land;	44 Le roi envoya des messagers à Jérusalem et aux villes de Juda pour y porter ses ordres: il fallait désormais suivre des coutumes étrangères au pays,
45 to prohibit holocausts, sacrifices, and libations in the sanctuary, to profane the sabbaths and feast days,	45 faire cesser les holocaustes du Temple, les sacrifices et les libations. On devait profaner les sabbats et les fêtes,
46 to desecrate the sanctuary and the sacred ministers,	46 souiller le Sanctuaire et tout ce qui est saint,
47 to build pagan altars and temples and shrines, to sacrifice swine and unclean animals,	47 élever des autels, des lieux de culte et des temples pour les idoles, immoler des porcs et des animaux impurs.
48 to leave their sons uncircumcised, and to let themselves be defiled with every kind of impurity and abomination,	48 On devait laisser les fils sans circoncision et se rendre ainsi odieux par toute sorte d’impuretés et de profanations.
49 so that they might forget the law and change all their observances.	49 En un mot, on devait oublier la Loi et négliger toutes ses observances:
50 Whoever refused to act according to the command of the king should be put to death.	50 celui qui n’obéirait pas aux ordres du roi devait être mis à mort.
51 Such were the orders he published throughout his kingdom. He appointed inspectors over all the people, and he ordered the cities of Judah to offer sacrifices, each city in turn.	51 C’est ainsi que s’exprimaient les lettres du roi envoyées à tout son royaume; il établit des inspecteurs sur tout le peuple et ordonna à toutes les villes de Juda d’offrir des sacrifices.
52 Many of the people, those who abandoned the law, joined them and committed evil in the land.	52 Beaucoup de gens parmi le peuple obéirent, tous ceux qui abandonnaient la Loi; ils firent du mal dans le pays,
53 Israel was driven into hiding, wherever places of refuge could be found.	53 obligeant Israël à se chercher des refuges.
54 On the fifteenth day of the month Chislev, in the year one hundred and forty-five, the king erected the horrible abomination upon the altar of holocausts, and in the surrounding cities of Judah they built pagan altars.	54 Le quinzième jour du mois de Kisleu, en l’an 145, le roi dressa l’Abomination de la Désolation sur l’autel des holocaustes, et on éleva des autels dans les villes voisines de Juda.
55 They also burnt incense at the doors of houses and in the streets.	55 On brûlait de l’encens à la porte des maisons et sur les places,
56 Any scrolls of the law which they found they tore up and burnt.	56 on déchirait et on jetait au feu les livres de la Loi quand on les trouvait,
57 Whoever was found with a scroll of the covenant, and whoever observed the law, was condemned to death by royal decree.	57 et si l’on découvrait chez quelqu’un un livre de l’Alliance ou si quelqu’un obéissait à la Loi de Dieu, on le mettait à mort selon le décret du roi.
58 So they used their power against Israel, against those who were caught, each month, in the cities.	58 On punissait les Israélites que l’on prenait en contravention mois après mois dans leurs villes,
59 On the twenty-fifth day of each month they sacrificed on the altar erected over the altar of holocausts.	59 et le 25 de chaque mois on offrait des sacrifices sur l’autel élevé à la place de l’autel des holocaustes.
60 Women who had had their children circumcised were put to death, in keeping with the decree,	60 On mit à mort selon cette loi des femmes qui avaient fait circoncire leurs enfants,
61 with the babies hung from their necks; their families also and those who had circumcised them were killed.	61 avec leurs nourrissons pendus à leur cou; on mit à mort également les gens de leur famille et ceux qui avaient opéré la circoncision.
62 But many in Israel were determined and resolved in their hearts not to eat anything unclean;	62 Malgré tout cela, plusieurs en Israël restèrent fidèles et furent assez courageux pour ne pas manger des mets impurs.
63 they preferred to die rather than to be defiled with unclean food or to profane the holy covenant; and they did die. Terrible affliction was upon Israel.	63 Ils aimaient mieux mourir que de se rendre impurs avec des aliments qui contrevenaient à l’Alliance sainte, et de fait ils furent mis à mort.
	64 Ce fut une grande épreuve pour Israël.
