But the Lord, answering Job out of the whirlwind, said:1 Stil speaking to Job, Yahweh said:
Gird your waist like a man. I will question you, and you must answer me.2 Is Yahweh's opponent going to give way? Has God's critic thought up an answer?
Will you make my judgment null and void; and will you condemn me so that you may be justified?3 Job replied to Yahweh:
And do you have an arm like God, or a voice like thunder?4 My words have been frivolous: what can I reply? I had better lay my hand over my mouth.
Envelop yourself with splendor, and raise yourself up on high, and be glorious, and put on splendid garments.5 I have spoken once, I shal not speak again; I have spoken twice, I have nothing more to say.
Scatter the arrogant with your wrath, and, when you see all the arrogant, humble them.6 Yahweh gave Job his answer from the heart of the tempest. He said:
Look down upon each of the arrogant and confound them, and crush the impious in their place.7 Brace yourself like a fighter, I am going to ask the questions, and you are to inform me!
Hide them in the dust together and plunge their faces into the pit.8 Do you real y want to reverse my judgement, put me in the wrong and yourself in the right?
Then I will confess that your right hand is able to save you.9 Has your arm the strength of God's, can your voice thunder as loud?
Behold, the behemoth, whom I created along with you, eats hay like an ox.10 Come on, display your majesty and grandeur, robe yourself in splendour and glory.
His strength is in his lower back, and his power is in the center of his abdomen.11 Let the fury of your anger burst forth, humble the haughty at a glance!
He draws up his tail like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs have been drawn together.12 At a glance, bring down al the proud, strike down the wicked where they stand.
His bones are like pipes of brass; his cartilage is like plates of iron.13 Bury the lot of them in the ground, shut them, every one, in the Dungeon.
He is the beginning of the ways of God, who made him; he will use him as his sword.14 And I shal be the first to pay you homage, since your own right hand is strong enough to save you.
The mountains bring forth grass for him; all the beasts of the field will play there.15 But look at Behemoth, my creature, just as you are! He feeds on greenstuff like the ox,
He sleeps in the shadows, under the cover of branches, and in moist places.16 but what strength he has in his loins, what power in his stomach muscles!
The shadows cover his shadow; the willows of the brook will encircle him.17 His tail is as stiff as a cedar, the sinews of his thighs are tightly knit.
Behold, he will drink a river and not be amazed, and he has confidence that the Jordan could flow into his mouth.18 His bones are bronze tubes, his frame like forged iron.
He will seize him through his eyes, as if with a hook, and he will bore through his nostrils, as if with stakes.19 He is the first of the works of God. His Maker threatened him with the sword,
Can you draw out the leviathan with a hook, and can you bind his tongue with a cord?20 forbidding him the mountain regions and al the wild animals that play there.
Can you place a ring in his nose, or bore through his jaw with an arm band?21 Under the lotus he lies, he hides among the reeds in the swamps.
Will he offer many prayers to you, or speak to you quietly?22 The leaves of the lotus give him shade, the willows by the stream shelter him.
Will he form a covenant with you, and will you accept him as a servant forever?23 If the river overflows, he does not worry: Jordan might come up to his mouth, but he would not care.
Will you play with him as with a bird, or tether him for your handmaids?24 Who is going to catch him by the eyes or put poles through his nose?
Will your friends cut him into pieces, will dealers distribute him?25 Leviathan, too! Can you catch him with a fish-hook or hold his tongue down with a rope?
Will you fill up bags with his hide, and let his head be used as a home for fishes?26 Can you put a cane through his nostrils or pierce his jaw with a hook?
Place your hand upon him; remember the battle and speak no more.27 Will he plead lengthily with you, addressing you in diffident tones?
Behold, his hope will fail him, and in the sight of all, he will be thrown down.28 Will he strike a bargain with you to become your slave for life?
Will you make a pet of him, like a bird, keep him on a lead to amuse your little girls?
Is he to be sold by the fishing guild and then retailed by merchants?
Riddle his hide with darts? Or his head with fishing spears?
You have only to lay a finger on him never to forget the struggle or risk it again!
