But now, those younger in years scorn me, whose fathers I would not have seen fit to place with the dogs of my flock,1 - Adesso invece, si fan beffe di meminori di me in età, i cui padri io già non degnaid'ammettere fra i cani del mio gregge.
the strength of whose hands was nothing to me, and they were considered unworthy of life itself.2 La cui forza di braccia a me non serviva, a pur di vivere sembravano incapaci,
They were barren from poverty and hunger; they gnawed in solitude, layered with misfortune and misery.3 squallidi [com'erano] di penuria e di fame: essi, che brucavano lungo il deserto, consunti da calamità e miseria:
And they chewed grass and the bark from trees, and the root of junipers was their food.4 mangiavano erbe e cortecce d'alberi, ed era lor cibo la radice di ginepro.
They took these things from the steep valleys, and when they discovered one of these things, they rushed to the others with a cry.5 E andando in cerca di tali cose lungo le valli, quando ne avessero trovate, vi correvano sopra con schiamazzo.
They lived in the parched desert and in caves underground or above the rocks.6 Abitavano essi nei deserti dei torrenti, nelle grotte della terra e sulla ghiaia;
They rejoiced among these kinds of things, and they considered it delightful to be under thorns.7 e ivi dimorando erano lieti, stimando una delizia star fra le ortiche:
These are the sons of foolish and base men, not even paying any attention to the land.8 gente stolta ed ignobile, che nemmen comparisce sulla terra!
Now I become their song, and I have been made into their proverb.9 E adesso, son diventato la loro canzone, sono per essi una favola:
They loathe me, and so they flee far from me, and they are not reluctant to spit in my face.10 mi hanno aborrito, fuggono lungi da me, nè senton ritegno a sputacchiarmi in faccia!
For he has opened his quiver and has afflicted me, and he has placed a bridle in my mouth.11 Poichè aprì [Dio] la sua faretra, e m'ha bersagliato, e ha messo il morso alla mia bocca.
Immediately, upon rising, my calamities rise up to the right. They have overturned my feet and have pressed me down along their way like waves.12 A destra d'oriente insorsero a un tratto le mie calamità, travolsero i miei passi, e m'oppressero come flutti che s'avanzino;
They have diverted my journeys; they have waited to ambush me, and they have prevailed, and there was no one who might bring help.13 sconvolsero le mie strade, mi tesero insidie e prevalsero, nè vi fu chi desse aiuto;
They have rushed upon me, as when a wall is broken or a gate opened, and they have been pulled down into my miseries.14 come per muro spaccato e porta sforzataesse piombarono su me, e sulle mie miserie incrudelirono:
I have been reduced to nothing. You have taken away my desire like a wind, and my health has passed by like a cloud.15 sono ridotto a nulla; tu rapisti via come vento la mia aspirazione, e come nube trascorse via la mia salvezza.
But now my soul withers within myself, and the days of affliction take hold of me.16 E adesso, in me stesso si disfà l'anima mia, e m'hanno afferrato giorni di miseria.
At night, my bone is pierced with sorrows, and those who feed on me, do not sleep.17 Di notte l'ossa mie son trafitte da dolori, e questi miei divoratori non dormono;
By the sheer number of them my clothing is worn away, and they have closed in on me like the collar of my coat.18 la loro moltitudine consuma il mio manto, e come cappuccio di tunica mi costringono.
I have been treated like dirt, and I have been turned into embers and ashes.19 Sono diventato pari a fango, e simile a pula e a cenere.
I cry to you, and you do not heed me. I stand up, and you do not look back at me.20 Verso te, [o Dio], io grido, ma tu non mi ascolti, fermo mi tengo, ma tu non mi guardi;
You have changed me into hardness, and, with the hardness of your hand, you oppose me.21 sei diventato verso me crudele, e nella durezza del tuo pugno mi combatti;
You have lifted me up, and, placing me as if on the wind, you have thrown me down powerfully.22 mi lanciasti in alto, e come gittandomi al ventominutamente mi sfracellasti:
I know that you will hand me over to death, where a home has been established for all the living.23 lo so, a morte tu mi consegni, là ov'è fissata la casa per ogni vivente!
Truly, then, you do not extend your hand in order to consume them, and if they fall down, you will save them.24 Eppure, non per loro distruzione tu stendi la mano, e quando procombano, tu stesso li salverai.
Once, I wept over him who was afflicted, and my soul had compassion on the poor.25 Io piangevo in altri tempi su chi era afflitto, e l'anima mia aveva pietà per il povero.
I expected good things, but evil things have come to me. I stood ready for light, yet darkness burst forth.26 Aspettavo il bene, e m'è venuto il male, attendevo la luce, e sono spuntate le tenebre,
My insides have seethed, without any rest, for the days of affliction have prevented it.27 Le mie viscere bollono senza aver tregua, mi si fecero incontro giorni di miseria;
I went forth mourning, without anger, and rising up, I cried out in confusion.28 abbrunato m'aggiro, ma non dal sole, mi levo su, nell'adunanza io grido;
I was the brother of snakes, and the companion of ostriches.29 fratello son diventato agli sciacalli, e compagno agli struzzi:
My skin has become blackened over me, and my bones have dried up because of the heat.30 mi si è annerita in dosso la mia pelle, il mio scheletro è arrostito dal bruciore.
My harp has been turned into mourning, and my pipes have been turned into a voice of weeping.31 È diventata lutto la mia cetra, e la mia zampogna una voce di piangenti!
