1 Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother, named Jehoaddan, was from Jerusalem.	1 Viginti quinque annorum erat Amasias cum regnare cœpisset, et viginti novem annis regnavit in Jerusalem : nomen matris ejus Joadan de Jerusalem.
2 He did what was pleasing in the sight of the LORD, though not wholeheartedly.	2 Fecitque bonum in conspectu Domini, verumtamen non in corde perfecto.
3 After he had strengthened his hold on the kingdom, he slew those of his servants who had killed the king, his father;	3 Cumque roboratum sibi videret imperium, jugulavit servos qui occiderant regem patrem suum,
4 but he did not put their children to death, for he acted according to what is written in the law, in the Book of Moses, as the LORD commanded: "Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children for their fathers; but only for his own guilt shall a man be put to death."	4 sed filios eorum non interfecit, sicut scriptum est in libro legis Moysi, ubi præcepit Dominus, dicens : Non occidentur patres pro filiis, neque filii pro patribus suis, sed unusquisque in suo peccato morietur.
5 Amaziah mustered Judah and placed them, out of all Judah and Benjamin according to their ancestral houses, under leaders of thousands and of hundreds. When he had counted those of twenty years and over, he found them to be three hundred thousand picked men fit for war, capable of handling lance and shield.	5 Congregavit igitur Amasias Judam, et constituit eos per familias, tribunosque et centuriones in universo Juda et Benjamin : et recensuit a viginti annis supra, invenitque trecenta millia juvenum qui egrederentur ad pugnam, et tenerent hastam et clypeum :
6 He also hired a hundred thousand valiant warriors from Israel for a hundred talents of silver.	6 mercede quoque conduxit de Israël centum millia robustorum, centum talentis argenti.
7 But a man of God came to him and said: "O king, let not the army of Israel go with you, for the LORD is not with Israel, with any Ephraimite.	7 Venit autem homo Dei ad illum, et ait : O rex, ne egrediatur tecum exercitus Israël : non est enim Dominus cum Israël, et cunctis filiis Ephraim :
8 Instead, go on your own, strongly prepared for the conflict; otherwise the LORD will defeat you in the face of the enemy. It is God who has the power to reinforce or to defeat."	8 quod si putas in robore exercitus bella consistere, superari te faciet Deus ab hostibus : Dei quippe est et adjuvare, et in fugam convertere.
9 Amaziah answered the man of God, "But what is to be done about the hundred talents that I paid for the troops of Israel?" The man of God replied, "The LORD can give you much more than that."	9 Dixitque Amasias ad hominem Dei : Quid ergo fiet de centum talentis, quæ dedi militibus Israël ? Et respondit ei homo Dei : Habet Dominus unde tibi dare possit multo his plura.
10 Amaziah then disbanded the troops that had come to him from Ephraim, and sent them home. They, however, became furiously angry with Judah, and returned home blazing with resentment.	10 Separavit itaque Amasias exercitum qui venerat ad eum ex Ephraim, ut reverteretur in locum suum : at illi contra Judam vehementer irati, reversi sunt in regionem suam.
11 Amaziah now assumed command of his army. They proceeded to the Valley of Salt, and there they killed ten thousand men of Seir.	11 Porro Amasias confidenter eduxit populum suum, et abiit in vallem Salinarum, percussitque filios Seir decem millia :
12 The Judahites also brought back another ten thousand alive, whom they led to the summit of the Rock and then cast down, so that they were all crushed.	12 et alia decem millia virorum ceperunt filii Juda, et adduxerunt ad præruptum cujusdam petræ, præcipitaveruntque eos de summo in præceps : qui universi crepuerunt.
13 Meanwhile, the mercenaries whom Amaziah had dismissed from battle service with him raided the cities of Judah from Samaria to Beth-horon. They killed three thousand of the inhabitants and took away much booty.	13 At ille exercitus quem remiserat Amasias ne secum iret ad prælium, diffusus est in civitatibus Juda, a Samaria usque ad Bethoron, et interfectis tribus millibus, diripuit prædam magnam.
14 When Amaziah returned from his conquest of the Edomites he brought back with him the gods of the people of Seir, which he set up as his own gods; he bowed down before them and offered sacrifice to them.	14 Amasias vero post cædem Idumæorum, et allatos deos filiorum Seir, statuit illos in deos sibi, et adorabat eos, et illis adolebat incensum.
15 Then the anger of the LORD blazed out against Amaziah, and he sent a prophet to him who said: "Why have you had recourse to this people's gods that could not save their own people from your hand?"	15 Quam ob rem iratus Dominus contra Amasiam misit ad illum prophetam, qui diceret ei : Cur adorasti deos qui non liberaverunt populum suum de manu tua ?
16 While he was still speaking, however, the king said to him: "Have you been made the king's counselor? Be silent! Why should it be necessary to kill you?" Therefore the prophet desisted. "I know, however," he said, "that God has let you take counsel to your own destruction, because you have done this thing and have refused to hear my counsel."	16 Cumque hæc ille loqueretur, respondit ei : Num consiliarius regis es ? quiesce, ne interficiam te. Discedensque propheta : Scio, inquit, quod cogitaverit Deus occidere te quia fecisti hoc malum, et insuper non acquievisti consilio meo.
17 Having taken counsel, King Amaziah of Judah sent messengers to Joash, son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, the king of Israel, saying, "Come, let us meet each other face to face."	17 Igitur Amasias rex Juda inito pessimo consilio, misit ad Joas filium Joachaz filii Jehu regem Israël, dicens : Veni, videamus nos mutuo.
18 King Joash of Israel sent this reply to King Amaziah of Judah: "The thistle of the Lebanon sent a message to the cedar of the Lebanon, saying, 'Give your daughter to my son for his wife.' But the wild beasts of the Lebanon passed by and trampled the thistle down.	18 At ille remisit nuntios, dicens : Carduus qui est in Libano misit ad cedrum Libani, dicens : Da filiam tuam filio meo uxorem : et ecce bestiæ quæ erant in silva Libani, transierunt, et conculcaverunt carduum.
19 You are thinking, 'See, I have beaten Edom!', and thus ambition makes you proud. Remain at home. Why involve yourself, and Judah with you, in misfortune and failure?"	19 Dixisti : Percussi Edom, et idcirco erigitur cor tuum in superbiam : sede in domo tua : cur malum adversum te provocas, ut cadas et tu, et Juda tecum ?
20 But Amaziah would not listen, for God had determined to hand them over because they had had recourse to the gods of Edom.	20 Noluit audire Amasias, eo quod Domini esset voluntas ut traderetur in manus hostium propter deos Edom.
21 Therefore King Joash of Israel advanced and he and King Amaziah met in battle at Beth-shemesh of Judah.	21 Ascendit igitur Joas rex Israël, et mutuos sibi præbuere conspectus : Amasias autem rex Juda erat in Bethsames Juda :
22 There Judah was defeated by Israel, and all the Judean soldiers fled homeward.	22 corruitque Juda coram Israël, et fugit in tabernacula sua.
23 King Joash of Israel captured Amaziah, king of Judah, son of Joash, son of Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh and brought him to Jerusalem. Then he tore down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate, a distance of four hundred cubits.	23 Porro Amasiam regem Juda, filium Joas filii Joachaz, cepit Joas rex Israël in Bethsames, et adduxit in Jerusalem : destruxitque murum ejus a porta Ephraim usque ad portam anguli quadringentis cubitis.
24 He took away all the gold and silver and all the vessels he found in the house of God with Obed-edom, together with the treasures of the palace, and hostages as well. Then he returned to Samaria.	24 Omne quoque aurum et argentum, et universa vasa quæ repererat in domo Dei, et apud Obededom in thesauris etiam domus regiæ, necnon et filios obsidum, reduxit in Samariam.
25 Amaziah, son of Joash, king of Judah, survived Joash, son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, by fifteen years.	25 Vixit autem Amasias filius Joas rex Juda, postquam mortuus est Joas filius Joachaz rex Israël, quindecim annis.
26 The rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, can be found written, as is well known, in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.	26 Reliqua autem sermonum Amasiæ priorum et novissimorum scripta sunt in libro regum Juda et Israël.
27 Now from the time that Amaziah ceased to follow the LORD, a conspiracy was formed against him in Jerusalem; hence he fled to Lachish. But they pursued him to Lachish and put him to death there.	27 Qui postquam recessit a Domino, tetenderunt ei insidias in Jerusalem. Cumque fugisset in Lachis, miserunt, et interfecerunt eum ibi.
28 They brought him back on horses and buried him with his ancestors in the City of Judah.	28 Reportantesque super equos, sepelierunt eum cum patribus suis in civitate David.
