Luke 10

KING JAMES BIBLE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.	1 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them out ahead of him in pairs, to all thetowns and places he himself would be visiting.
2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.	2 And he said to them, 'The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest tosend labourers to do his harvesting.
3 Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.	3 Start off now, but look, I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.
4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.	4 Take no purse with you, no haversack, no sandals. Salute no one on the road.
5 And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house.	5 Whatever house you enter, let your first words be, "Peace to this house!"
6 And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.	6 And if a man of peace lives there, your peace will go and rest on him; if not, it will come back to you.
7 And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.	7 Stay in the same house, taking what food and drink they have to offer, for the labourer deserves hiswages; do not move from house to house.
8 And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you:	8 Whenever you go into a town where they make you welcome, eat what is put before you.
9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.	9 Cure those in it who are sick, and say, "The kingdom of God is very near to you."
10 But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say,	10 But whenever you enter a town and they do not make you welcome, go out into its streets and say,
11 Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.	11 "We wipe off the very dust of your town that clings to our feet, and leave it with you. Yet be sure ofthis: the kingdom of God is very near."
12 But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city.	12 I tel you, on the great Day it wil be more bearable for Sodom than for that town.
13 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.	13 'Alas for you, Chorazin! Alas for you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles done in you had been done inTyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
14 But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you.	14 And still, it wil be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the Judgement than for you.
15 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell.	15 And as for you, Capernaum, did you want to be raised high as heaven? You shal be flung down tohell.
16 He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me.	16 'Anyone who listens to you listens to me; anyone who rejects you rejects me, and those who rejectme reject the one who sent me.'
17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.	17 The seventy-two came back rejoicing. 'Lord,' they said, 'even the devils submit to us when we useyour name.'
18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.	18 He said to them, 'I watched Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.	19 Look, I have given you power to tread down serpents and scorpions and the whole strength of theenemy; nothing shal ever hurt you.
20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.	20 Yet do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you; rejoice instead that your names are written inheaven.'
21 In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.	21 Just at this time, fil ed with joy by the Holy Spirit, he said, 'I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and ofearth, for hiding these things from the learned and the clever and revealing them to little children. Yes, Father,for that is what it has pleased you to do.
22 All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.	22 Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except theFather, and who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.'
23 And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see:	23 Then turning to his disciples he spoke to them by themselves, 'Blessed are the eyes that see whatyou see,
24 For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.	24 for I tel you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see, and never saw it; to hearwhat you hear, and never heard it.'
25 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?	25 And now a lawyer stood up and, to test him, asked, 'Master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?'
26 He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?	26 He said to him, 'What is written in the Law? What is your reading of it?'
27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.	27 He replied, 'You must love the Lord your God with al your heart, with al your soul, with all yourstrength, and with al your mind, and your neighbour as yourself.'
28 And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.	28 Jesus said to him, 'You have answered right, do this and life is yours.'
29 But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?	29 But the man was anxious to justify himself and said to Jesus, 'And who is my neighbour?'
30 And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.	30 In answer Jesus said, 'A man was once on his way down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fel into thehands of bandits; they stripped him, beat him and then made off, leaving him half dead.
31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.	31 Now a priest happened to be travel ing down the same road, but when he saw the man, he passed byon the other side.
32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.	32 In the same way a Levite who came to the place saw him, and passed by on the other side.
33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,	33 But a Samaritan travel er who came on him was moved with compassion when he saw him.
34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.	34 He went up to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them. He then lifted him ontohis own mount and took him to an inn and looked after him.
35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.	35 Next day, he took out two denari and handed them to the innkeeper and said, "Look after him, andon my way back I wil make good any extra expense you have."
36 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?	36 Which of these three, do you think, proved himself a neighbour to the man who fel into the bandits'hands?'
37 And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.	37 He replied, 'The one who showed pity towards him.' Jesus said to him, 'Go, and do the sameyourself.'
38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.	38 In the course of their journey he came to a vil age, and a woman named Martha welcomed him intoher house.
39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.	39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord's feet and listened to him speaking.
40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.	40 Now Martha, who was distracted with all the serving, came to him and said, 'Lord, do you not carethat my sister is leaving me to do the serving al by myself? Please tel her to help me.'
41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:	41 But the Lord answered, 'Martha, Martha,' he said, 'you worry and fret about so many things,
42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.	42 and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part, and it is not to betaken from her.'
