1 After Alexander the Macedonian, Philip's son, who came from the land of Kittim, had defeated Darius, king of the Persians and Medes, he became king in his place, having first ruled in Greece.	1 Queste cose avvennero dopo che Alessandro il Macedone, figlio di Filippo, uscito dalla regione dei Kittim sconfisse Dario, re dei Persiani e dei Medi, e regnò al suo posto, cominciando dalla Grecia.
2 He fought many campaigns, captured fortresses, and put kings to death.	2 Intraprese molte guerre, si impadronì di fortezze e uccise i re della terra;
3 He advanced to the ends of the earth, gathering plunder from many nations; the earth fell silent before him, and his heart became proud and arrogant.	3 arrivò sino ai confini della terra e raccolse le spoglie di molti popoli. La terra si ridusse al silenzio davanti a lui; il suo cuore si esaltò e si gonfiò di orgoglio.
4 He collected a very strong army and conquered provinces, nations, and rulers, and they became his tributaries.	4 Radunò forze ingenti e conquistò regioni, popoli e principi, che divennero suoi tributari.
5 But after all this he took to his bed, realizing that he was going to die.	5 Dopo questo cadde ammalato e comprese che stava per morire.
6 He therefore summoned his officers, the nobles, who had been brought up with him from his youth, to divide his kingdom among them while he was still alive.	6 Allora chiamò i suoi luogotenenti più importanti, che erano cresciuti con lui fin dalla giovinezza e mentre era ancora vivo divise tra di loro il suo impero.

10 There sprang from these a sinful offshoot, Antiochus Epiphanes, son of King Antiochus, once a hostage at Rome. He became king in the year one hundred and thirty-seven of the kingdom of the Greeks.	10 Uscì da quelli una radice perversa, Antioco Epìfane, figlio del re Antioco che era stato ostaggio a Roma, e assunse il regno nell'anno centotrentasette del dominio dei Greci.
11 In those days there appeared in Israel men who were breakers of the law, and they seduced many people, saying: "Let us go and make an alliance with the Gentiles all around us; since we separated from them, many evils have come upon us."	11 In quei giorni sorsero da Israele figli empi che persuasero molti dicendo: "Andiamo e facciamo lega con le nazioni che ci stanno attorno, perché da quando ci siamo separati da loro, ci sono capitati molti mali".
12 The proposal was agreeable;	12 Parve ottimo ai loro occhi questo ragionamento;
13 some from among the people promptly went to the king, and he authorized them to introduce the way of living of the Gentiles.	13 alcuni del popolo presero l'iniziativa e andarono dal re, che diede loro facoltà di introdurre le istituzioni dei pagani.

15 They covered over the mark of their circumcision and abandoned the holy covenant; they allied themselves with the Gentiles and sold themselves to wrongdoing.	15 e cancellarono i segni della circoncisione e si allontanarono dalla santa alleanza; si unirono alle nazioni pagane e si vendettero per fare il male.
16 When his kingdom seemed secure, Antiochus proposed to become king of Egypt, so as to rule over both kingdoms.	16 Quando il regno fu consolidato in mano di Antioco, egli volle conquistare l'Egitto per dominare due regni:
17 He invaded Egypt with a strong force, with chariots and elephants, and with a large fleet,	17 entrò nell'Egitto con un esercito imponente, con carri ed elefanti, con la cavalleria e una grande flotta
18 to make war on Ptolemy, king of Egypt. Ptolemy was frightened at his presence and fled, leaving many casualties.	18 e venne a battaglia con Tolomeo re di Egitto. Tolomeo fu travolto davanti a lui e dovette fuggire e molti caddero colpiti a morte.
19 The fortified cities in the land of Egypt were captured, and Antiochus plundered the land of Egypt.	19 Espugnarono le fortezze dell'Egitto e Antioco saccheggiò il paese di Egitto.
20 After Antiochus had defeated Egypt in the year one hundred and forty-three, he returned and went up to Israel and to Jerusalem with a strong force.	20 Ritornò quindi Antioco dopo aver sconfitto l'Egitto nell'anno centoquarantatré, si diresse contro Israele e mosse contro Gerusalemme con forze ingenti.

22 the offering table, the cups and the bowls, the golden censers, the curtain, the crowns, and the golden ornament on the facade of the temple. 24 Taking all this, he went back to his own country, after he had spoken with great arrogance and shed much blood.	24 quindi, raccolta ogni cosa, fece ritorno nella sua regione. Fece anche molte stragi e parlò con grande arroganza.
25 And there was great mourning for Israel, in every place where they dwelt,	25 Allora vi fu lutto grande per gli Israeliti in ogni loro regione.
26 and the rulers and the elders groaned. Virgins and young men languished, and the beauty of the women was disfigured.	26 Gemettero i capi e gli anziani, le vergini e i giovani persero vigore e la bellezza delle donne svanì.
27 Every bridegroom took up lamentation, she who sat in the bridal chamber mourned,	27 Ogni sposo levò il suo lamento e la sposa nel talamo fu in lutto.
28 And the land was shaken on account of its inhabitants, and all the house of Jacob was covered with shame.	28 Tremò la terra per i suoi abitanti e tutta la casa di Giacobbe si vestì di vergogna.

30 He spoke to them deceitfully in peaceful terms, and won their trust. 36 The citadel became an ambush against the sanctuary, and a wicked adversary to Israel at all times.	36 questo fu un'insidia per il santuario e un avversario maligno per Israele in ogni momento

38 Because of them the inhabitants of Jerusalem fled away, and she became the abode of strangers. 41 Then the king wrote to his whole kingdom that all should be one people,	41 Poi il re prescrisse con decreto a tutto il suo regno, che tutti formassero un sol popolo
42 each abandoning his particular customs. All the Gentiles conformed to the command of the king,	42 e ciascuno abbandonasse le proprie leggi. Tutti i popoli consentirono a fare secondo gli ordini del re.
43 and many Israelites were in favor of his religion; they sacrificed to idols and profaned the sabbath.	43 Anche molti Israeliti accettarono di servirlo e sacrificarono agli idoli e profanarono il sabato.
44 The king sent messengers with letters to Jerusalem and to the cities of Judah, ordering them to follow customs foreign to their land;	44 Il re spedì ancora decreti per mezzo di messaggeri a Gerusalemme e alle città di Giuda, ordinando di seguire usanze straniere al loro paese,

51 Such were the orders he published throughout his kingdom. He appointed inspectors over all the people, and he ordered the cities of Judah to offer sacrifices, each city in turn.	51 Secondo questi ordini scrisse a tutto il regno, stabilì ispettori su tutto il popolo e intimò alle città di Giuda di sacrificare città per città.
52 Many of the people, those who abandoned the law, joined them and committed evil in the land.	52 Anche molti del popolo si unirono a loro, tutti i traditori della legge, e commisero il male nella regione
53 Israel was driven into hiding, wherever places of refuge could be found.	53 e ridussero Israele a nascondersi in ogni possibile rifugio.
54 On the fifteenth day of the month Chislev, in the year one hundred and forty-five, the king erected the horrible abomination upon the altar of holocausts, and in the surrounding cities of Judah they built pagan altars.	54 Nell'anno centoquarantacinque, il quindici di Casleu il re innalzò sull'altare un idolo. 58 So they used their power against Israel, against those who were caught, each month, in the cities.	58 Con prepotenza trattavano gli Israeliti che venivano scoperti ogni mese nella città

63 they preferred to die rather than to be defiled with unclean food or to profane the holy covenant; and they did die. Terrible affliction was upon Israel.	63 e preferirono morire pur di non contaminarsi con quei cibi e non disonorare la santa alleanza; così appunto morirono.
	64 Sopra Israele fu così scatenata un'ira veramente grande.
