1 Thus the heavens and the earth and all their array were completed.	1 Così furono terminati il cielo e la terra e tutto il loro esercito.
2 Since on the seventh day God was finished with the work he had been doing, he rested on the seventh day from all the work he had undertaken.	2 Allora Dio nel settimo giorno volle concluso il lavoro che aveva fatto e cessò nel settimo giorno da ogni lavoro che aveva fatto.
3 So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work he had done in creation.	3 Dio benedisse il settimo giorno e lo consacrò, perché in esso aveva cessato da tutto il lavoro che Dio aveva fatto creando.
4 Such is the story of the heavens and the earth at their creation. At the time when the LORD God made the earth and the heavens--	4 Questa è la storia dell’origine del cielo e della terra, quando vennero creati. Nel giorno in cui Jahvè Dio fece la terra e il cielo,
5 while as yet there was no field shrub on earth and no grass of the field had sprouted, for the LORD God had sent no rain upon the earth and there was no man to till the soil,	5 quando ancora nessun cespuglio della steppa era sulla terra, quando ancora nessuna graminacea della campagna era spuntata, — perché Jahvè Dio non aveva fatto piovere sulla terra e non c’era alcun uomo che lavorasse il suolo
6 but a stream was welling up out of the earth and was watering all the surface of the ground--	6 e che facesse salire dalla terra l’acqua dei canali e irrigasse tutta la superficie del suolo —,
7 the LORD God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so man became a living being.	7 allora Jahvè Dio plasmò l’uomo con la polvere del suolo e soffiò nelle sue narici un alito di vita; così l’uomo divenne un essere vivente.
8 Then the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and he placed there the man whom he had formed.	8 Poi Jahvè Dio piantò un giardino nell’Eden, a oriente, e vi collocò l’uomo che aveva modellato.
9 Out of the ground the LORD God made various trees grow that were delightful to look at and good for food, with the tree of life in the middle of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and bad.	9 Jahvè Dio fece spuntare da suolo ogni sorta di alberi piacevoli a vedersi e buoni da mangiare, l’albero della vita in mezzo al giardino e l’albero della conoscenza del bene e del male.
10 A river rises in Eden to water the garden; beyond there it divides and becomes four branches.	10 C’era un fiume che usciva dall’Eden per irrigare il giardino, poi di lì si divideva e veniva a formare quattro bracci.
11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it is the one that winds through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.	11 Il primo si chiama Pishon: è quello che gira intorno a tutta la terra di Havila dove c’è l’oro —
12 The gold of that land is excellent; bdellium and lapis lazuli are also there.	12 e l’oro di quella terra è fino — là c’è il bdellio e la pietra d’onice.
13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it is the one that winds all through the land of Cush.	13 Il secondo si chiama Ghihon: è quello che gira intorno a tutta la terra di Chush.
14 The name of the third river is the Tigris; it is the one that flows east of Asshur. The fourth river is the Euphrates.	14 Il terzo fiume si chiama Tigri: è quello che scorre a oriente di Assur. Il quarto fiume è l’Eufrate.
15 The LORD God then took the man and settled him in the garden of Eden, to cultivate and care for it.	15 Jahvè Dio prese dunque l’uomo e lo pose nel giardino dell’Eden perché lo coltivasse e lo custodisse.
16 The LORD God gave man this order: "You are free to eat from any of the trees of the garden	16 E Jahvè Dio comandò all’uomo: «Di tutti gli alberi del giardino tu puoi mangiare;
17 except the tree of knowledge of good and bad. From that tree you shall not eat; the moment you eat from it you are surely doomed to die."	17 ma dell’albero della conoscenza del bene e del male non devi mangiare, perché nel giorno in cui ne mangerai, dovrai certamente morire».
18 The LORD God said: "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him."	18 Poi Jahvè Dio disse: «Non è bene che l’uomo sia solo: gli voglio fare un aiuto che sia simile a lui».
19 So the LORD God formed out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of the air, and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them; whatever the man called each of them would be its name.	19 Allora Jahvè Dio plasmò ancora dal suolo tutte le bestie selvatiche e tutti i volatili del cielo e li condusse all’uomo, per vedere come li avrebbe chiamati: in qualunque modo l’uomo avrebbe chiamato gli esseri viventi, quello doveva essere il loro nome.
20 The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of the air, and all the wild animals; but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man.	20 Così l’uomo impose nomi a tutto il bestiame, a tutti i volatili del cielo e a tutte le bestie selvatiche, ma per l’uomo non trovò un aiuto che fosse simile a lui.
21 So the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man, and while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.	21 Allora Jahvè Dio fece cadere un sonno profondo sull’uomo che si addormentò, poi gli tolse una delle costole e rinchiuse la carne al suo posto.
22 The LORD God then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from the man. When he brought her to the man,	22 E Jahvè Dio costruì la costola che aveva tolto all’uomo e ne formò una donna. Poi la condusse all’uomo.
23 the man said: "This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; This one shall be called 'woman,' for out of 'her man' this one has been taken."	23 Allora l’uomo disse. «Questa volta è osso delle mie ossa e carne della mia carne! Costei si chiamerà donna perché dall’uomo fu tratta costei».
24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one body.	24 Perciò l'uomo abbandona il padre e la madre e si unisce alla sua donna e i due diventano una sola carne.
25 The man and his wife were both naked, yet they felt no shame.	25 Ora ambedue erano nudi, l’uomo e la sua donna, ma non sentivano mutua vergogna.
