1 Giobbe rispose, e disse:	1 And Job answered, and said:
2 Veramente io so, che così va la bisogna, e che l'uomo paragonato con Dio non ha più giustizia.	2 Indeed I know it is so, and that man cannot be justified compared with
3 Se ci vorrà venire a contesa con lui non potrà rendergli conto d'una cosa ogni mille.	3 If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one for a thousand.
4 Egli il saggio di mente, il forte in possanza; chi mai a lui contradisse, e potè aver pace?	4 He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath resisted him, and hath had peace ?
5 Egli trasporta le montagne, ed elle non se n' avveggono quand'ei nel suo furore le spiana.	5 Who hath removed mountains, and they whom he overthrew in his wrath, knew it not.
6 Egli dal suo sito scuote la terra, e le sue fondamenta sono sommosse.	6 Who shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.
7 Egli comanda al sole, e non nasce, e le stelle tiene egli chiuse come sotto sigillo.	7 Who commandeth tile sun and it riseth not: and shutteth up the stars as it were under a seal:
8 Egli solo distese i cicli, e cammina sui flutti del mare.	8 Who alone spreadeth out the heavens, and walketh upon the waves of the sea.
9 Egli creò e Arturo, e Orione, e le Hiadi, e le ascose parti del mezzodì.	9 Who maketh Arcturus, and Orion, and Hyades, and the inner parts of the south.
10 Egli fa cose grandi, e incomprensibili, e miracolose, che non possono numerarsi.	10 Who doth things great and incomprehensible, and wonderful, of which there is no number.
11 S'ei viene a me io noi veggo, e s'egli si parte io non me n'accorgo.	11 If he come to me, I shall not see him: if he depart I shall not understand.
12 Se egli repentinamente vuoi far disamina, chi rispondere a lui potrà? ovvero chi potrà dirgli: Perché fai cosi?	12 If he examine on a sudden, who shall answer him? or who can say: Why dost thou so?
13 Egli è Dio, e all'ira di lui nessun può resistere, e sotto di lui si incurvano quei, che reggono il mondo.	13 God, whose wrath no mall can resist, and under whom they stoop that bear up the world.
14 Son io qualche cosa di grande, che possa rispondere a lui, e stare a tu per tu con lui?	14 What am I then, that I should answer him, and have words with him?
15 Io che sebbene avessi qualche ragione non risponderò, ma implorerò la clemenza del mio Giudice.	15 I, who although I should have any just thing, would not answer, but would make supplication to my judge.
16 E quando esaudisse egli le mie suppliche, non crederò che egli abbia avuto riguardo alle mie voci.	16 And if he should hear me when I call, I should not believe that he had heard my voice.
17 Perocché egli mi ruoterà in un turbine, e moltiplicherà le mie piaghe anche senza cagione.	17 For he shall crush me in a whirlwind, and multiply my wounds even without cause.
18 Ei non lascia riposo alcuno al mio spirito, e mi inebria di amarezze.	18 He alloweth not my spirit to rest, and he filleth me with bitterness.
19 Se si ricorre alla possanza, egli è potentissimo, se all'equità nel giudicare, nissuno ardisce di rendere testimonianza in favor mio.	19 If strength be demanded, he is most strong: if equity of judgment, no man dare bear witness for me.
20 Se io vorrò giustificarmi, mi condannerà la mia propria bocca, se io mi dimostrerò innocente egli mi convincerà di reato.	20 If I would justify myself, my own mouth shall condemn me: if I would shew myself innocent, he shall prove me wicked.
21 Quand'anche io fossi perfetto, questo stesso sarà ignoto all'anima mia, e mi sarà noiosa la vita.	21 Although I should be simple, even this my soul shall be ignorant of, and I shall be weary of my life.
22 Questa sola cosa ho detto io: Egli consuma e l'innocente, e l'iniquo.	22 One thing there is that I have spoken, both the innocent and the wicked he consumeth.
23 Se egli flagella, uccida a un tratto, e non rida delle pene degli innocenti.	23 If he scourge, let him kill at once, and not laugh at the pains of the innocent.
24 La terra è data in balìa dell'empio, il quale mette una benda agli occhi de' giudici di essa. E se egli noi fa, chi è adunque, che lo faccia?	24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked, he covereth the face of the judges thereof: and if it be not he, who is it then?
25 I giorni miei sono stati più veloci di uom corridore; sono fuggiti, e nulla hanno veduto di bene.	25 My days have been swifter than a post: they have fled away and have not seen good.
26 Sono passati di fuga come nave carica di pomi, come aquila, che vola alla preda.	26 They have passed by as ships carrying fruits, as an eagle flying to the prey.
27 Allorché io dico: Non parlerò più così; si altera la mia faccia, e mi strazia il dolore.	27 If I say: I will not speak so: I change my face, and am tormented with sorrow.
28 Io temeva di tutte le mie azioni, sapendo, che non mi avresti perdonato se io peccava.	28 I feared all my works, knowing that thou didst not spare the offender.
29 Ma se anche cosi facendo io son empio, perché mi son io travagliato inutilmente?	29 But if so also I am wicked, why have I laboured in vain?
30 Quand' io fossi lavato con acqua di neve, e le mani mie luccicassero per mondezza,	30 If I be washed as it were with snow waters, and my hands shall shine ever so clean :
31 Nulladimeno mi immergerai nella lordura, e avranno di me orrore le stesse: mie vesti.	31 Yet thou shalt plunge me in filth, and my garments shall abhor me,
32 Perocché non avrò io a difendermi da un uomo simile a me, né da uno, che possa essere com'io convenuto in giudizio.	32 For I shall not answer a man that is like myself: nor one that may be heard with me equally in judgment.
33 Non v' ha chi possa entrar dì mezzo trall'uno, e l'altro ad essere arbitro tra noi due.	33 There is none that may be able to reprove both, and to put his hand between both.
34 Ritiri egli da me la sua verga, e non mi agghiadi co' suoi terrori.	34 Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me.
35 Parlerò, e nol temerò; perocché nel timore non poss'io dar risposta.	35 I will speak, and will not fear him: for I cannot answer while I am in fear.
