1 Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother, named Jehoaddan, was from Jerusalem.	1 - Amasia aveva venticinque anni quando cominciò a regnare e ne regnò ventinove in Gerusalemme. La madre sua ebbe nome Joadan di Gerusalemme.
2 He did what was pleasing in the sight of the LORD, though not wholeheartedly.	2 Egli si comportò bene al cospetto del Signore, ma con cuore non del tutto perfetto.
3 After he had strengthened his hold on the kingdom, he slew those of his servants who had killed the king, his father;	3 Vistosi assicurato il regno fece strangolare i servi che avevano ucciso il re suo padre.
4 but he did not put their children to death, for he acted according to what is written in the law, in the Book of Moses, as the LORD commanded: "Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children for their fathers; but only for his own guilt shall a man be put to death."	4 Non uccise però i figli loro, attenendosi a quanto è scritto nel libro della legge di Mosè, ove il Signore ordinò: «Non siano uccisi i padri per i loro figli, nè i figli per i padri loro, ma ognuno sia messo a morte per il proprio peccato».
5 Amaziah mustered Judah and placed them, out of all Judah and Benjamin according to their ancestral houses, under leaders of thousands and of hundreds. When he had counted those of twenty years and over, he found them to be three hundred thousand picked men fit for war, capable of handling lance and shield.	5 Amasia riunì quindi Giuda, e lo distribuì secondo le famiglie, e i tribuni e i centurioni, per tutto Giuda e Beniamino, e fece il censimento da vent'anni in su e trovò trecentomila giovani atti a entrare in guerra e a tenere la lancia e lo scudo.
6 He also hired a hundred thousand valiant warriors from Israel for a hundred talents of silver.	6 Di più al prezzo di cento talenti d'argento assoldò centomila uomini valorosi di Israele.
7 But a man of God came to him and said: "O king, let not the army of Israel go with you, for the LORD is not with Israel, with any Ephraimite.	7 Venne poi a lui un uomo di Dio, e gli disse: «Non venga teco, o re, l'esercito d'Israele, poichè il Signore non è con Israele, e con tutti i figli di Efraim.
8 Instead, go on your own, strongly prepared for the conflict; otherwise the LORD will defeat you in the face of the enemy. It is God who has the power to reinforce or to defeat."	8 Che se tu pensi di vincere le guerre con un esercito valoroso, Dio farà sì che tu sia vinto dal nemico; poichè sta a Dio porgere aiuto o mettere in fuga».
9 Amaziah answered the man of God, "But what is to be done about the hundred talents that I paid for the troops of Israel?" The man of God replied, "The LORD can give you much more than that."	9 Amasia così rispose all'uomo di Dio: «Che fare allora dei cento talenti, pagati ai soldati d'Israele?». E l'uomo di Dio soggiunse: «Il Signore ha di che darti assai più di questi».
10 Amaziah then disbanded the troops that had come to him from Ephraim, and sent them home. They, however, became furiously angry with Judah, and returned home blazing with resentment.	10 Allora Amasia licenziò l'esercito, che era venuto a lui da Efraim, perchè se ne ritornasse a casa; e questi uomini si irritarono grandemente contro Giuda e se ne tornarono al loro paese.
11 Amaziah now assumed command of his army. They proceeded to the Valley of Salt, and there they killed ten thousand men of Seir.	11 Amasia allora pieno di fiducia condusse fuori il suo popolo e andò nella Valle delle Saline e sbaragliò diecimila figli di Seir.
12 The Judahites also brought back another ten thousand alive, whom they led to the summit of the Rock and then cast down, so that they were all crushed.	12 Altri diecimila uomini catturarono i figli di Giuda, i quali li condussero sopra un masso scosceso e li precipitarono dall'alto in basso, sicchè tutti rimasero sfracellati.
13 Meanwhile, the mercenaries whom Amaziah had dismissed from battle service with him raided the cities of Judah from Samaria to Beth-horon. They killed three thousand of the inhabitants and took away much booty.	13 L'esercito poi che era stato rimandato da Amasia, perchè non venisse seco alla guerra, si sparse nelle città di Giuda, tra Samaria e Betoron, e uccise tremila persone, riportò un gran bottino.
14 When Amaziah returned from his conquest of the Edomites he brought back with him the gods of the people of Seir, which he set up as his own gods; he bowed down before them and offered sacrifice to them.	14 Tornato Amasia dalla strage degli Idumei, portando seco gli dèi dei figli di Seir, costituì questi come sue divinità, li adorò e bruciò dinanzi a loro incenso.
15 Then the anger of the LORD blazed out against Amaziah, and he sent a prophet to him who said: "Why have you had recourse to this people's gods that could not save their own people from your hand?"	15 Per il che il Signore si sdegnò contro Amasia e gli mandò un profeta a dirgli: «Perchè hai adorato gli dèi che non han potuto liberare il loro popolo dalle tue mani?».
16 While he was still speaking, however, the king said to him: "Have you been made the king's counselor? Be silent! Why should it be necessary to kill you?" Therefore the prophet desisted. "I know, however," he said, "that God has let you take counsel to your own destruction, because you have done this thing and have refused to hear my counsel."	16 Mentre egli parlava al re, questi gli chiese: «Sei tu forse il consigliere del re? Sta' tranquillo, altrimenti ti farò morire». Andandosene il profeta, soggiunse: «So bene che il Signore pensò di ucciderti, perchè hai fatto questo male, e ancora perchè non hai dato retta al mio consiglio».
17 Having taken counsel, King Amaziah of Judah sent messengers to Joash, son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, the king of Israel, saying, "Come, let us meet each other face to face."	17 Amasia, re di Giuda, allora ebbe la cattiva idea di mandare a dire a Joas, figlio di Joacaz, figlio di Jeu, re d'Israele: «Vieni a trovarmi».
18 King Joash of Israel sent this reply to King Amaziah of Judah: "The thistle of the Lebanon sent a message to the cedar of the Lebanon, saying, 'Give your daughter to my son for his wife.' But the wild beasts of the Lebanon passed by and trampled the thistle down.	18 Ma egli gli rimandò i messaggeri con queste parole: «Il cardo, che sta nel Libano, mandò al cedro del Libano e gli disse: -Da' la tua figlia in moglie al figliuol mio; ed ecco le bestie che erano nel bosco del Libano passare e calpestare il cardo. -
19 You are thinking, 'See, I have beaten Edom!', and thus ambition makes you proud. Remain at home. Why involve yourself, and Judah with you, in misfortune and failure?"	19 Tu ti sei detto: - Ho sconfitto gli Idumei, - e perciò il tuo cuore si levò in superbia; stattene a casa. Perchè provocare contro di te delle sventure e cadere tu e Giuda insieme con te?».
20 But Amaziah would not listen, for God had determined to hand them over because they had had recourse to the gods of Edom.	20 Amasia non volle dare ascolto, perchè era volontà del Signore di darlo nelle mani de' suoi nemici a cagione degli dèi di Edom.
21 Therefore King Joash of Israel advanced and he and King Amaziah met in battle at Beth-shemesh of Judah.	21 Joas, re d'Israele, salì e si trovarono di faccia l'uno all'altro: Amasia re di Giuda poi se ne stava in Betsames di Giuda.
22 There Judah was defeated by Israel, and all the Judean soldiers fled homeward.	22 Giuda cedette di fronte a Israele e fuggì alle sue tende,
23 King Joash of Israel captured Amaziah, king of Judah, son of Joash, son of Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh and brought him to Jerusalem. Then he tore down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate, a distance of four hundred cubits.	23 mentre Joas, re di Israele, fece prigioniero Amasia, re di Giuda, figlio di Joas, figlio di Joacaz, in Betsames e lo condusse in Gerusalemme, dove distrusse quattrocento cubiti di mura della città, dalla porta di Efraim fino alla porta dell'angolo:
24 He took away all the gold and silver and all the vessels he found in the house of God with Obed-edom, together with the treasures of the palace, and hostages as well. Then he returned to Samaria.	24 di più [prese] tutto l'oro e l'argento e tutti gli altri oggetti trovati nella casa di Dio e presso Obededom e nei tesori del palazzo reale; e condusse in Samaria anche i figli degli ostaggi.
25 Amaziah, son of Joash, king of Judah, survived Joash, son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, by fifteen years.	25 Visse poi Amasia, figlio di Joas, re di Giuda, dopo la morte di Joas, figlio di Joacaz, re d'Israele, quindici anni.
26 The rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, can be found written, as is well known, in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.	26 Il rimanente poi delle azioni di Amasia, sia le prime che le ultime, sono descritte nel libro dei re di Giuda e d'Israele.
27 Now from the time that Amaziah ceased to follow the LORD, a conspiracy was formed against him in Jerusalem; hence he fled to Lachish. But they pursued him to Lachish and put him to death there.	27 Dopo essersi allontanato dal Signore, fu ordita contro di lui una congiura in Gerusalemme; e mentre se ne fuggiva a Lachis lo fecero inseguire e là fu messo a morte.
28 They brought him back on horses and buried him with his ancestors in the City of Judah.	28 E, riportatolo su dei cavalli lo seppellirono coi padri suoi nella città di Davide.
