2 Chronicles 25

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother, named Jehoaddan, was from Jerusalem.	1 Amasias devint roi à l'âge de 25 ans et régna 29 ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère s'appelaitYehoaddân, et était de Jérusalem.
2 He did what was pleasing in the sight of the LORD, though not wholeheartedly.	2 Il fit ce qui est agréable à Yahvé, non pas pourtant d'un coeur sans défaillance.
3 After he had strengthened his hold on the kingdom, he slew those of his servants who had killed the king, his father;	3 Lorsque le royaume se fut affermi sous son gouvernement, il mit à mort ceux de ses officiersqui avaient tué le roi son père.
4 but he did not put their children to death, for he acted according to what is written in the law, in the Book of Moses, as the LORD commanded: "Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children for their fathers; but only for his own guilt shall a man be put to death."	4 Mais il ne fit pas mourir leurs fils, car il est écrit dans la Loi, dans le livre de Moïse, queYahvé a prescrit: Les pères ne seront pas mis à mort pour les fils et les fils ne seront pas mis à mort pour lespères, mais chacun sera mis à mort pour son propre crime.
5 Amaziah mustered Judah and placed them, out of all Judah and Benjamin according to their ancestral houses, under leaders of thousands and of hundreds. When he had counted those of twenty years and over, he found them to be three hundred thousand picked men fit for war, capable of handling lance and shield.	5 Amasias réunit les Judéens et les constitua en familles avec officiers de milliers et decentaines pour tout Juda et Benjamin. Il recensa ceux qui avaient vingt ans et plus et il en trouva 300.000,hommes d'élite aptes à faire campagne, la lance et le bouclier au poing.
6 He also hired a hundred thousand valiant warriors from Israel for a hundred talents of silver.	6 Il enrôla ensuite comme mercenaires, pour cent talents d'argent, 100.000 preux vaillantsd'Israël.
7 But a man of God came to him and said: "O king, let not the army of Israel go with you, for the LORD is not with Israel, with any Ephraimite.	7 Un homme de Dieu vint alors le trouver et lui dit: "O Roi, il ne faut pas que les troupesd'Israël viennent se joindre à toi, car Yahvé n'est ni avec Israël ni avec aucun des Ephraïmites.
8 Instead, go on your own, strongly prepared for the conflict; otherwise the LORD will defeat you in the face of the enemy. It is God who has the power to reinforce or to defeat."	8 Car s'ils viennent, tu auras beau agir et combattre vaillamment, Dieu ne t'en fera pas moinstrébucher devant tes ennemis, car c'est en Dieu qu'est le pouvoir de soutenir et d'abattre."
9 Amaziah answered the man of God, "But what is to be done about the hundred talents that I paid for the troops of Israel?" The man of God replied, "The LORD can give you much more than that."	9 Amasias répondit à l'homme de Dieu: "Quoi! Et les cent talents que j'ai donnés à la trouped'Israélites" -- "Yahvé a de quoi te donner beaucoup plus que cela", dit l'homme de Dieu.
10 Amaziah then disbanded the troops that had come to him from Ephraim, and sent them home. They, however, became furiously angry with Judah, and returned home blazing with resentment.	10 Amasias détacha alors de la sienne la troupe qui lui était venue d'Ephraïm et la renvoyachez elle; ces gens furent très excités contre Juda et retournèrent chez eux fort en colère.
11 Amaziah now assumed command of his army. They proceeded to the Valley of Salt, and there they killed ten thousand men of Seir.	11 Amasias se décida à partir à la tête de ses troupes, il gagna la vallée du Sel et battit 10.000fils de Séïr.
12 The Judahites also brought back another ten thousand alive, whom they led to the summit of the Rock and then cast down, so that they were all crushed.	12 Les Judéens emmenèrent vivants 10.000 captifs qu'ils conduisirent au sommet de la Roche,d'où ils les précipitèrent; tous s'écrasèrent.
13 Meanwhile, the mercenaries whom Amaziah had dismissed from battle service with him raided the cities of Judah from Samaria to Beth-horon. They killed three thousand of the inhabitants and took away much booty.	13 Quant à la troupe qu'avait congédiée Amasias au lieu de l'emmener combattre avec lui, elleenvahit les villes de Juda, de Samarie à Bet-Horôn, battit une troupe de trois milliers et fit un grand pillage.
14 When Amaziah returned from his conquest of the Edomites he brought back with him the gods of the people of Seir, which he set up as his own gods; he bowed down before them and offered sacrifice to them.	14 Une fois rentré de sa campagne victorieuse contre les Edomites, Amasias introduisit lesdieux des fils de Séïr, en fit ses dieux, se prosterna devant eux et les encensa.
15 Then the anger of the LORD blazed out against Amaziah, and he sent a prophet to him who said: "Why have you had recourse to this people's gods that could not save their own people from your hand?"	15 La colère de Yahvé s'enflamma contre Amasias, il lui envoya un prophète qui lui dit:"Pourquoi recherches-tu les dieux de ce peuple, qui n'ont pu le sauver de ta main?"
16 While he was still speaking, however, the king said to him: "Have you been made the king's counselor? Be silent! Why should it be necessary to kill you?" Therefore the prophet desisted. "I know, however," he said, "that God has let you take counsel to your own destruction, because you have done this thing and have refused to hear my counsel."	16 Il lui parlait encore qu'Amasias l'interrompit: "T'avons-nous nommé conseiller du roi?Arrête-toi, si tu ne veux pas qu'on te frappe." Le prophète s'arrêta, puis il dit: "Je sais que Dieu a tenu conseilpour ta perte, puisque tu as agi ainsi et que tu n'as pas écouté mon conseil."
17 Having taken counsel, King Amaziah of Judah sent messengers to Joash, son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, the king of Israel, saying, "Come, let us meet each other face to face."	17 Après avoir tenu conseil, Amasias, roi de Juda, envoya dire à Joas, fils de Joachaz, fils deJéhu, roi d'Israël: "Viens et mesurons-nous!"
18 King Joash of Israel sent this reply to King Amaziah of Judah: "The thistle of the Lebanon sent a message to the cedar of the Lebanon, saying, 'Give your daughter to my son for his wife.' But the wild beasts of the Lebanon passed by and trampled the thistle down.	18 Joas, roi d'Israël, retourna ce message à Amasias, roi de Juda: "Le chardon du Liban mandaceci au cèdre du Liban: Donne ta fille pour femme à mon fils, mais les bêtes sauvages du Liban passèrent etfoulèrent le chardon.
19 You are thinking, 'See, I have beaten Edom!', and thus ambition makes you proud. Remain at home. Why involve yourself, and Judah with you, in misfortune and failure?"	19 Me voici vainqueur d'Edom, as-tu dit, et tu te montes la tête! Sois glorieux et restemaintenant chez toi. Pourquoi provoquer le malheur et amener ta chute et celle de Juda avec toi?"
20 But Amaziah would not listen, for God had determined to hand them over because they had had recourse to the gods of Edom.	20 Mais Amasias n'écouta pas; c'était le fait de Dieu qui voulait livrer ces gens-là pour avoirrecherché les dieux d'Edom.
21 Therefore King Joash of Israel advanced and he and King Amaziah met in battle at Beth-shemesh of Judah.	21 Joas, roi d'Israël, se mit en campagne. Ils se mesurèrent, lui et Amasias, roi de Juda, à Bet-Shémesh qui appartient à Juda.
22 There Judah was defeated by Israel, and all the Judean soldiers fled homeward.	22 Juda fut battu devant Israël et chacun s'enfuit à sa tente.
23 King Joash of Israel captured Amaziah, king of Judah, son of Joash, son of Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh and brought him to Jerusalem. Then he tore down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate, a distance of four hundred cubits.	23 Quant au roi de Juda, Amasias, fils de Joas, fils d'Ochozias, le roi d'Israël Joas le fitprisonnier à Bet-Shémesh et l'emmena à Jérusalem. Il fit une brèche au rempart de Jérusalem, depuis la ported'Ephraïm jusqu'à la porte de l'Angle, sur 400 coudées.
24 He took away all the gold and silver and all the vessels he found in the house of God with Obed-edom, together with the treasures of the palace, and hostages as well. Then he returned to Samaria.	24 Il prit tout l'or et l'argent, tout le mobilier qui se trouvait dans le Temple de Dieu chezObed-Edom, les trésors du palais royal, des otages, et retourna à Samarie.
25 Amaziah, son of Joash, king of Judah, survived Joash, son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, by fifteen years.	25 Amasias, fils de Joas, roi de Juda, vécut encore quinze ans après la mort de Joas, fils deJoachaz, roi d'Israël.
26 The rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, can be found written, as is well known, in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.	26 Le reste de l'histoire d'Amasias, du début à la fin, n'est-il pas écrit au livre des Rois de Judaet d'Israël?
27 Now from the time that Amaziah ceased to follow the LORD, a conspiracy was formed against him in Jerusalem; hence he fled to Lachish. But they pursued him to Lachish and put him to death there.	27 Après l'époque où Amasias se détourna de Yahvé, on trama contre lui un complot àJérusalem; il s'enfuit vers Lakish, mais on le fit poursuivre à Lakish et mettre à mort là-bas.
28 They brought him back on horses and buried him with his ancestors in the City of Judah.	28 On le transporta avec des chevaux et on l'enterra auprès de ses pères dans la Cité de David.
