1 Thus the heavens and the earth and all their array were completed.	1 Così furon compiuti i cieli e la terra e tutto il loro ornato.
2 Since on the seventh day God was finished with the work he had been doing, he rested on the seventh day from all the work he had undertaken.	2 E Dio nel settimo giorno compì l'opera ehe aveva fatta, e nel settimo giorno si riposò da tutte le opere che aveva fatte.
3 So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work he had done in creation.	3 E il settimo giorno lo benedisse e santificò, perchè in esso si era riposato da ogni sua opera che creando aveva fatta.
4 Such is the story of the heavens and the earth at their creation. At the time when the LORD God made the earth and the heavens--	4 Queste son le origini del cielo e della terra, allorché furon creati, quando il Signore Dio fece il cielo e la terra,
5 while as yet there was no field shrub on earth and no grass of the field had sprouted, for the LORD God had sent no rain upon the earth and there was no man to till the soil,	5 e ogni pianta del campo, avanti che nascesse sulla terra, e ogni erba della campagna, prima che spuntasse, perchè il Signore Dio non aveva fatto piovere sulla terra, e non c'era nessun uomo che coltivasse il suolo.
6 but a stream was welling up out of the earth and was watering all the surface of the ground--	6 Ma una fonte saliva dalla terra ed innaffiava tutta la superficie di essa.
7 the LORD God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so man became a living being.	7 E il Signore Dio formò l'uomo dal fango della terra e gli ispirò in faccia il soffio della vita e l'uomo divenne persona vivente.
8 Then the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and he placed there the man whom he had formed.	8 Ora il Signore Dio aveva piantato fin da principio un paradiso di delizie, dove pose l'uomo che aveva formato.
9 Out of the ground the LORD God made various trees grow that were delightful to look at and good for food, with the tree of life in the middle of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and bad.	9 E il Signore Dio fece spuntare dal suolo ogni sorta di alberi belli a vedersi, dai frutti soavi al gusto, e l'albero della vita, in mezzo al paradiso, e l'albero della scienza del bene e del male.
10 A river rises in Eden to water the garden; beyond there it divides and becomes four branches.	10 E da questo luogo di delizie usciva, ad irrigare il paradiso, un fiume che di là si divide in quattro capi.
11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it is the one that winds through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.	11 Il nome del primo è Fison, ed è quello che circonda tutto il paese d'Evilat, dove è l'oro,
12 The gold of that land is excellent; bdellium and lapis lazuli are also there.	12 l'oro di questo paese è il migliore, e vi si trova il bdellio e l'onice.
13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it is the one that winds all through the land of Cush.	13 Il nome del secondo fiume è Gehon, quello che circonda tutto il paese d'Etiopia.
14 The name of the third river is the Tigris; it is the one that flows east of Asshur. The fourth river is the Euphrates.	14 Il nome del terzo fiume è Tigri, che scorre per l'Assiria. E il quarto fiume è l'Eufrate.
15 The LORD God then took the man and settled him in the garden of Eden, to cultivate and care for it.	15 Il Signore Dio prese adunque l'uomo e lo pose nel paradiso di delizie, affinchè lo coltivasse e lo custodisse.
16 The LORD God gave man this order: "You are free to eat from any of the trees of the garden	16 E gli diè questo comandamento: «Mangia pure di ogni albero del paradiso,
17 except the tree of knowledge of good and bad. From that tree you shall not eat; the moment you eat from it you are surely doomed to die."	17 ma dell'albero della scienza del bene e del male non ne mangiare, perchè nel giorno in cui ne mangerai, tu morrai ».
18 The LORD God said: "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him."	18 Poi disse il Signore-Dio: « Non è bene che l'uomo sia solo: facciamogli un aiuto simile a lui ».
19 So the LORD God formed out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of the air, and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them; whatever the man called each of them would be its name.	19 Avendo dunque il Signore Dio formati dalla terra tutti gli animali dei campi e tutti gli uccelli del cielo, li menò ad Adamo, perchè vedesse il nome da darsi ad essi, e ogni nome che Adamo diede agli animali è il Vero nome.
20 The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of the air, and all the wild animals; but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man.	20 Or Adamo pose nomi appropriati a tutti gli animali, e a tutti i volatili dell'aria, e a tutte le bestie della terra, ma per Adamo non si trovava un aiuto che gli somigliasse.
21 So the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man, and while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.	21 Allora il Signore Dio mandò ad Adamo un profondo sonno, e, mentre era addormentato, gli tolse una costola che sostituì colla carne.
22 The LORD God then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from the man. When he brought her to the man,	22 E colla costola che aveva tolta ad Adamo, il Signore Dio formò la donna e la condusse ad Adamo.
23 the man said: "This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; This one shall be called 'woman,' for out of 'her man' this one has been taken."	23 E Adamo disse: «Ecco finalmente l'osso delle mie ossa, la carne della mia carne. Questa sarà chiamata « Virago », perchè è stata tratta dall'uomo.
24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one body.	24 Perciò l'uomo lascerà suo padre e sua madre e si unirà alla sua moglie e i due saranno una sola carne ».
25 The man and his wife were both naked, yet they felt no shame.	25 Or l'uno e l'altra, Adamo cioè e la sua moglie, eran nudi, e non ne avevan vergogna.
