Job 41

CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
I will not rouse him, as the cruel would do, for who is able to withstand my countenance?1 Whoever might vainly hope to do so need only see him to be overthrown.
Who has given to me beforehand, so that I should repay him? All things that are under heaven are mine.2 Is he not relentless when aroused; who then dares stand before him?
I will not spare him, nor his powerful words and counterfeit attempts at supplication.3 Who has assailed him and come off safe-- Who under all the heavens?
Who can reveal the beauty of his garment? And who can enter the middle of his mouth?4 I need hardly mention his limbs, his strength, and the fitness of his armor.
Who can open the doors of his face? I gave fear to the circle of his teeth.5 Who can strip off his outer garment, or penetrate his double corselet?
His body is like shields fused together, like dense scales pressed over one another.6 Who can force open the doors of his mouth, close to his terrible teeth?
One is joined to another, and not even air can pass between them.7 Rows of scales are on his back, tightly sealed together;
They adhere to one another, and they hold themselves in place and will not be separated.8 They are fitted each so close to the next that no space intervenes;
His sneezing has the brilliance of fire, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.9 So joined one to another that they hold fast and cannot be parted.
Lamps proceed from his mouth, like torches of fire burning brightly.10 When he sneezes, light flashes forth; his eyes are like those of the dawn.
Smoke passes out of his nostrils, like a pot that is heated and boiling.11 Out of his mouth go forth firebrands; sparks of fire leap forth.
His breath causes coal to burn, and a flame comes forth from his mouth.12 From his nostrils issues steam, as from a seething pot or bowl.
Strength dwells in his neck, and destitution goes before his presence.13 His breath sets coals afire; a flame pours from his mouth.
The parts of his body work in harmony together. He will send lightning bolts against him, and they will not be carried to another place.14 Strength abides in his neck, and terror leaps before him.
His heart will be as hard as a stone and as dense as a blacksmith’s anvil.
When he will be raised up, the angels will be afraid, and, because they are terrified, they will purify themselves.16 His heart is hard as stone; his flesh, as the lower millstone.
When a sword catches up with him, it will not be able to settle in, nor a spear, nor a breastplate.17 When he rises up, the mighty are afraid; the waves of the sea fall back.
For he will consider iron as if it were chaff, and brass as if it were rotten wood.18 Should the sword reach him, it will not avail; nor will the spear, nor the dart, nor the javelin.
The archer will not cause him to flee; the stones of the sling have been turned into stubble for him.19 He regards iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood.
He will treat the hammer as if it were stubble, and he will ridicule those who brandish the spear.20 The arrow will not put him to flight; slingstones used against him are but straws.
The beams of the sun will be under him, and he will dispense gold to them as if it were clay.21 Clubs he esteems as splinters; he laughs at the crash of the spear.
He will make the depths of the sea boil like a pot, and he will set it to bubble just as ointments do.22 His belly is sharp as pottery fragments; he spreads like a threshing sledge upon the mire.
A path will shine after him; he will esteem the abyss as if it were weakening with age.23 He makes the depths boil like a pot; the sea he churns like perfume in a kettle.
There is no power on the earth that is being compared to him, who has been made so that he fears no one.24 Behind him he leaves a shining path; you would think the deep had the hoary head of age.
He sees every prominent thing; he is king over all the sons of arrogance.25 Upon the earth there is not his like, intrepid he was made.
