1 Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother, named Jehoaddan, was from Jerusalem.	1 Amazia divenne re a venticinque anni e regnò ventinove anni in Gerusalemme. Il nome di sua madre era Ioaddan, da Gerusalemme.
2 He did what was pleasing in the sight of the LORD, though not wholeheartedly.	2 Fece ciò che è retto agli occhi del Signore, ma non con cuore perfetto.
3 After he had strengthened his hold on the kingdom, he slew those of his servants who had killed the king, his father;	3 Quando il regno fu rinsaldato nelle sue mani, egli uccise gli ufficiali che avevano assassinato il re, suo padre,
4 but he did not put their children to death, for he acted according to what is written in the law, in the Book of Moses, as the LORD commanded: "Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children for their fathers; but only for his own guilt shall a man be put to death."	4 ma non mise a morte i loro figli, perché sta scritto nel libro della legge di Mosè il comando del Signore: "I padri non moriranno per colpa dei figli e i figli non moriranno per colpa dei padri, ma ognuno morirà per il suo peccato".
5 Amaziah mustered Judah and placed them, out of all Judah and Benjamin according to their ancestral houses, under leaders of thousands and of hundreds. When he had counted those of twenty years and over, he found them to be three hundred thousand picked men fit for war, capable of handling lance and shield.	5 Amazia riunì il popolo di Giuda e lo distribuì secondo i casati, ponendo tutto Giuda e Beniamino sotto capi di migliaia e capi di centinaia. Poi fece un censimento di quanti avevano vent'anni e più. Trovò che c'erano trecentomila uomini scelti, atti alla guerra, che maneggiavano la lancia e lo scudo.
6 He also hired a hundred thousand valiant warriors from Israel for a hundred talents of silver.	6 Inoltre assoldò da Israele centomila prodi guerrieri per cento talenti d'argento.
7 But a man of God came to him and said: "O king, let not the army of Israel go with you, for the LORD is not with Israel, with any Ephraimite.	7 Allora gli si presentò un uomo di Dio che gli disse: "O re, l'esercito d'Israele non si unisca a te, poiché il Signore non è con Israele, con nessuno dei figli di Efraim.
8 Instead, go on your own, strongly prepared for the conflict; otherwise the LORD will defeat you in the face of the enemy. It is God who has the power to reinforce or to defeat."	8 Se egli viene, non ti gioverà essere forte in battaglia! Dio ti farà stramazzare davanti al nemico, perché Dio ha il potere di aiutare e di abbattere".
9 Amaziah answered the man of God, "But what is to be done about the hundred talents that I paid for the troops of Israel?" The man of God replied, "The LORD can give you much more than that."	9 Amazia rispose all'uomo di Dio: "Che ne sarà dei cento talenti che ho dato per l'esercito d'Israele?". L'uomo di Dio replicò: "Il Signore può darti molto di più di questo".
10 Amaziah then disbanded the troops that had come to him from Ephraim, and sent them home. They, however, became furiously angry with Judah, and returned home blazing with resentment.	10 Allora Amazia congedò l'esercito che si era unito a lui da Efraim perché se ne ritornasse a casa sua. Ma l'ira di costoro si accese vivamente contro Giuda e se ne ritornarono a casa propria pieni di sdegno.
11 Amaziah now assumed command of his army. They proceeded to the Valley of Salt, and there they killed ten thousand men of Seir.	11 Fattosi animo, Amazia si mise a capo del suo esercito conducendolo nella valle del Sale, dove sconfisse i figli di Seir in numero di diecimila.
12 The Judahites also brought back another ten thousand alive, whom they led to the summit of the Rock and then cast down, so that they were all crushed.	12 Quelli di Giuda ne fecero prigionieri diecimila vivi e, condottili sulla cima d'una roccia, li precipitarono giù: tutti si sfracellarono.
13 Meanwhile, the mercenaries whom Amaziah had dismissed from battle service with him raided the cities of Judah from Samaria to Beth-horon. They killed three thousand of the inhabitants and took away much booty.	13 Quanto agli uomini della schiera che Amazia aveva rimandato perché non partecipassero con lui alla battaglia, essi fecero incursioni nelle città di Giuda, da Samaria fino a Bet-Oròn, uccidendovi tremila persone e facendo un ricco bottino.
14 When Amaziah returned from his conquest of the Edomites he brought back with him the gods of the people of Seir, which he set up as his own gods; he bowed down before them and offered sacrifice to them.	14 Dopo che Amazia ritornò dalla strage compiuta sugli Edomiti, fece portare gli dèi dei figli di Seir e se li costituì come dèi, prostrandosi davanti a loro e offrendo loro incenso.
15 Then the anger of the LORD blazed out against Amaziah, and he sent a prophet to him who said: "Why have you had recourse to this people's gods that could not save their own people from your hand?"	15 Ma l'ira del Signore si accese contro Amazia e gli mandò un profeta per dirgli: "Perché ti sei rivolto agli dèi, che non sono stati capaci di liberare il loro popolo dalla tua mano?".
16 While he was still speaking, however, the king said to him: "Have you been made the king's counselor? Be silent! Why should it be necessary to kill you?" Therefore the prophet desisted. "I know, however," he said, "that God has let you take counsel to your own destruction, because you have done this thing and have refused to hear my counsel."	16 Mentre stava ancora parlando, il re lo interruppe: "Forse ti abbiamo costituito consigliere del re? Smettila! Perché ti si dovrebbe uccidere!". Il profeta smise, ma poi disse: "So che Dio ha deciso di distruggerti, perché hai fatto questo e non hai prestato ascolto al mio consiglio".
17 Having taken counsel, King Amaziah of Judah sent messengers to Joash, son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, the king of Israel, saying, "Come, let us meet each other face to face."	17 Preso consiglio, Amazia, re di Giuda, mandò a dire a Ioas, figlio di Ioacaz, figlio di Ieu, re d'Israele: "Orsù, affrontiamoci!".
18 King Joash of Israel sent this reply to King Amaziah of Judah: "The thistle of the Lebanon sent a message to the cedar of the Lebanon, saying, 'Give your daughter to my son for his wife.' But the wild beasts of the Lebanon passed by and trampled the thistle down.	18 Ma Ioas, re d'Israele, inviò questa risposta ad Amazia, re di Giuda: "Il cardo del Libano mandò a dire al cedro del Libano: Da' la tua figlia in moglie a mio figlio. Ma una bestia selvatica del Libano, passando, calpestò il cardo.
19 You are thinking, 'See, I have beaten Edom!', and thus ambition makes you proud. Remain at home. Why involve yourself, and Judah with you, in misfortune and failure?"	19 Tu ti sei detto: "Ecco, ho sconfitto Edom", e il tuo cuore ti spinge ad inorgoglirti. Ora stattene a casa tua. Perché vorresti provocare una sciagura e cadere tu e Giuda con te?".
20 But Amaziah would not listen, for God had determined to hand them over because they had had recourse to the gods of Edom.	20 Ma Amazia non prestò ascolto; del resto era volontà di Dio che fossero consegnati nelle mani del nemico, perché si erano rivolti agli dèi di Edom.
21 Therefore King Joash of Israel advanced and he and King Amaziah met in battle at Beth-shemesh of Judah.	21 Ioas, re d'Israele, si mise in marcia e ambedue, lui e Amazia, re di Giuda, si scontrarono a faccia a faccia a Bet-Semes, che appartiene a Giuda.
22 There Judah was defeated by Israel, and all the Judean soldiers fled homeward.	22 Giuda fu sconfitto davanti a Israele e ognuno fuggì nella sua tenda.
23 King Joash of Israel captured Amaziah, king of Judah, son of Joash, son of Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh and brought him to Jerusalem. Then he tore down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate, a distance of four hundred cubits.	23 Ioas, re d'Israele, fece prigioniero a Bet-Semes Amazia, re di Giuda, figlio di Ioas, figlio di Acazia. Condottolo a Gerusalemme, aprì una breccia nelle mura di Gerusalemme, dalla porta di Efraim fino alla porta dell'Angolo, per quattrocento cubiti.
24 He took away all the gold and silver and all the vessels he found in the house of God with Obed-edom, together with the treasures of the palace, and hostages as well. Then he returned to Samaria.	24 Prese tutto l'oro, l'argento e tutti gli oggetti che si trovavano nel tempio di Dio, affidati a Obed-Edom, i tesori del palazzo reale e alcuni ostaggi; quindi ritornò in Samaria.
25 Amaziah, son of Joash, king of Judah, survived Joash, son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, by fifteen years.	25 Dopo la morte di Ioas, figlio di Ioacaz, re d'Israele, Amazia, figlio di Ioas, re di Giuda, visse ancora quindici anni.
26 The rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, can be found written, as is well known, in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.	26 Il resto delle imprese di Amazia, le prime come le ultime, non sono forse scritte nel libro dei re di Giuda e d'Israele?
27 Now from the time that Amaziah ceased to follow the LORD, a conspiracy was formed against him in Jerusalem; hence he fled to Lachish. But they pursued him to Lachish and put him to death there.	27 Dopo che Amazia si era allontanato dal Signore, si organizzò una congiura contro di lui in Gerusalemme. Egli fuggì a Lachis, ma fu inseguito a Lachis e quivi ucciso.
28 They brought him back on horses and buried him with his ancestors in the City of Judah.	28 Lo caricarono su cavalli e lo seppellirono con i suoi padri nella Città di Davide.
