Matthäus 14

1 Zu dieser Zeit hörte der Tetrarch Herodes, was man von Jesus erzählte.	1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus;
2 Er sagte zu seinem Gefolge: Das ist Johannes der Täufer. Er ist von den Toten auferstanden; deshalb wirken solche Kräfte in ihm.	2 and he said to his servants, "This is John the Baptist, he has been raised from the dead; that is why these powers are at work in him."
3 Herodes hatte nämlich Johannes festnehmen und in Ketten ins Gefängnis werfen lassen. Schuld daran war Herodias, die Frau seines Bruders Philippus.	3 For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison, for the sake of Herodi-as, his brother Philip's wife;
4 Denn Johannes hatte zu Herodes gesagt: Du hattest nicht das Recht, sie zur Frau zu nehmen.	4 because John said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."
5 Der König wollte ihn deswegen töten lassen, fürchtete sich aber vor dem Volk; denn man hielt Johannes für einen Propheten.	5 And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet.
6 Als aber der Geburtstag des Herodes gefeiert wurde, tanzte die Tochter der Herodias vor den Gästen. Und sie gefiel Herodes so sehr,	6 But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodi-as danced before the company, and pleased Herod,
7 dass er schwor, ihr alles zu geben, was sie sich wünschte.	7 so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.
8 Da sagte sie auf Drängen ihrer Mutter: Lass mir auf einer Schale den Kopf des Täufers Johannes herbringen.	8 Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter."
9 Der König wurde traurig; aber weil er einen Schwur geleistet hatte - noch dazu vor allen Gästen -, befahl er, ihr den Kopf zu bringen.	9 And the king was sorry; but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given;
10 Und er ließ Johannes im Gefängnis enthaupten.	10 he sent and had John beheaded in the prison,
11 Man brachte den Kopf auf einer Schale und gab ihn dem Mädchen und sie brachte ihn ihrer Mutter.	11 and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.
12 Die Jünger des Johannes aber holten den Leichnam und begruben ihn. Dann gingen sie zu Jesus und berichteten ihm alles.	12 And his disciples came and took the body and buried it; and they went and told Jesus.
13 Als Jesus all das hörte, fuhr er mit dem Boot in eine einsame Gegend, um allein zu sein. Aber die Leute in den Städten hörten davon und gingen ihm zu Fuß nach.	13 Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a lonely place apart. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns.
14 Als er ausstieg und die vielen Menschen sah, hatte er Mitleid mit ihnen und heilte die Kranken, die bei ihnen waren.	14 As he went ashore he saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick.
15 Als es Abend wurde, kamen die Jünger zu ihm und sagten: Der Ort ist abgelegen und es ist schon spät geworden. Schick doch die Menschen weg, damit sie in die Dörfer gehen und sich etwas zu essen kaufen können.	15 When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves."
16 Jesus antwortete: Sie brauchen nicht wegzugehen. Gebt ihr ihnen zu essen!	16 Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat."
17 Sie sagten zu ihm: Wir haben nur fünf Brote und zwei Fische bei uns.	17 They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish."
18 Darauf antwortete er: Bringt sie her!	18 And he said, "Bring them here to me."
19 Dann ordnete er an, die Leute sollten sich ins Gras setzen. Und er nahm die fünf Brote und die zwei Fische, blickte zum Himmel auf, sprach den Lobpreis, brach die Brote und gab sie den Jüngern; die Jünger aber gaben sie den Leuten,	19 Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.
20 und alle aßen und wurden satt. Als die Jünger die übrig gebliebenen Brotstücke einsammelten, wurden zwölf Körbe voll.	20 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over.
21 Es waren etwa fünftausend Männer, die an dem Mahl teilnahmen, dazu noch Frauen und Kinder.	21 And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
22 Gleich darauf forderte er die Jünger auf, ins Boot zu steigen und an das andere Ufer vorauszufahren. Inzwischen wollte er die Leute nach Hause schicken.	22 Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.
23 Nachdem er sie weggeschickt hatte, stieg er auf einen Berg, um in der Einsamkeit zu beten. Spät am Abend war er immer noch allein auf dem Berg.	23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,
24 Das Boot aber war schon viele Stadien vom Land entfernt und wurde von den Wellen hin und her geworfen; denn sie hatten Gegenwind.	24 but the boat by this time was many furlongs distant from the land, beaten by the waves; for the wind was against them.
25 In der vierten Nachtwache kam Jesus zu ihnen; er ging auf dem See.	25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea.
26 Als ihn die Jünger über den See kommen sahen, erschraken sie, weil sie meinten, es sei ein Gespenst, und sie schrien vor Angst.	26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear.
27 Doch Jesus begann mit ihnen zu reden und sagte: Habt Vertrauen, ich bin es; fürchtet euch nicht!	27 But immediately he spoke to them, saying, "Take heart, it is I; have no fear."
28 Darauf erwiderte ihm Petrus: Herr, wenn du es bist, so befiehl, dass ich auf dem Wasser zu dir komme.	28 And Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water."
29 Jesus sagte: Komm! Da stieg Petrus aus dem Boot und ging über das Wasser auf Jesus zu.	29 He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus;
30 Als er aber sah, wie heftig der Wind war, bekam er Angst und begann unterzugehen. Er schrie: Herr, rette mich!	30 but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me."
31 Jesus streckte sofort die Hand aus, ergriff ihn und sagte zu ihm: Du Kleingläubiger, warum hast du gezweifelt?	31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "O man of little faith, why did you doubt?"
32 Und als sie ins Boot gestiegen waren, legte sich der Wind.	32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
33 Die Jünger im Boot aber fielen vor Jesus nieder und sagten: Wahrhaftig, du bist Gottes Sohn.	33 And those in the boat worshipped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."
34 Sie fuhren auf das Ufer zu und kamen nach Gennesaret.	34 And when they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret.
35 Als die Leute dort ihn erkannten, schickten sie Boten in die ganze Umgebung. Und man brachte alle Kranken zu ihm	35 And when the men of that place recognized him, they sent round to all that region and brought to him all that were sick,
36 und bat ihn, er möge sie wenigstens den Saum seines Gewandes berühren lassen. Und alle, die ihn berührten, wurden geheilt.	36 and besought him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment; and as many as touched it were made well.
