Livro dos Provérbios 29

SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 O homem que, apesar das admoestações, se obstina será logo irremediavelmente arruinado.	1 Whoever is stiff-necked under reproof wil be suddenly and irremediably broken.
2 Quando dominam os justos, alegra-se o povo; quando governa o ímpio, o povo geme.	2 When the upright are on the increase, the people rejoice; when the wicked are in power, the peoplegroan.
3 Quem ama a sabedoria alegra seu pai; o que freqüenta as prostitutas dissipa sua fortuna.	3 The lover of Wisdom makes his father glad, but the patron of prostitutes fritters his wealth away.
4 É pela justiça que um rei firma seu país, mas aquele que o sobrecarrega com muitos impostos, o arruína.	4 A king gives a country stability by justice, an extortioner brings it to ruin.
5 O homem que adula seu próximo estende redes aos seus pés.	5 Whoever flatters his companion spreads a net for his feet.
6 No delito do ímpio há um ardil, mas o justo corre alegremente.	6 In the sin of the wicked lies a snare, but the upright exults and rejoices.
7 O justo conhece a causa dos pobres; o ímpio a ignora.	7 The upright understands the cause of the weak, the wicked has not the wit to understand it.
8 Os escarnecedores ateiam fogo na cidade, mas os sábios acalmam o furor.	8 Scoffers set a city in ferment, but the wise moderate anger.
9 Discute um sábio com um tolo? Que ele se zangue ou que ele se ria, não terá paz.	9 Let someone wise argue with a fool, anger and good humour alike wil be wasted.
10 Os homens sanguinários odeiam o íntegro, mas os homens retos tomam cuidado com sua vida.	10 The bloodthirsty hate the honest, but the upright seek them out.
11 O insensato desafoga toda sua ira, mas o sábio a domina e a recalca.	11 The fool blurts out every angry feeling, but the wise subdues and restrains them.
12 Quando um soberano presta atenção às mentiras, todos os seus servidores tornam-se maus.	12 When a ruler listens to false reports, al his ministers wil be scoundrels.
13 O pobre e o opressor se encontram: é o Senhor que ilumina os olhos de cada um.	13 Poor and oppressor are found together, Yahweh gives light to the eyes of both.
14 Um rei que julga com eqüidade os humildes terá seu trono firmado para sempre.	14 The king who judges the weak with equity sees his throne set firm for ever.
15 Vara e correção dão a sabedoria; menino abandonado à sua vontade se torna a vergonha da mãe.	15 The stick and the reprimand bestow wisdom, a young man left to himself brings shame on his mother.
16 Quando se multiplicam os ímpios, multiplica-se o crime, mas os justos contemplarão sua queda.	16 When the wicked are on the increase, sin multiplies, but the upright wil witness their downfal .
17 Corrige teu filho e ele te dará repouso e será as delícias de tua vida.	17 Correct your child, and he wil give you peace of mind; he will delight your soul.
18 Por falta de visão, o povo vive sem freios; ditoso o que observa a instrução!	18 Where there is no vision the people get out of hand; happy are they who keep the law.
19 Não é com palavras que se corrige um escravo, porque ele compreende, mas não se atém a elas.	19 Not by words is a slave corrected: even if he understands, he will take no notice.
20 Viste um homem precipitado no falar: há mais esperança num tolo do que nele.	20 You see someone too ready of speech? There is more to be hoped for from a fool!
21 Um escravo mimado desde sua juventude, acaba por se tornar desobediente.	21 If a slave is pampered from childhood, he wil prove ungrateful in the end.
22 Um homem irascível excita contendas; o colérico acumula as faltas.	22 The hot-head provokes disputes, someone in a rage commits al sorts of sins.
23 O orgulho de um homem leva-o à humilhação, mas o humilde de espírito obtém a glória.	23 Pride brings humiliation, whoever humbles himself will win honour.
24 Quem partilha com o ladrão, odeia-se a si mesmo; ouve a maldição e nada denuncia.	24 To hear the curse and disclose nothing is to share with the thief and to hate oneself.
25 O temor dos homens prepara um laço, mas quem confia no Senhor permanece seguro.	25 To be afraid of human beings is a snare, whoever trusts in Yahweh is secure.
26 Muitos buscam o favor dum príncipe, mas é do Senhor que cada homem alcança justiça	26 Many people seek a ruler's favour, but the rights of each come from Yahweh.
27 O homem iníquo é abominado pelos justos; o ímpio abomina aquele que anda pelo caminho certo.	27 Abhorrent to the upright is the sinful, abhorrent to the wicked is one whose way is straight.
