1 Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother, named Jehoaddan, was from Jerusalem.	1 Amasias devint roi à l’âge de 25 ans et il régna 29 ans à Jérusalem; sa mère s’appelait Yohaddan, elle était de Jérusalem.
2 He did what was pleasing in the sight of the LORD, though not wholeheartedly.	2 Il fit ce qui est juste au regard de Yahvé, mais non sans quelques faiblesses.
3 After he had strengthened his hold on the kingdom, he slew those of his servants who had killed the king, his father;	3 Lorsqu’il eut bien en main le pouvoir, il tua les serviteurs qui avaient mis à mort le roi, son père.
4 but he did not put their children to death, for he acted according to what is written in the law, in the Book of Moses, as the LORD commanded: "Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children for their fathers; but only for his own guilt shall a man be put to death."	4 Mais il ne mit pas à mort leurs fils, selon le commandement de la Loi de Yahvé où il est écrit: “Les pères ne seront pas mis à mort pour les fils et les fils ne mourront pas pour les pères: chacun mourra pour son propre péché.”
5 Amaziah mustered Judah and placed them, out of all Judah and Benjamin according to their ancestral houses, under leaders of thousands and of hundreds. When he had counted those of twenty years and over, he found them to be three hundred thousand picked men fit for war, capable of handling lance and shield.	5 Amasias rassembla les hommes de Juda et les organisa par familles, avec des chefs de mille et des chefs de cent, dans tout le territoire de Juda et de Benjamin. Il recensa tous ceux de plus de 20 ans; il trouva 300 000 hommes de guerre portant la lance et le bouclier et entraînés au combat.
6 He also hired a hundred thousand valiant warriors from Israel for a hundred talents of silver.	6 Pour 100 talents d’argent il loua en Israël 100 000 soldats entraînés.
7 But a man of God came to him and said: "O king, let not the army of Israel go with you, for the LORD is not with Israel, with any Ephraimite.	7 Mais un homme de Dieu vint le trouver et lui dit: “Ô roi! Ne prends pas avec toi une armée d’Israël: Yahvé n’est pas avec Israël, avec tous ces fils d’Éphraïm!
8 Instead, go on your own, strongly prepared for the conflict; otherwise the LORD will defeat you in the face of the enemy. It is God who has the power to reinforce or to defeat."	8 Si tu la prends, Dieu te fera trébucher devant l’ennemi, même si tu es courageux au combat: Dieu seul est la force qui vient en aide ou qui fait trébucher!”
9 Amaziah answered the man of God, "But what is to be done about the hundred talents that I paid for the troops of Israel?" The man of God replied, "The LORD can give you much more than that."	9 Amasias répondit à l’homme de Dieu: “Que vais-je faire des 100 talents que j’ai donnés pour cette armée d’Israël?” L’homme de Dieu lui dit: “Yahvé a de quoi te donner beaucoup plus que cela.”
10 Amaziah then disbanded the troops that had come to him from Ephraim, and sent them home. They, however, became furiously angry with Judah, and returned home blazing with resentment.	10 Amasias laissa donc de côté l’armée qui était venue d’Éphraïm et la renvoya chez elle, mais ces hommes étaient furieux contre Juda et ils s’en retournèrent chez eux rouges de colère.
11 Amaziah now assumed command of his army. They proceeded to the Valley of Salt, and there they killed ten thousand men of Seir.	11 Plein d’ardeur, Amasias emmena son peuple et gagna la vallée du Sel; il écrasa là 10 000 hommes parmi les fils de Séïr.
12 The Judahites also brought back another ten thousand alive, whom they led to the summit of the Rock and then cast down, so that they were all crushed.	12 Les Judéens ramenèrent 10 000 prisonniers et les conduisirent au sommet de La Roche; du sommet de La Roche, ils les jetèrent en bas où tous se brisèrent.
13 Meanwhile, the mercenaries whom Amaziah had dismissed from battle service with him raided the cities of Judah from Samaria to Beth-horon. They killed three thousand of the inhabitants and took away much booty.	13 Pendant ce temps, les mercenaires qu’Amasias avait renvoyés sans leur permettre d’aller avec lui au combat, se jetèrent sur les villes de Juda, depuis Samarie jusqu’à Beth-Horon; ils massacrèrent 3 000 hommes et emportèrent un grand butin.
14 When Amaziah returned from his conquest of the Edomites he brought back with him the gods of the people of Seir, which he set up as his own gods; he bowed down before them and offered sacrifice to them.	14 Au retour de sa campagne contre les Édomites, Amasias rapporta les dieux des gens de Séïr. Il en fit ses propres dieux, il se prosterna devant eux et fit fumer de l’encens.
15 Then the anger of the LORD blazed out against Amaziah, and he sent a prophet to him who said: "Why have you had recourse to this people's gods that could not save their own people from your hand?"	15 Yahvé se mit en colère contre Amasias et lui envoya un prophète pour lui dire: “Pourquoi t’es-tu adressé aux dieux de ce peuple: ils n’ont même pas été capables de le sauver de ta main?”
16 While he was still speaking, however, the king said to him: "Have you been made the king's counselor? Be silent! Why should it be necessary to kill you?" Therefore the prophet desisted. "I know, however," he said, "that God has let you take counsel to your own destruction, because you have done this thing and have refused to hear my counsel."	16 Mais le roi répondit à ces paroles: “Est-ce que nous t’avons choisi comme conseiller du roi? Garde tes réflexions pour toi, ou bien veux-tu que l’on te frappe?” Le prophète se tut, mais non sans ajouter: “Après avoir fait cela, tu n’as pas écouté mon avertissement; je vois donc que Dieu a décidé ta perte.”
17 Having taken counsel, King Amaziah of Judah sent messengers to Joash, son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, the king of Israel, saying, "Come, let us meet each other face to face."	17 Après avoir pris conseil, Amasias roi de Juda envoya dire à Joas fils de Yoacaz, fils de Jéhu, roi d’Israël: “Viens te mesurer avec moi!”
18 King Joash of Israel sent this reply to King Amaziah of Judah: "The thistle of the Lebanon sent a message to the cedar of the Lebanon, saying, 'Give your daughter to my son for his wife.' But the wild beasts of the Lebanon passed by and trampled the thistle down.	18 Joas, roi d’Israël envoya dire à Amasias, roi de Juda: “L’épine du Liban envoya dire au cèdre du Liban: ‘Donne ta fille pour qu’elle soit l’épouse de mon fils.’ Mais une bête sauvage du Liban passa, qui piétina l’épine.
19 You are thinking, 'See, I have beaten Edom!', and thus ambition makes you proud. Remain at home. Why involve yourself, and Judah with you, in misfortune and failure?"	19 Tu te dis: ‘J’ai écrasé Édom’, et tu en es très fier. Reste donc chez toi, pourquoi attirer le malheur et la ruine sur toi, et sur Juda avec toi?”
20 But Amaziah would not listen, for God had determined to hand them over because they had had recourse to the gods of Edom.	20 Mais Amasias n’écouta pas. Cela venait de Dieu, il voulait les livrer parce qu’ils avaient recherché les dieux d’Édom.
21 Therefore King Joash of Israel advanced and he and King Amaziah met in battle at Beth-shemesh of Judah.	21 Joas roi d’Israël monta donc et ils se mesurèrent, lui et Amasias roi de Juda, à Beth-Chémech, dans le territoire de Juda.
22 There Judah was defeated by Israel, and all the Judean soldiers fled homeward.	22 Juda fut battu par Israël et chacun s’enfuit vers sa tente.
23 King Joash of Israel captured Amaziah, king of Judah, son of Joash, son of Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh and brought him to Jerusalem. Then he tore down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate, a distance of four hundred cubits.	23 Joas roi d’Israël fit prisonnier à Beth-Chémech Amasias roi de Juda, fils de Joas, fils d’Okozias. Il l’emmena à Jérusalem et il abattit le rempart de Jérusalem sur une centaine de mètres, depuis la porte d’Éphraïm jusqu’à la porte de l’Angle.
24 He took away all the gold and silver and all the vessels he found in the house of God with Obed-edom, together with the treasures of the palace, and hostages as well. Then he returned to Samaria.	24 Il ramassa tout l’or, tout l’argent et tout le mobilier qui se trouvaient dans la Maison de Dieu, chez Obed-Édom; il prit les trésors du palais royal et des otages, puis il repartit à Samarie.
25 Amaziah, son of Joash, king of Judah, survived Joash, son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, by fifteen years.	25 Amasias fils de Joas, roi de Juda, vécut encore 15 ans après la mort de Joas fils de Yoacaz, roi d’Israël.
26 The rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, can be found written, as is well known, in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.	26 Le reste des actes d’Amasias depuis les premiers jusqu’aux derniers, cela n’est-il pas écrit dans le Livre des Rois de Juda et d’Israël?
27 Now from the time that Amaziah ceased to follow the LORD, a conspiracy was formed against him in Jerusalem; hence he fled to Lachish. But they pursued him to Lachish and put him to death there.	27 Après l’époque où Amasias s’écarta de Yahvé, une conspiration s’organisa contre lui à Jérusalem; il prit la fuite pour Lakish, mais on le poursuivit jusqu’à Lakish, et là il fut mis à mort.
28 They brought him back on horses and buried him with his ancestors in the City of Judah.	28 On le ramena avec des chevaux, et on l’enterra avec ses pères dans la Cité de David.
