NEW AMERICAN BIBLEKING JAMES BIBLE
Thus the heavens and the earth and all their array were completed.1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
Since on the seventh day God was finished with the work he had been doing, he rested on the seventh day from all the work he had undertaken.2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work he had done in creation.3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
Such is the story of the heavens and the earth at their creation. At the time when the LORD God made the earth and the heavens--4 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,
while as yet there was no field shrub on earth and no grass of the field had sprouted, for the LORD God had sent no rain upon the earth and there was no man to till the soil,5 And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.
but a stream was welling up out of the earth and was watering all the surface of the ground--6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.
the LORD God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so man became a living being.7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Then the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and he placed there the man whom he had formed.8 And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
Out of the ground the LORD God made various trees grow that were delightful to look at and good for food, with the tree of life in the middle of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and bad.9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
A river rises in Eden to water the garden; beyond there it divides and becomes four branches.10 And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads.
The name of the first is the Pishon; it is the one that winds through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.11 The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold;
The gold of that land is excellent; bdellium and lapis lazuli are also there.12 And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone.
The name of the second river is the Gihon; it is the one that winds all through the land of Cush.13 And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia.
The name of the third river is the Tigris; it is the one that flows east of Asshur. The fourth river is the Euphrates.14 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates.
The LORD God then took the man and settled him in the garden of Eden, to cultivate and care for it.15 And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
The LORD God gave man this order: "You are free to eat from any of the trees of the garden16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
except the tree of knowledge of good and bad. From that tree you shall not eat; the moment you eat from it you are surely doomed to die."17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
The LORD God said: "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him."18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
So the LORD God formed out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of the air, and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them; whatever the man called each of them would be its name.19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.
The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of the air, and all the wild animals; but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man.20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.
So the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man, and while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
The LORD God then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from the man. When he brought her to the man,22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
the man said: "This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; This one shall be called 'woman,' for out of 'her man' this one has been taken."23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one body.24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
The man and his wife were both naked, yet they felt no shame.25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
