Job 22

1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,	1 Allora Elifaz di Teman prese la parola e disse:
2 Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself?	2 "Può forse un uomo essere utile a Dio, mentre il saggio giova solo a se stesso?
3 Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him that thou makest thy ways perfect?	3 Che interesse ha l'Onnipotente, che tu abbia ragione? O che cosa ci guadagna, se la tua condotta è perfetta?
4 Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment?	4 E' forse a motivo della tua pietà che ti riprende e ti convoca in giudizio?
5 Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite?	5 Non è piuttosto per la tua grande malvagità e per le tue innumerevoli colpe?
6 For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.	6 Senza motivo infatti prendevi i pegni dei tuoi fratelli e strappavi le vesti agli ignudi.
7 Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.	7 Non davi da bere all'assetato e rifiutavi il pane all'affamato.
8 But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.	8 Ai prepotenti cedevi la terra, e vi si istallavano i tuoi favoriti.
9 Thou has sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.	9 Le vedove le rimandavi a mani vuote e spezzavi le braccia degli orfani.
10 Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;	10 Perciò ti circondano i lacci e sei turbato da un repentino spavento,
11 Or darkness, that thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee.	11 oppure un'oscurità non ti fa vedere, e una piena d'acqua ti sommerge.
12 Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are!	12 Non è forse Dio nell'alto dei cieli? Guarda il vertice delle stelle: come sono alte!
13 And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud?	13 E tu dici: "Che cosa ne sa Dio? Può forse giudicare dietro le nubi?
14 Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit of heaven.	14 Le nubi gli fanno velo e non vede, mentre cammina sulla volta dei cieli".
15 Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden?	15 Vuoi tu seguire la via antica già battuta da uomini perversi,
16 Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood:	16 che furono spazzati via prima del tempo, quando un fiume travolse le loro fondamenta?
17 Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them?	17 Dicevano a Dio: "Allontànati da noi! Che cosa ci può fare l'Onnipotente?".
18 Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.	18 Eppure egli aveva colmato di beni le loro case, ma essi lo escludevano dai loro piani perversi.
19 The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn.	19 I giusti vedono ciò e si rallegrano, l'innocente si beffa di loro:
20 Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumeth.	20 sì, certo, è stata annientata la loro fortuna, e il fuoco ne ha divorato gli avanzi!
21 Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.	21 Orsù, riconciliati con lui e fa' la pace; così riavrai la felicità.
22 Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.	22 Accetta dalla sua bocca l'istruzione e imprimiti nel cuore le sue parole.
23 If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.	23 Se ritorni all'Onnipotente, sarai ristabilito; allontana l'ingiustizia dalla tua dimora;
24 Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.	24 considera l'oro come polvere, e il metallo di Ofir come i sassi del torrente.
25 Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.	25 Allora sarà l'Onnipotente il tuo oro e argento brillante per te.
26 For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God.	26 Allora, sì, troverai delizia nell'Onnipotente e verso Dio leverai la faccia.
27 Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.	27 Quando lo supplicherai, egli ti esaudirà e adempirai i tuoi voti.
28 Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.	28 Se deciderai una cosa, ti riuscirà e la luce brillerà sul tuo cammino.
29 When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.	29 Poiché egli umilia l'alterigia del superbo e salva coloro che si umiliano.
30 He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of thine hands.	30 Egli libera l'innocente, e tu sarai liberato per la purezza delle tue mani".
