EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 El que ama a su hijo lo castiga asiduamente, para poder alegrarse de él en el futuro.	1 Whoever loves his son will beat him frequently so that in after years the son may be his comfort.
2 El que educa bien a su hijo encontrará satisfacción en él y se sentirá orgulloso entre sus conocidos.	2 Whoever is strict with his son wil reap the benefit, and be able to boast of him to his acquaintances.
3 El que instruye a su hijo dará envidia a su enemigo y se sentirá dichoso delante de sus amigos,	3 Whoever educates his son wil be the envy of his enemy, and wil be proud of him among his friends.
4 Muere el padre, y es como si no muriera, porque deja detrás de sí a uno igual a él.	4 Even when the father dies, he might wel not be dead, since he leaves his likeness behind him.
5 Mientras vive, se alegra de verlo, y a su muerte, no siente ningún pesar:	5 In life he has had the joy of his company, dying, he has no anxieties.
6 deja a alguien que lo vengará de sus enemigos y devolverá los favores a sus amigos.	6 He leaves an avenger against his enemies and a rewarder of favours for his friends.
7 El que mima a su hijo vendará sus heridas y a cada grito que dé, se le conmoverán las entrañas.	7 Whoever coddles his son will bandage his wounds, his heart wil turn over at every cry.
8 Un caballo sin domar se vuelve reacio, y un hijo consentido se vuelve insolente.	8 A badly broken-in horse turns out stubborn, a son left to himself turns out headstrong.
9 Malcría a tu hijo, y te hará temblar; juega con él, y te llenará de tristeza.	9 Pamper your child and he wil terrorise you, play along with him and he wil bring you sorrow.
10 No hagas bromas con él, para no sufrir con él ni rechinar tus dientes al final.	10 Do not laugh with him, or one day you wil weep with him and end up gnashing your teeth.
11 No les des rienda suelta en su juventud,	11 While he is young, do not al ow him his freedom and do not wink at his mistakes.
12 pégale sin temor mientras es niño, no sea que se vuelva rebelde y te desobedezca.	12 Bend his neck in youth, bruise his ribs while he is a child, or else he wil grow stubborn anddisobedient, and hurt you very deeply.
13 Educa a tu hijo y fórmalo bien, para que no tengas que soportar su desvergüenza.	13 Be strict with your son, and persevere with him, or you will rue his insolence.
14 Más vale pobre sano y vigoroso que rico lleno de achaques.	14 Better be poor if healthy and fit than rich if tormented in body.
15 La salud y el vigor valen más que todo el oro y el cuerpo robusto, más que una inmensa fortuna.	15 Health and strength are better than any gold, a robust body than untold wealth.
16 No hay mejor riqueza que la salud del cuerpo ni mayor felicidad que la alegría del corazón.	16 No riches can outweigh bodily health, no enjoyment surpass a cheerful heart.
17 Es preferible la muerte a una vida amarga y el descanso eterno a una enfermedad incurable.	17 Better death than a wretched life, and everlasting rest than chronic il ness.
18 Manjares derramados sobre una boca cerrada son los alimentos depositados sobre una tumba:	18 Good things lavished on a closed mouth are like food offerings put on a grave.
19 ¿de qué le sirve al ídolo la ofrenda si no puede comer ni gustar? Así pasa con el hombre perseguido por el Señor:	19 What use is an offering to an idol which can neither eat nor smel ? How describe someone pursued bythe Lord's displeasure?
20 mira con sus ojos y lanza un suspiro, como un eunuco cuando abraza a una virgen.	20 He looks and sighs like a eunuch embracing a pretty girl -- how he sighs!
21 No dejes que la tristeza se apodere de ti ni te atormentes con tus cavilaciones.	21 Do not abandon yourself to sorrow, do not torment yourself with brooding.
22 Un corazón alegre es la vida del hombre y el gozo alarga el número de sus días.	22 Gladness of heart is life to anyone, joy is what gives length of days.
23 Vive ilusionado y consuela tu corazón, y aparta lejos de ti la tristeza, porque la tristeza fue la perdición de muchos y no se saca de ella ningún provecho.	23 Give your cares the slip, console your heart, chase sorrow far away; for sorrow has been the ruin ofmany, and is no use to anybody.
24 La envidia y la ira acortan la vida y las preocupaciones hacen envejecer antes de tiempo.	24 Jealousy and anger shorten your days, and worry brings premature old age.
25 Un hombre de corazón alegre tiene buen apetito y lo que come le hace provecho.	25 A genial heart makes a good trencherman, someone who enjoys a good meal.
